Please tell me I am miss informed

Wait, you do? Since when? I don’t think I’ve ever had to take food out of my bag.

When we flew home to my from mco last February they were asking you to take out food to have it x rayed. My dh brought home his chicken and mashed potatoes from dinner the night before. Lol

I've thrown pills in a small container and flown with it domestically and internationally without issue. I've also taken food in a carryon and left it in there.

Whatever you decide make sure it's a decision that isn't going to make you nervous. That's what is going to get you pulled for further checking.

An option to consider is taking a picture of your pill bottle with the prescription information.

Most recently I traveled through Atlanta, Seattle, and Anchorage. In each case the TSA was telling everyone to remove all food items from carryons and place them in a bin.

I remember one time we were coming back from Seattle. We went to a McDonald's before returning the rental car and just stuffed what was left of a couple of Happy Meals and some leftovers from Tim Horton's in a bag. In our hurry we even stuffed a drink in there and forgot to dump that. It was actually soaked, but after tossing the drink we were allowed to keep the Coke-soaked Tim Bits and fries.

That actually got my wife an enhanced search, although it was done quickly. Can't say it made much sense, but it was over with quickly.

I still don't quite get the issue with liquids and gels, when lots of different foods contain liquids that could conceivably be extracted. And in our case they even allowed something through that had been soaked with a liquid.

And does that include baby formula?

There are a lot of special exceptions for children of course. I remember once TSA allowed us to bring two sealed bottles of water through screening, but they swabbed the outside and put them in a testing machine. We also had two cans of Coke which the agent summarily tossed, saying that our kid wouldn't be drinking it. Strangely enough, our two year old would drink it.

I wad told to take food out when travelling last year---TSA agents were repeating the information to remove food often and loudly.. Last month we flew through DTW and SEA and were not told to remove food (nor were TSA agents saying that to others). It might be a random thing now...

TSA's requirements can change depending on the airport and specific security concerns.

Always carry prescription meds in a container with the pharmacy label. I love the idea of carrying just what you need and leaving the rest at home if this is a concern.

As far as food goes, if you have TSA PreCheck, you can probably leave food in your carryon bag. BUT be prepared to remove it if requested. Also be prepared for PreCheck lines to be closed depending on the airport/time of day.

If you do not have PreCheck, then the food may have to come out of the bag. Pack accordingly and have all food items in an easy to find bag.

Do you need the original bottle for controlled substance or can I just bring enough for the weekend

Assuming you are traveling entirely within the USA:

Most states require that prescription medications be carried in the original prescription bottle with the pharmacy label on it. In states that don't require that for all Rx drugs, most or all DO require it for any controlled medications. Even if not required by law, it is the safest option.

Some things to consider:

- if the bottle from the pharmacy is large, you can ask the pharmacy to give you an empty small size labelled bottle for that medication for travel purposes.

- you don't need to to take more than you will need for the trip; leave the rest at home (e.g. put it into the empty previous month's bottle to store at home and only bring the few you need for your trip in the current month's bottle)

- in addition to the labeled pharmacy bottle which shows the medication is yours, you can also carry a copy of the prescription from your doctor

- the pharmacy bottle will protect the medication from things like moisture and light exposure which can degrade the medication; for example, some medications are actually dispensed in their original manufacturer container to protect them, not even being transferred into a pharmacy pill bottle.

ENjoy your trip !

Never take my prescription bottles with me. I put them in different containers.....but always carry on.
Fly 4 or 5 times a year. Never been a oroblem.
They do check food at our airport.

Since a few months ago. At first I was being asked each time. Then sometimes. The last few times not.

When I flew in October last year and January this year I was told I had to remove all food.

I didn't hear it come up through TSA in September at Hartford, but I didn't have any food in my carry on that day so it could just be I didn't notice.
I didn't need to take food out when flying out of Boston a few weeks ago.

I didn’t have to remove any food in August on my round trip flight from Albany to Tampa... But in June from MCO to Albany we did. I think it literally depends on the day and airport.
