Just the word 'UPSTAGE' is all I need to see.....
There is simply no back-paddling.

Exactly, that sets the whole tone.

If the OP wanted to discuss interactions with CM, and/or his Disney trivia knowledge, there were better ways to go about that. Seeing that he has been around since 2009 I get the impression he knew exactly what was going to happen when he posted what he did.

It's kind of like in the movie Trolls (which my daughter is currently watching or singing 24/7), Poppy knows that she will probably get into trouble trying to save Creek, but she does it anyway. she knew the likely outcome before she even tried.

My sister is a CM and I have absolutely no doubt that countless people know more Disney trivia than she does. Heck, even I do! She'd never been to WDW before starting work so her knowledge of any facts and trivia about the parks there is definitely limited.

There is no pop quiz on Disney trivia to be employed there. The CMs in no way purport to be experts in every aspect of the company.

I think she'd just walk away puzzled as to why it gave someone so much satisfaction to feel they'd 'upstaged' her. Either that or completely forget about you as just another annoying guest.

(to the bolded part) I just assumed they honestly were given some kind of "test" to make sure they had quite a bit of Disney knowledge. Not every aspect of course, but some trivia about the part they work in at least. At Universal, a nice lady working in the resort told us that in the HP sections, they are given a test on HP trivia to get the job there. Not about just about things in the park but about the books and movies. I don't know about the other sections but she said at the resorts they are expected to have knowledge about Universal as a whole and general knowledge about the movies represented in the parks. Even with my "vast" HP knowledge, I would have never quizzed a CM there though.

You should have been awarded a prize to commemorate the occasion. Perhaps the location could have been marked with a plaque.

I think maybe rather than waiting all this time to post a thread here a prime opportunity was missed to make a suggestion to Disney to create special pins, t-shirts, hats, awards for guests who can stump the CMs. Instead Disney remains clueless and unaware -- and what's worse guests might have to resort to bringing along their own gold stars.

Aren't there even game threads in other sections on this site where those with vast trivia knowledge can play along with others so inclined? What's ironic to me is I've seen lots of shade thrown on various Disney planning forums by "expert" planners, dogging new or less experienced Disney visitors for not doing their research before their trips since "it's so readily available if you only look".

Years ago we were at the Kidstop area in the Canadian pavilion. My child was busy doing the craft and we were chatting with the CM who was from our city. Others stopped by and asked the population of Canada. He was off by like 10 million so I corrected him. Then I felt bad. But come on how can you be in University and not know the population of your country! And he was representing us.
Maybe because it really isn't important? Or at least the CM didn't consider it important.

Could be that the CM had a major that didn't spend a lot of time on population numbers? I'm sure my son could give an estimate but he wouldn't be with 10 million. But ask a question about physics or advanced math, he's your guy.

Wow, OP, you sure got attacked! Not that I agree with what you did, (I don't) but seems like people are making it out to be far more than it was. I see people being so outright rude to CM's that this would just be an irritation to me, not deserve all the 'negatives' you've received.

Wouldn't be surprised if some of these posters might have actually been openly rude to a CM - have sure seen enough on the Dis complaining about 'rude, unfriendly' CM's to 'know' some people will complain about anything. Have seen parents jump on a CM because they're told their child wasn't tall enough to ride, etc.

Only on the Dis! Have to be 'very' careful about the threads you start - can get out of hand quickly!! :badpc:

Cannot for the life of me follow the logic here.

No, there is no "must pass Disney trivia" portion to the hiring system.

Whether there is or there isn't the OP shouldn't feel good about making someone feel bad.

I am a bit surprised though that there isn't something; not a quiz exactly but something. I remember the first time I went to Disney as an adult and the bus driver was just full of Disney trivia (and I believe he was right on most of it, wouldn't have said anything if he wasn't). With that, and what we were told at Universal, I just assumed that they are expected to know a certain amount. Oh well, doesn't really matter a hill of beans, just find it curious.

There is no requirement but they do try to impart some knowledge during traditions and also if you work in a park some park specific stuff during your getting to know your park training day. There isn't a test though and you only have to look like you are paying attention during Traditions.

How can you all be so brutal to me? It was an enjoyable experience, and there was even a little magic spread around that day. Frankly, I'm getting tired of so many negative responses to posts I make. All I'm doing is trying to make conversation with recollections about past trips. I don't need this type of aggravation.

Dan, maybe you should step back a moment and reread what you originally posted. Maybe you didn't intend to sound like a braggart know-it-all, but maybe that's how many people took it. And in that case, they may feel a bit compelled to try and knock you down a bit in their responses.

Yikes, LB, I initially just read your reply and not the quoted post. I was thinking, 'what did I say, where?'

I thought it was odd. I've always known a ballpark population for Canada. And yes 10 million doesn't seem much to an American. It's a 1/3 of our population. I assumed that the CMs in the countries would be able to answer some basic questions about their country. Guess I was wrong.

Wow, that's a lot of assumption on your part. I doubt she felt bad. She probably clocked out, went home, and told her roommate all about the crazy day she had at work. I don't understand why you would purposely barrage the poor CM, trying to one-up her with "disney trivia". I'm sure she had actual work to do, but was being nice and humoring you.

That's if the CM even remembered the OP at all. CMs deal with dozens of dilwads every shift, and that interaction was likely one of the least memorable ones of the day.

It is the tone of the post.

I can tell you as an ex-CM that type of thing is the thing that gets laughed about backstage and doesn't affect your actual day. Now if the guest is being rude in their "knowledge" (there are some who does this not saying the OP was that way at all) they may be a little defeated. I wouldn't want someone coming into my job now and trying to upstage me and I hated it a lot as a CM too especially the grown adults that expected me to know every single episode of Phineus and Ferb because I worked at the attraction or would debate the way Perry's call music should be said.

Isn't "have a magical day" the standard response for dealing with annoying guests like that?

Just the word 'UPSTAGE' is all I need to see.....
There is simply no back-paddling.

Yep, upstaging is generally considered to be a hostile act. Now granted there could be instances where the upstaging is accidental, but it seems OP made it a point to intentionally show his superiority. Then come here to brag about it.
