Lasseter Taking Sabbatical over "Missteps"

1. "“He’s very tactile in a weird way,” said one former female executive who, like others, spoke with Deadline on condition that she not be named in the story for fear of reprisals. “He would rub my leg in a meeting … It was creepy and weird. It got to the point where I wouldn’t sit next to him in a meeting, because it undermined everything I said.”

2. "Lasseter was observed passionately kissing a female subordinate at a 2010 Miramax party, according to an executive who witnessed the amorous display and another source who corroborated the account. The incident at the Oscar night celebration, attended by celebrities and Pixar and Disney executives, prompted high-level discussions about Lasseter’s conduct."

3. "Two sources recounted Lasseter’s obsession with the young character actresses portraying Disney’s Fairies, a product line built around the character of Tinker Bell.

At the animator’s insistence, Disney flew the women to a New York event. One Pixar employee became the designated escort as Lasseter took the young women out drinking one night, and to a party the following evening.

“He was inappropriate with the fairies,” said the former Pixar executive, referring to physical contact that included long hugs. “We had to have someone make sure he wasn’t alone with them.”

4. "One female executive with Disney’s consumer products group found herself the focus of Lasseter’s attentions, say sources who observed their interactions.

During one trip to New York City for the annual Toy Fair, Lasseter and a group of executives met in the lobby of Trump International Hotel and decided to go out for a “nightcap.” As the group walked out onto Columbus Circle, one person saw Lasseter pull the female executive tightly to him and move his hands over her body.

The female executive later sought to laugh off the encounter, saying she didn’t think her job description included “being groped by John Lasseter,” the observer said. “But you could tell she was pissed.”

The woman subsequently left Disney and did not respond to emails and calls seeking comment."

But let's keep giving Disney and Pixar more money by buying those Car 3 DVDs and Coco tickets...Let's keep giving corporate the benefit of the doubt...I'm sure that will convince Disney to take a hard line and sack their rainmaker...seems like they spent years protecting him to protect their assets and are as much a part of this conspiracy of awfulness as he is...

Everyone can do what they want with their money. It’s their money. I went to Coco yesterday and stand by that.

I have faith if he truly did something wrong Disney will terminate him.

That’s my hope as well. And if it comes out they did cover it up I truthfully don’t know what I’ll do.

Really? Even if it comes out they did cover it up? Wow. I know exactly what I would do. It's a no-brainer. They don't get any of my money until they clean house of all who knew and supported the behavior. I would want to hear them bragging about their corporate changes in the media. But, I'm not as big a pixie duster as many on this forum, so it would be relatively easy for me to give Disney a pass while they hopefully do the right thing. It would be much harder for others. Most will do nothing. There are many ways to justify inaction.

I'm betting we'll never really know who knew what. The sabbatical is for damage control. They will continue to ride it out. If pressure builds, they may eventually cut Lasseter loose, try to reclaim the high ground, and keep senior leadership (and Iger's political aspirations) intact.

That Deadline story made me throw up in my mouth.
I've got some real decisions to make in the next couple of days, but I forsee a large cancellation of my January trip upcoming.

I’m not going to lie I do go a little “uncensored” below, so discretion advised, but the only reason why I did is because of the context of the situation. Feel free to delete this post if need be, I just wanted to say that was the reason I went a little more graphic her:

Before that I was giving him the “tame” treatment. I’ve read through most of the allegations to come out since Weinstein, even wrote a paper on it for school. Before that deadline article, Lasseter’s allegations were extremely tame especially compared to Louis C.K., Kevin Spacey, Weinstein, and I guess now Matt Lauer. Part of me thinks before today’s article came out the people who called it disgusting only did so because they didn’t see all the aforementioned names because it really didn’t apply to them. Gary Goddard of Universal got hit pretty bad with a child rape accusation, but that didn’t make the headlines this did. I was afraid to comment on this, or any thread here because 1. I just came back from Disney and I kind of didn’t want to come back here immediately considering I was just at the place this forum fantasices about and 2. With the little info that I had, I defended Lasseter and seeing the comments here I knew I would be bombarded with comments calling me a denier or a rape enabler or another. It just seemed to me that Lasseter had a very European way of greeting people and after stories of actresses being forced to listen to a guy over the phone chocking a chicken this seemed really tame for me, hence why I defended. If you were to ask me then, was it wrong? Oh hell yeah it was, but it seemed like firing him for that was too extreme. Now I guess I’m waiting for Disney’s response and more proof to this pudding.

I’m still going to support Pixar though, why? After Iger bought Pixar do you know how little Lasseter’s involvement truly has been because he’s been stretched so many ways? His literal contributions have been sitting in on meetings saying “yay” or “nay” to things. Kind of silly to boycott when all he really did was give a seal of approval

Well it’s not as easy as saying I won’t ever buy anything from Disney again. That’s where i vacation, my parents have DVC and I’m fortunate enough to be able to go with them to WDW every year.

That being said, I guess I just wouldn’t buy anything while I’m there but again I don’t know exactly what I’d do. This is all a hypothetical anyways as we have no idea what if anything has been covered up

I completely understand wanting to boycott or not give Disney your money but Disney gets your money in many ways. Look at your cable bill for example. They are getting money from that. Netflix too.

I’ve got to imagine with everything going on in the Hollywood sphere that Disney is not going to sit on its butt and just let Lasseter return no questions asked in now less than six months.

I just don't see how he can come back - with as much as has come out (even if anonymous can't imagine none of it is true - and as stated he wouldn't take a sabbatical for just "hugging") and what is going on in the industry in general for similar situations. Probably just a question now if he goes quietly into the night or if it is a more formal firing - which probably depends what an investigation uncovers and also what other executives knew and if a bit then probably want it to just go away rather than raising more questions

Seriously, and people keep saying that they're afraid that we won't be allowed to hug one another anymore...really?? That's what you're concerned about? That's what you're taking away from this?

Enough time has passed...I need Disney to say something. NBC sent a message canning Matt Lauer (unfortunate that it took as long as it did since what he did was such an open secret for so long - and yes I realize that Lasseter's alleged transgressions and Lauer's alleged transgressions are not the same) that this sort of behavior is not acceptable, no matter how visible or powerful you are in a company. People are fond of pointing out that "Disney is a business" - yes they are, and they need to hold their most powerful and their most visible to the same standards that other businesses do, and I think it would send a similarly powerful message if they did.

I mean I just reserved 80 dollars worth of tickets for Star Wars last night. Am I supposed to burn them now? Unfortunately Disney (it feels like) runs the world, and they’re gonna get your money somehow

Exactly. I really do hope we find out something soon in terms of what Disney is doing.

If Disney execs covered it up I hope they suffer consequences as well. If is still the question here.
This is all supposition at this point, until some sort of disclosure is made.

for what this is worth(and in cases like this I don't really buy into this person due to the hate toward WD managment) Spirit over at WDWMagic.com was infering Iger and co. knew of all this and covered it up with money and such. To the point he inferred that Chapek may have leaked his being the next in line due to "blood in the water" over what may happen with Iger and co. depending on who this all falls out.

The goal is to protect Iger's legacy, but if this goes totally viral and out, I don't see how his legacy will survive. Hiding this, especially if money and such were used to cover up will be the only story about Iger to be remembered.

Spirit isn’t the only one to claim there has been cover ups. I believe Lasseter has done wrong but it’s hard to know how much of what’s been said is true.

Well sure. You can apply the same logic to food/consumer electronics and a whole host of other industries where companies are both competitors, and customers of each other.

Still, what's the average split between active Disney spend vs passive? 'cos that's what Disney stands to take a hit on. Also, they're a company that a lot of people are already somewhat conflicted on for one reason or another. Some dislike their influence in the US's (insane) copyright laws, others have issues with the princess culture, etc. If it turns out that Disney were using pressure or bribes to cover misbehavior by Lasseter, in this environment, that's going to stay with them. There'll be a bunch more people who become stridently anti-Disney, and over time that becomes a problem.

Yeah, no formal investigation yet..."Disney declined to answer inquiries by Variety as to whether the company was paying for Lasseter’s leave of absence and whether the entertainment giant intended to launch a formal investigation into the accusations."
Yeah Disney hasn't said anything to anyone which is part of the problem. They need say they are at least investigating or something.

While it may not seem like a major chuck of an individual cable bill that adds up and makes for a lot of Disney's money. I truly hope Disney does something about this.

Personally I am not just going to quit everything Disney though.
