New Kohls Account Scam

At the risk of being stupid, how are they getting kohls cash?

Oohhhhh, it's not money for returns - it's like the $10 they get when they spend $50 deal? Can't Kohls track that and just not honor the kohls cash? that seems crazy

I’m so sorry this happened, what a pain. How was the balance still $0 on your Kohl’s account?

I wonder if you can have Kohl's lower your credit limit? Who really needs more than a few hundred there? I guess maybe if you were getting school clothes for several kids or a bunch of Christmas gifts. I got my card forever ago when my income was much lower and my limit is only $400. Kinda glad it's that way!

I checked the balance on my phone first and the balance was zero. I couldn't see any pending charges on my phone. Later I checked it on our desktop computer. The balance was still zero, but I could see some pending charges on the computer that hadn't hit as of last night. They are actually starting to post today. So today my balance is no longer zero.

That's not a bad idea. My limit is not that big ($1000), but it was big enough for them to send several huge boxes to my house!

Thank you OP! I have gotten a few account locked notices and just thought someone must have a similar log in. No idea that was a possible scam and thankfully no weird packages.

This happened to me last May and I feel absolutely terrible that you have to go through this and Kohl's still has not done anything to prevent this type of stuff from happening.

For me, it took months and months for Kohl's to credit my account as I was responsible for setting up the return, having UPS/FedEx/USPS pickup the box and my card would not get credited until the inventory was back in Kohl's system. The hackers maxed out my Kohl's Credit Card ($2500) and I had something like 15-20 boxes shipped to me--hundreds of pajamas, shorts, leggings all in groups of 10 in the same style and size. The crazy thing was, I caught it right away, before any of the boxes shipped and called Kohl's. They could not/would not stop the orders. This was an absolutely complete nightmare for me, with over 30 telephone calls to get their fraud department to do their job. My UPS and FedEX guys absolutely hated me because they had to do double the work on each gigantic box.

Needless to say, I have not spent one dime with Kohl's since then and closed my account with them. My heart rate still goes up when I hear the word Kohl's.

So, stay on top of them....their fraud customer service is absolutely horrible.

Good grief, what terrible customer service. Makes me really glad that I don't do store credit cards.

My guess is in order for Kohl's to do that it will cost money to develop and implement a program and monitor it. It's a whole lot cheaper for Kohl's to leave the burden on cardholders' shoulders. Inexcusable that these large companies are able to simply wave the white flag, throw their hands in the air and claim they aren't responsible/cannot stop the situation. Consumers face dings on their credit report, even for taking a proactive measure like asking for a credit limit to be lowered. Glad I have no store cards and do no business with Kohl's.

Need to be raising a stink with Consumer Protection Agency, state Attorney General, etc.

It sure does look like a lot of work and risk for $200!

(I work for Kohl's)

Why do they do this much work (just) for Kohl's cash? Well, they can take the $50, or $100 or whatever they made through these bogus purchases and buy just about anything online or in the store - including things like XBoxes or Beats headphones or Nike sneakers. Then they can sell or fence those items. Since they didn't pay for the items that "earned" them the cash, it's profit for them.

And I can guess why Kohl's can't stop the use of the stolen cash: these guys are smart. They know that Kohl's gives out the cash on certain days, and it's redeemable the next day. As an example: we were giving out cash until July 18th. You could start using it on July 19th. So they do the online order on July 17 or 18, get the cash in their email and then go shopping on July 19. By the time the hacked person is aware of the bogus sale, the cash has long been used.

The loss prevention folks that work in the store I work in are always trying to stay ahead of the fraud - I've been there a few times when one of them caught the fraud right away - but in store LP is different from online. When you deal with those folks at Kohl's.com, don't back down. They will say anything to get you off the phone - don't let them. Take their names, note the time you called. We'll try to help you in the store, but there is just so much we can do.

I know. We figured out that shopping at Kohl's here in Maryland only made sense if you had a bunch of coupons. Their regular prices were way higher than any other store for the same stuff.

Good grief, what terrible customer service. Makes me really glad that I don't do store credit cards.

Kohl's is a terrible retailer, and the closest thing to a scam company as you can get.

Hrmm, 30% off an item that's marked up 80%, what a deal? Not.

Hint: if you have to use coupons to bring the price down to what it would cost just about everywhere else without coupons, you're getting screwed.

But people love it! I remember 6 years ago when JC Penney got rid of all their promos in favor of "fair and square" pricing. It was a disaster! People prefer to "work the system" and use coupons and shop sales instead.

In other words, "people like to feel clever, even when they are completely stupid."
