The Running Thread - 2019

ATTQOTD: If I could change something about any race it would be having the option to get long sleeve shirts with petite length sleeves. No changes to the body, just the sleeve length.

While I had read about this happening, actually seeing it in action during the 10k blew my mind. Between the smaller race size and my slow 10k time I was less than a mile ahead of the balloon ladies at the mile 1 hairpin turn and there were already people behind them!
I don’t think I’d want a medal if I didn’t finish the race.

Unless I wanted it as a reminder of what went wrong and as a motivation to earn it the next time.

ATTQOTD: Not specific about the actual race. A mail or hotel pickup option (even at additional $) for bibs and shirts for rundisney races. AND/OR busses that go from the expo to the parks.

Race specific: Choose your own adventure courses. A fork comes in the road, what way do you take? Not great idea for PR seeking folk, but would be fun!

ATTQOTD: All mine are RunDisney since 99% of my races are with them. Bring back the unique races. I never got to run one and I’m sad I missed out. This can be a hot topic, but stop giving medals to people who DNF. There’s a woman on Facebook that signs up for races she knows she can’t finish just for the attention from spectators and the pretty medals. Offer race insurance or bring back deferrals. Bring back the DisneyLand races!

ATTQOTD- change Disney Wine and Dine back to a night-time run again.

There............I said it.

Agree 100%. My first half AND first rD race was the night version of W&D. It was great finishing up at Epcot and being able to hang out in the park until 3am partying with all the other runners. I will not pay for this race in it's current form.

I don’t think I’d want a medal if I didn’t finish the race.

Me either. We were supposed to run the cancelled half marathon in 2017. That medal is not even on my medal rack. I didn't run the race, so it doesn't count to me.

i did a 10K in arizona a few years ago that gave away leftover shirts from other races.
They have two races in Las Vegas called the Recycled Race that you get a recycled shirt and a recycled medal for the race. Last year I ran a 10k, got a HM shirt and a Triathlon medal!

ATTQOTD: RnR races need to better manage their corrals. runDisney needs to stop handing out medals to people who DNF. BRING BACK DISNEYLAND RACES.

Yet another substitute QOTD: if you could make one change to one race, what would it be? Asking Boston to modify their qualification times is off limits, but anything else is fair game. Want to institute RFID readers at Disney to prevent corral jumping? Want to give people a time penalty instead of a lap penalty for vomiting during the beer mile? Now's your chance.

I'm going with those that say move W&D back to a night race.

I would also change the way Disney and others hand out medals. It is a finisher's medal, not a you started but couldn't finish medal. If you are swept you don't get a medal no matter the reason unless it is because the race was stopped early or shortened for some reason. Even then I wouldn't personally take the medal for something I didn't do.

Know this one has been discussed before. I would like to see rundisney move out the POT cutoff for the half and marathon. Since such a large percentage of the race field is in the last three corrals, many people have caught on to choosing 2:45 whether it is appropriate or not. Maybe give those that truly are 2:45-3:00 half runners that chance to be in their own corral???

Just having participated in the WDW half last weekend there are a few things that I would change.

First, please get rid of those two guys hosting the pre-race festivities. I know that they have a tough job having to interview the CIGNA representative and other dignitaries but good gravy they seem to have no running knowledge. Carrying on a coherent conversation seemed problematic. Repeatedly blurting out the word amazing to describe the event, the race, the course, the runners, the sponsors, the weather and the volunteers is tedious. Disney is an entertainment company so this seems fixable - perhaps they can't find anyone to get up at 2:00 a.m.?

Second, I was less than impressed with the course. I don't have knowledge of the logistical hurdles so perhaps this is the best they can do. Running through the Magic Kingdom is nice but 11.5+ miles of the course are highway and access roads. The EPCOT portion could be expanded. In any event, the overall course is uninspiring.

These are negatives but my overall impression of the event is overwhelmingly positive.

This is an excellent idea. With the pace limit being a 3:30 half, there's no reason not to give the true 2:45-3 runners their own corral.

To expand on having corrals for folks that can provide POT's outside of the current range, I think Disney needs more transparency in POT conversions and corral placements. Why is it such a huge secret? As long as the requirements are clearly known, the wonky way they calculate could be fair.

I had run a 10 miler this spring at a time I thought would be more than adequate for an "E" placement, but was told by track shack it was like a 5:32 equivalent which was disappointing. I was worried that I would be put in the last corral if I submitted it, so put a 5:30 estimated finished time and was in F with basically everyone else! I finished in 5:16 with a few short picture stops.

With that said, you can totally have a GREAT race no matter your corral placement! I had a complete blast and can now see why people would be willing to run more than 1 marathon.... ;)

All of this!

I agree with everyone about how RunDisney can change things up. One little thing I would love to see is adding a bag to hold all the stuff they give you once you cross the finish line. I appreciate all the things you get but I feel like I’m constantly trying not to drop it all as they just keep pushing us forward.
