Is this person on FB in charge of Fish Extender?

One of the things I really appreciate about DIS is that lack of heavy handiness in this forum. Posters routinely reference other boards and moderators never threaten them or kick them out. Disney Cruising has more of a presence of moderators but I think it's because there are a lot of new people in that group and they often ask the same newbie questions and sometimes people can get snippy when giving advice so moderators sometimes have to step in. Also many newer people to social media tend to use FB where as veterans of social media are often ok and knowledgeable of this forum type and the newer FB people sometimes are not always familiar with social media etiquette and I think that's why moderators tend to have to step in more on FB groups. But the notion of DIS stealing members LOL.... I have seen so many FB DCL spin off groups created that the idea is just funny, I am going to assume that was an older statement that is still in the about section.

I think the originator should get proper credit because it has sky rocketed into a huge deal. She deserves recognition. I am busy looking for an article that was posted years ago that was an in depth article about the FE and it's inception.
I believe it started on some cruise group that sailed the panama years ago.

Although I don’t do FE, if I did I would want it to be here through a cruise group. Not FB. I wish people would bring it back here. All it takes is for people to start doing it again.

I joined a FB cruise specific group recently under my husband's profile and was asked a few questions which was fine as I understood they only want people who are sailing that date to join. I just basically wanted info on San Juan hotels and how the island was doing post hurricane.

I find that that sort of question is terrifically answered over on the cruisecritic.com forums. Their ports of call forum is excellent.

Yes, I agree. I've gotten excellent advice from people on those forums. The tripadvisor forums are also excellent. I find I typically get answers from people who actually live in the area where I'm traveling and have gotten extraordinarily good advice.

I've never done FE and after reading through this thread, I never will! Those FB pages sound like a nightmare.

I hate fb. Something creepy about it.

Edit: lol. Just read through some of this thread and was pleased to see others also used the word "creepy" to describe FB.
I think it's funny there is so much FB bashing on here. I like the DIS, but they have been restrictive at times too. FB is bad only if you get into the wrong group. You pick your friends and the groups you are in. Don't like one, leave it. They really don't have control over you or your computer.:)

Loove FB. Thanks to it I have kept in touch with many old friends from HS, college, old work colleagues. Honestly don’t know what I would do with out it. I have friendsships that are virtual FB only now due to distance but thanks to FB are able to keep in touch and even meet up physcally. Just follow a simple rule. Be friends with people you actually know and set your privacy settings accordingly. It’s that simple. . Nothing creepy about it. You are in control ( except the ads but you can block too )

This is all so fascinating! Of course, I had to check out one of the FB pages. This is from the About description of the FE page. Crazy!!

"No Disboard postings. They will be deleted. We like to keep all our members here on Facebook. You can no longer post over there without getting banned and ALL CRUISE PAGES can be found here on facebook in a more user friendly format. They are run by a huge travel agency and think we are stealing members"

The comment about stealing members really gets me. Who cares how many groups a person decides to join and participate in.

Stealing from who? The DIS was here first! :disrocks:

It's only that one FB page that's like that. If you join a FB page that is for your cruise date sailing, it is nothing like that at all. An FE group will be created within it as the cruise approaches. No crazy administrators, strict rules or anything. Just nice people looking forward to their cruises & wanting to spread some warmth via Fish Extenders.

Like others have shared, I have found some FB groups to be friendlier than others. Thankfully, it doesn't take much time to figure this out and "unjoin".

That's the vibe I got from this particular FB admin when I unknowingly joined a cruise group that she was admin to (but she wasn't sailing on.) She requires sign-ups through an on-line FE input form on GoogleDocs then makes the information available at her arbitrarily chosen time. Cruisers share a fair amount of personal information about ourselves & our families regarding FE preferences. When I think about the magnitude of personal information she is collecting and storing (data mining!?!) somewhere else without knowing how else the information is used or how unprotected it is... Creepy.

I have started a group that is working on this issue. Please inbox me for more info. The group is formed to compile a credible complaint to present to Disney, Disney Cruise line and hopefully extinguish this negative element that is overshadowing Disney's cruise community! The money these people are making at the expense of Disney Cruise Line and Disney Corporation because of possible fraud, copyright infringement, etc...this needs to change!
I agree. Disney is very protective of their brand. If you reach out to them, and share your information, they will put a cease and desist order. That's just my 2 cents.

I don‘t know..... i like the idea of going to etsy and buying DCL stickers that I can use to lable my FE gifts. I like the idea that I can pay some one craftier than me to make unique one of a kind Disney themed gifts. I’m sure Disney has their people already on this topic and to be honest am sure they let a lot slide. Just check out etsy. By reporting this you are „not protecting the brand“ and most likely hurting people who have nothing to with this woman.[/QUOTE]

I agree. While I don't buy things from Etsy, I have used graphics provided by some of the FB groups out there which provide graphics for magnets, shirts, FE labels, etc. If you ask Disney to do something about this specific group because you don't like the moderator and how she runs things, then you could open up a can of worms. Disney may decide to not just go after this one group, but to go after other groups that are similar in nature but run by people who aren't as objectionable. They have already asked lots of Etsy sellers to cease and desist.

My two cents is if you don't like this group and the woman running it, then leave. Start your own FB group. I'd rather Disney not be asked to police FB groups.

Not all of them. I know the group mentioned above, but I haven't done an FE from it. I just search ship name/sail date to find a sailing group I can chat with and plan, etc. I don't even do FE anymore because the fun of it has been ruined by the crazy competition, rules, etc. Anywho, generally the sailing groups are good. But the admin of my last one was over the top. She had all posts set to approve, randomly decided what got approved and what didn't, closed threads where people were discussing things, etc. Again, this wasn't an A.K. group, just a sailing group. I didn't do any of the social stuff on the sailing due to the admin. Well now that I think about it, maybe the admin was a friend of A.K...lol.

Who was it, can you tell us please?

It was my group! Started on opening day in October when I booked. I did not allow her to take over my group. She then removed the Sailing off "her" directory page and banned me from her group(s) because I would not allow her to take over the sailing. Even when asked if they wanted to play nice, they refused! That group is a bunch of bullies and if they can't control you or your actions you are tossed out of the world they seem to think they control.
I do not think Disney will be interested in the sticker maker for FEs. I do think Disney will be interested in the fact she is controlling things to the point people are changing their cruises! Cancelling Cruises and not participating in activities on cruises because of this behaviors of this 'group' should be a concern of DCL. The 'group' has a vested interest in controlling these FE/sailing pages, I dare say $ must drive this. Why else would they want to control so much? It would be insanity not to have a motivating factor such as money. The 'group' has multiple items for sale and I believe they make a decent profit from these items they market to people on the cruise sailing/fe pages. I am not asking Disney to police FB or Etsy groups. I want the "group" shut down because they are infringing on the Disney brand, probably making tons of money and the 'group' no way represents anything Disney is about.

I 100% see it the same as you.

Wow. Um. Some people have too much free time on their hands. Or, as has been mentioned, are only looking to make a profit.

On the one hand, that's part of what has built this country. Good for them for trying to make it work for them. And you also have the freedom to vote with your feet and leave those groups, as has been mentioned multiple times here. I would.

I'm an admin of a group for us later this year, just to help someone else out. (I also admin multiple other pages and groups there so have a little experience in that area.) I'm just a member in another group. Neither of them sound anything remotely like the ones y'all describe here. Still amazes me how some people treat others. And it's too bad, too. "Love one another" seems a simpler way to live... ;)

Sounds familiar. I even called them out for their hostility. I heard they deleted the whole thread, probably because they didn't want the collective to see how bad they looked.
