Before I get started on our 2nd Flower and Garden trip from last month, I'll do a quick recap of our March trip. First, while it was our 2nd stay at WL it was our first experience with Geyser Point since it had recently opened. It's such a fantastic addition to my favorite resort! Before it opened I read concerns from people that being outside it would be too hot/cold to sit/eat there, and also concern that the menu choices weren't "normal" enough. I don't think the menu choices will be an issue for anyone once Roaring Fork reopens. While it wasn't hot either the morning we walked down there or the night we sat out there, they do have huge ceiling fans so I'm sure they'll do their best to keep it cool. And they did have the heaters on in the morning which took the slight chill in the air out for those sitting and eating inside. The view, both during the day and at night, is incredible; I can't say enough about the place and I haven't even tried any of the food! Don't forget you now have more adult beverage choices at the resort, which is never a bad thing.
Flower and Garden was the main reason for this trip - well, that and the fact that even though we had our May trip booked already when we booked March, Steve couldn't handle the thought of a 6 month WDW break! F&G remains one of my favorite times to visit, I think second only to fall during MNSSHP. Here's our favorites and not so favorites from the festival booths:
Steve's favorite: if you don't know this you obviously haven't read my report: the Sugar Cane Shrimp Skewer from La Isla Fresca that he had about 10x. Runners up would be the meatball parm and antipasto from Primavera Kitchen in Italy which is kind of surprising since you don't hear much about this.
Steve's least favorite: the Beef Tenderloin Tips from Northern Bloom didn't do anything for him but, sorry to say, the burnt ends hash was his least favorite. At least my many Canadian friends will still love us!
Ariane's favorite: This is tough so I need to go by category: adult beverage, obviously the La Vie en Rose from the Fleur de Lys in France. For a sweet item it would definitely be the heavenly Macaron Chocolat Framboise also from France, and for savory......a French trifecta with the Tarte a l'Onion Alsacienne!
Ariane's least favorite: Similar to Steve I really did not enjoy the burnt ends hash or the chocolate cake with bourbon caramel sauce from The Smokehouse.
If we're talking restaurants we did truly enjoy all our meals: Liberty Tree Tavern, The Wave, Tiffins and Territory Lounge even though I missed out on my soup. Tiffins takes top prize for both of us though, it's a wonderful addition to Disney's signatures and to AK as well. Overall it was another great adults only trip! What made it even better was knowing we were returning in less than 2 months, so on to our May trip
FLOWER AND GARDEN TRIP TAKE TWO: MAY 18-22ND
ANIMAL KINGDOM VILLAS, KIDANI
Unlike our March trip when we arrived early in the morning, we didn't arrive until about 5pm this time. We got right on a bus and only sat for about 15 minutes before heading to AKV, where we were staying and which was our first stop. I never take DME selfies - I rarely take selfies since I suck at them - but I changed it up this time. However Steve wasn't in the mood and I'm not sure what he's looking at? Oh well, my best attempt. You'll notice my freaky eyes which are a staple in my selfie attempts:
We'd also never stayed at AKV before just AKL. I took lots of pictures of our room, which was nice and on the 4th floor, but didn't have any type of animal view. We did have a nice view of the bus stop:
I suppose we could have technically jumped over our balcony whenever we wanted to catch a bus. We did not do that.
We got to the resort around 6:15 but because you never know with DME, we hadn't made any plans to go to a park. Instead we had plans to go to dinner at Boma and had a 7:40 reservation. With time to kill we walked around the resort a bit and checked out the very small gift shop with grab and go items. One item in particular caught my eye:
Hello individual cup of Moscato
Why are you the only kind of wine not in my airport at home?
It was a tad warm outside but not bad so we chose to walk over to Jambo rather than take the shuttle that runs between there and Kidani. The walk left us parched though and we still had about 30 minutes before our reservation, so we stopped off in Victoria Falls Lounge for a drink.
Victoria Falls is neat because it overlooks Boma. It's also nice and dark and just has a cool "feel" to it. We both ordered a drink off their menu; Steve got the Moscow Mule:
Russian Standard Vodka, fresh Lime Juice, and Agave Nectar topped with Ginger Beer. He'd never had one before and he loved it. I got the Smoked Turkey:
Wild Turkey 101 Bourbon, Red Stag Black Cherry Bourbon, Grenadine, and Odwalla Lemonade with a hint of Hickory Smoke garnished with Luxardo Gourmet Maraschino Cherries
The cherries were pretty bitter but that's the only thing I didn't like about this drink. I could taste the "hint of hickory smoke" too
Steve had gone down to check in at Boma right after we got our drinks and was told they were running about 30 minutes behind but got a pager; the pager went off at 7:50 so not bad at all. We took our drinks down to our table with us.
The restaurant was packed! We'd only eaten dinner at Boma once before, back in 2011 with the boys. Neither of us remembered it that well but I was looking forward to this.
Our first plates were bowls; Steve tried the Seafood Gumbo. I can't find a detailed description of this anywhere and Steve isn't home at the moment, but I can tell you it had shrimp in it:
And thought this was great.
I tried something I'd never had before since it didn't have any seafood in it (remember I don't do seafood); the Mulligatawny:
Indian flavored Apple, Rice, and Chicken soup
OMG this was heavenly! My first time having Mulligatawny and I ended up having two bowls and have had dreams about it since leaving, which I know makes me weird. Would it make it any less weird if in those dreams Johnny Depp was serving it to me naked?
The broth is just a bit spicy and there's quite a strong curry taste. I can do a little curry so it kind of surprised me I liked this so much. Usually I find chicken in things like this tough but the chicken was extremely tender. I could have just eaten this and been satisfied, Johnny Depp or no. Oh and for any of you youngsters who only think of Pirates when you think of Johnny, check out the original Nightmare on Elm Street, What's Eating Gilbert Grape and 21 Jump Street, the series NOT THE MOVIE!!
Steve's first plate:
mashed potatoes, green beans, Nut-Encrusted Salmon, Durban-style Roasted Chicken
I'm pretty sure he feels these mashed potatoes are the best he's ever had on property. He also loved the salmon and needed to run up and check what exactly was on it because it was so good and he hadn't looked at the sign when taking it, he just loves salmon so figured he'd like it. Other than "Nut-Encrusted" it didn't give a description but he didn't care. He also loved the Durban Chicken and even the beans which had some type of lightly spiced flavor to them.
My first plate:
mashed potatoes, African-Spiced Strip-Loin with a Chipotle &Teriyaki mustard, Coconut Basmati Rice
I agreed with Steve on the mashed potatoes and the meat was delicious, especially with the mustard on it. I wasn't a fan of the coconut rice but I didn't think I would be since I knew it would be sweet; I like rice and I love coconut but sweet rice doesn't work for me.
My next plate which was after my 2nd bowl of Mulligatawny:
more Strip-Loin with horseradish on the side, corn muffins that were called something a little different, and a salad that I swore was the Apple Jicama Salad but the picture seems to be missing apple so, your guess is as good as mine!
You can see this piece of meat is seriously on the rare side, too rare for me but I believe right up
@kastoney's alley. I did eat a couple bites to try the horseradish which I love and it was delicious but I preferred my first cut of meat. The salad was very good, the dressing was like a spicier Thousand Island, nothing outstanding but I wanted a little salad. The corn muffins were little bites of goodness as is most Disney corn bread.
Steve's second plate:
the Strip-Loin with a mustard gravy, more mashed potatoes and Durban chicken, a Plantain with what my notes say is "Pedro", and some Pap
Of the new stuff Steve wasn't a big fan of the Plantain but whatever Pedro actually is, he thought was tasty. It was a jelly-like substance but not as thick and on the sweet side. He also didn't care for the Pap, not that it was bad, he'd simply never had it before and was interested in trying it but it wasn't his thing.
He also got a plate of bread because what's a dinner without bread?
A dinner roll, pita chips, and 2 types of Hummus, White Bean and Sun-Dried Tomato
I was surprisingly too full to try any bread but Steve ate all the hummus. He preferred the sun-dried tomato but liked the white bean also, except he felt it was a little flat whatever that means. I think all hummus is yucky.
At some point during dinner Steve ordered another Moscow Mule and I opted for something different: a
Watermelon Margarita
So pretty right? It was good and had nice watermelon flavor; a little on the sweet side and for me to say that considering what drinks I like, it was sweet. Still no trouble finishing it though! After a short break we moved on to desserts.
Steve's plate:
starting with the Zebra Dome and going clockwise, you have an Oreo Cheesecake Tart, Kenyan Coffee Tart, Cape Dutch Malva Pudding and a Guava Panna Cotta
Mine:
the Oreo Cheesecake Tart, a Chocolate Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce, and a good old-fashioned Brownie
They also had your standard Disney cookies on the dessert buffet and plenty of them.
We both liked the Oreo cheesecake and I loved my brownie. I keep attempting to like bread pudding but I just can't become a fan, even of the 'Ohana one. It's too mushy and doesn't have enough taste for me; Steve tried mine and didn't care for it either but keep in mind it's coming from a pair of non bread pudding fans.
On to Steve's choices: he doesn't remember trying the Zebra Dome last time we were there and I can't remember if he did or not, but he liked it now. I tried it again and much like bread pudding - and Dole Whips - I'm not a fan. He loved the Kenyan coffee tart which he said had a strong coffee flavor but didn't care for the Guava Panna Cotta which was a Panna Cotta texture thing for him. Now, that Dutch Malva pudding? He was in heaven with that! It's soaked in some type of alcohol and was bouncy-moist, a word I just made up so do what you can to picture it. He ate 4 of those. I have absolutely no idea what Malva pudding is so I looked it up and it's a South African baked dessert that looks like a cake (duh) and has lots of vanilla in it. It doesn't say anything about alcohol but Steve was totally certain it was soaked in some so maybe Disney just ramps theirs up to get people to return? Not that they need to, we enjoyed our dinner immensely and will definitely go back.
We chose to walk back over to Kidani again since it was so nice out, it's honestly not a bad walk at all. Going back and forth is when we realized how much we prefer Jambo over Kidani. Not that there's anything wrong with Kidani at all, but Jambo just has a more bustling feel and we like that; similar to how we felt in BCV as opposed to staying in the main building, not that the DVC building is far from the main one. With our first (awesome) meal of the trip in the books we unpacked and called it a night. We had to be somewhere pretty early the next morning!
