Solo: A Star Wars Story

as for the regular folks, I think a lot depended on what planet you were on. If it was something the Empire wanted resources from then they would go after it and take it over and control it and enslave the people (in some cases) - others that weren't viewed as a threat (say, Alderaan) were largely left alone and just monitored - though they would install a governor loyal to the Empire if need be
I love that grimy, dismal setting that’s been depicted in the last two standalones. Just understanding the atmosphere and the power vacuum that existed after the clone wars is fascinating

For many people the concept didn’t have any appeal. I know it isn’t for me. I don’t want a Han backstory, and it took some coaxing mentally to get myself motivated to see it.

I'm curious why Han's backstory has no appeal?

To me it's seems all his adventures before Star Wars would be one of the more interesting backstory's?

I feel like they could make 2 or 3 movies about that.

I feel like some things are best left to the imagination.

That being said I think the film did an ok job of giving us some backstory. Some of it was a bit ham handed, but overall it was entertaining.

I also think it depends on how establish the character is; like bobba Fett has about 45 minutes of total screen time in the saga, so I’m interested to see some of his escapades in a future film.

Interesting.

I'm the opposite. Other than a cool looking toy from the 80's Boba Fett doesn't hold any appeal to me. I don't find the idea of a movie about him overly exciting. I will go see it though! LOL

Tough for me to get excited after Death of the Jedi er I mean The Last Jedi which laid an egg IMHO. While the back story of Han is appealing just coming off Avengers and looking forward to Deadpool. I can only take so much. Plus Memorial Day is an awful weekend if you ask me.

I'm old school, did Star Wars it's opening week as a kid, I think i drooled all over the ground in my multi hour wait in line, but now... I just don't feel the connection. While I enjoyed Rouge One, I've not been so excited about Ugly Mug Kylo and Miss Wonder Saber Rey and the whole "First Order' just comes off like a poorly written story. Ugh.

Do I wait for BluRay on this one? Doubtful but I was in no rush to see it this weekend.

You are in the exact same boat as me. I have to use a couple of free tickets before our local theater closes, so I think this weekend I will watch it.

One thing that's become clear to me over the past few years is that it's an oversimplification to refer to "SW fans" as a singular group. We don't all rabidly support everything SW for the sake of it being SW. Makes sense after 40 years of the franchise. I think those distinctions mostly showed up in merchandising and secondary media (cartoons, comics, novels, etc). The movies were the one thing SW fans had in common, however, because they were so few and far between. We grumbled about the Prequels, but we still saw them. Maybe now the movies are slipping as well as a common bond.

I've long since realized that SW is much too big of a media empire for me to be interested in everything - and as a result I get that not everyone is going to like everything that's put out. It's a bit sad to lose that shared interest in everything, but it's also exciting if (and that's a big if) Disney uses it to pursue riskier or more eclectic side projects in the SW universe.

That also might help explain Solo's slow start - Disney misjudging the "SW fans" or taking them for granted. Even then, when we're talking a huge movie, SW fans alone aren't enough to carry it - Disney has to appeal to the low information movie goer (who knows nothing about the troubled production, or political/social commentary brouhaha, or all the Internet movie site buzz, or anything really beyond the fact that it's a SW movie). The only take-away I get from that is that Disney can't just slap a SW label on and expect to print money.

well said - definitely appreciate them taking chances - 10 more movies that are similar to what has come before is no fun

And I also can see the idea they took Star Wars fans for granted and thinking just throw anything out there with "Star Wars" on it and they will show-up whenever ... who cares if it is Memorial day weekend ... who cares if it is 2 weeks after Infinity War, etc.

For me I think it’s interesting to look at the more secondary characters and explore their backstory. Last we saw bobba, he was holding his dads head in despair and it’s about 30 years until he crops up again.

Come to think of it a jango fett movie would interest me even more. Especially since it takes place in the pre empire timeframe

Saw it yesterday and really enjoyed. It was fun, adventurous, and informative. I thought the backstory was creative. Who else thought of Thor and Hulk from Ragnorak when Chewie was introduced:chewy: I think there was enough unknown about Han's backstory to do a full movie. I don't read the books but have seen all of the films and most of the cartoons. Maybe people are hating, because they didn't find anything new; maybe it was already in some of the books. I honestly don't try to over-analyze these movies. It's not Gandhi or Dunkirk. They aren't trying to make a statement; they are just fun. I am not looking forward to a Boba Fett movie though. We already know his backstory, unless he's an international playboy, a lounge singer, or a rockstar. They need to do Yoda before Frank Oz can't do it anymore.

Not exactly true. Boba Fett shows up in Clone Wars quite a few times as a whiny kid who is somehow leading a band of loyal mercenaries. He gets embarrassed every time he shows up but somehow keeps staying important. His time in Clone Wars is kind of why I don't have a lot of interest in his story.

It actual gave me a Ragnoral feel - was enjotable, fun ... but not super central to the main storyline

Similarly i’d Rather get a Qui-gon movie than an Obi Wan one

Ah gotcha. I’ve only seen a season and a half of clone wars. That’s a very disturbing revelation

I probably bring up Clone Wars too much in SW discussions but it is the single largest source of cannon in the whole SW setting. All 10 movies combined are just starting to come close to the 30+ hours of Clone Wars. It is hard to describe how much of Star Wars cannon people don't know if they haven't watched Clone Wars, and to a lesser extent, Rebels.

Some of the best characters like Ventress and Ahsoka Tano are defined by these shows. Dooku actual becomes a real character and Grevious gets his time to shine. Lando in Rebels is fantastic and sets the tone for Lando in Solo.

The Father, Son and Daughter are integral to the explanation of what happened to The Force and Bendu provides a whole different perspective on it. The Mandalorians actually get explained so you know where Jengo and Boba, sort of, are supposed to have come from. Without these shows, and the 50-60 hours of cannon they provide, so much is missed

Clone Wars definitely makes Dooku seem “cooler” and more impressive.

I like how Rebels expanding things and took it in a different direction but get what you are saying about Clone Wars

Yeah it’s an overwhelming catalog. I felt wiped after watching season 1 and petered off during 2. I need to pick it up again though

Yeah. Don't get me wrong, not all of Clone Wars is good, some of it is downright bad. But as a source of cannon? And an exploration of the actual Jedi and their powers and society at the time of the fall? Massive.
