Any NFL fans not watching this year due to the protests?

Love this quote from "The American President." Kneeling can be substituted for the burning of the flag. Kind of sums up how I feel. This is what our brave soldiers fight for.

America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You've gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say, "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours." You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country cannot just be a flag. The symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Now show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms.

Then you can stand up and sing about the land of the free.

Fantastic move and a powerful quote!

Im a diehard NY Giants fan and watch everything from draft to training camp etc.

Used to constantly have on the NFL network listening to whats going on in the league. Not to mention multiple fantasy football leagues.

After all the kneeling down during the National Anthem I have lost my interest in the game.

Total Disrespect to veterans who have served in the military.

Count me as one who has turned off the NFL this year.

Always thought teams like Pittsburgh and NY Giants were above this nonsense. Once those two franchises allowed their players to disrespect the anthem that was it for me.

People want to protest thats fine. People want to protest during our NATIONAL ANTHEM that is not.

Just an opinion. Rant over.

I'm sure its got nothing to do with how your Giants are playing right now.

Hate to bring the truth here, but there is NO police brutality against black males.

Lifelong Giants fan here also stopped watching - for a number of reasons but these flag protests were just the last straw. Also does not help that the Giants are really stinking up the joint this season.

I just find so much of the protests so misguided:

1. Yes it is disrespectful. The players can say "well, it's about this, not about that" all day long. In this day and age, we are always being told we have to be mindful of how things are perceived, whether or not that was the intent. Some people say a statue of a Confederate general is a way to commemorate a historical figure, while some people say it glorifies this nation's past history of slavery. So why are we not allowed to perceive that staging a protest during something that represents our country is a sign of disrespect to our nation and its people?
2. The NFL has very specific rules about what players must do during the National Anthem. Either the NFL has rules and enforces them or it doesn't. The First Amendment protects us from the government restricting our speech but the NFL is a private entity and employers impose rules on what their employees can do and say all the time.
3. The NFL does not realize that so many of their fans watch the game for pure escapism. For a couple of lousy hours in a week can we please get politics out of our faces?
4. The irony of millionaires who get to play a game for a living complaining about inequality. I can buy groceries for my family for a month for what it would cost for my husband and me to go to a game. Forget bringing the kids.

FWIW - yes I do get up or stop what I am doing when the anthem is played. Typically this is not part of the broadcast I would see at home, but if it comes on I do get up. If I am walking around at a venue while the anthem is played I will stop until it is completed.

I used to LOVE watching football. Back in the day I would watch all day on Sunday, MNF and sometimes even college football on Saturdays. I envied people who lived on the West Coast because that meant they could start watching at 10:00 am. Of course, as life got in the way I found myself just not having the time to watch as much anymore...then the few precious minutes I had to actually watch a game, I noticed the coverage was just awful. It was turning into ten minutes of commercials for ED medications, trucks, tires and beer interrupted by about 8 seconds of actual playing time. Every time there was a possession change or a clock stoppage, it seemed we would get another ten minutes of commercials. It just got very frustrating.

I'm 13+ years into what I hope will be a 20+ year military career.

I don't mind the kneeling at all. I'm in the military so people have the right to kneel, or stand, or sing, or remain quiet, or whatever they want to do.

I'm not watching nearly as much football this year as I'm used to, but that's because my favorite team seems to NEVER be one of the teams playing on the major networks in my current duty location, and I don't watch enough to justify paying extra for the full schedule. But I usually turn it on for at least a little while each Sunday.

This is my favorite scene of my all-time favorite movie :thumbsup2

Maybe I missed it but I have yet to hear from those think the football players are out of line what they think the football players should do?

I think it's pretty obvious what they want. Everyone on the field (especially the players) remove any headwear, stand at attention towards an American flag, and then wait until the anthem is over. That's generally what I do. Once I remember being in line at a baseball game and I asked why the vendor wasn't removing his hat, and he said he was required to keep it on due to health codes.

The strange thing about Colin Kapernick is that there really wasn't much about his "protest" when he started. He simply took a seat on the bench and waited until it was over. Most of the time nobody watching on TV even notices because the national anthem is rarely broadcast except for some high-profile games like the Super Bowl. He never really publicized what he was doing and it didn't become a thing until a reporter asked why he was sitting down. Heck - there are other NFL players who sit down during the anthem and nobody really questions if it's a protest or if it's just the way they handle it.

I think they should protest on their own time and their own dime, not while working.
I don't care what they do out on the streets to make a difference.

I don't think they are out of line, I just think how they chose to protest is disrespectful.

Thanks. I'm using this.

It is my understanding that this is not true. There was a post being circulated on FB that purported to quote an NFL rulebook rule that required specific behavior during the anthem but it was debunked as being false. I also downloaded the NFL rulebook when I saw that and read through for ANY rule pertaining to the anthem. There is none.

With all the people here watching more, I'm sure those ratings will be way up very soon.

And they should realize that their additional viewing only helps the owners. The same owners who refuse to hire Kaepernick.
