This Is Us- Season 3

I think Beth went too far when she brought up the anxiety attacks but at least she took responsibility for bending all the time. Randall didn't even seem to hear what she was saying.

Fair point. All the more reason though to start early in making your needs known. He needed to be taught how to bend. He can’t learn to bend without being given practice.

True. It looks like Beth chose to bend for the sake of the marriage. And as she said, Randall is A LOT to handle and she kind of took the easy way out by submitting to his whims. Makes you wonder what would have happened if she stood up to him early on in the marriage.

We saw during the campaign she asked him to step out of the race for the family. He wouldn't do it. Once again she was left to deal with everything while he pursued his dream. When he wouldn't bow out of the race she didn't challenge him again. Which it appears to have been the case throughout their relationship.

Oh my gosh - just watched this morning - I can't believe there is only one more episode in the season!

But the nacho thing was spot on - he takes the best ones without even realizing it. It's not that he's consciously squashing her.
Problem is when she tells him he is squashing her (like when she lied about the conference and he caught her, which I am NOT condoning, but she told him then), he is not hearing her and not doing anything to change it. You can only do things without realizing it for so long because once someone points it out to you, you can't use that excuse anymore.

They made it seem as if Beth resents the closeness between Randall and Rebecca.

I am so curious what the in between might show us regarding them.

Rebecca’s prosthetics are bad this week.

Holy crap, ummm yep!

consciously squashing her, it's just that he sees what he wants---- telling the roommate he's going to marry Beth (when she'd just asked him not to call)

Sorry PollyannaMom, totally screwed up your quote.

But I thought his reaction to the date was interesting! And on point for the way he sees things.

.... a time-consuming job with a killer commute. - Did he not think that was going to cost him time with his kids?

Nope.

Because Beth has always made things work out.

And around and around we go.

Now that she is refusing to follow him and indulging in her dreams, we are seeing what happens when Beth does not bend to him.

And now we will.

And I predict the aura of Beth's not playing will bring clarity to Randall. I know I am being very optimistic but I do believe he will finally see the dynamic.

Loved this post. And your other.

That's all.

I think Beth went too far when she brought up the anxiety attacks.

At first I did too.

But I changed my mind.

Trying to tread with compassion here -

It was said in response to Randall's point. And it is reality that Beth had to make sure that Randall was okay and in tandem that their family was getting through it all in the best way possible. I know a few on here understand that balance and sacrifice as well.

She loves him and she did that. But an illness in the family does impact the whole and a heck of a lot of choices. And last night Randall did not take in consideration that Beth did not have the same choices/freedom he did, because of his illness. He was all - It was not my fault in any way that you didn't do this or that Beth. That response invalidated the love, time, worry and support she gave him during times when his anxiety overwhelmed him.

Beth's comment came out poorly. But it is absolutely valid.

She doesn't need a thank you. He is her husband. She loves him. And would never have it any other way. But Randall doesn't get to rewrite reality.

Yep. Both. :thumbsup2

Beth didn't always follow through/challenge further. And Randall doesn't hear her fully. And then he continues to do what he wants.

This is why I am optimistic that a breakthrough is coming. Beth has changed the dynamic. And that's where results often come.

@lisaviolet I agree in that his anxiety is a real issue that it requires sacrifice and also that he does not get to rewrite reality. But I think they way she said it will overshadow the other very real issues they have. It filled up the room and in my opinion cancelled out a lot of her other concerns when except for quitting his job, none of his other decisions were the fallout or result of an anxiety attack.

I'm not TeamBeth or TeamRandall; I'm TeamTogether. I do think that they are going to work through this and stay together. That may just be wishful thinking, but I didn't necessarily see them as separated in the flash forward. Too often on tv, one little thing in a relationship doesn't work out and they throw the whole thing away. I hope we're going to see a representation of how a couple can go through changes and still stay together.

Ok, I skipped over all the responses to do another live post. My husband is all tucked in so it’s time to watch lol

• uh Randall, you’re missing time with your girls and sleeping in Philly because of a CHOICE you made. You did it to yourself.

• LOL bringing up Roxanne. It’s so Kevin to not know it’s based on a play.

• not a very collegey first date place, but VERY Randall

• ugh @ having to pay before they eat.

• the Randall and Rebecca being so close would have driven me CRAZY. My husband’s mom died eight or so years ago (before we got together) and he always says we would have gotten along so well but from the stories he’s told, this is how it would have been.

• Randall is nice but he is a LOT.

• Rebecca’s prosthetics are bad this week.

• aww what a sweet proposal.

• LOL Randall’s vows are a speech. He really does always overdo things. He’s a very intense person.

• if I was getting married again I would totally steal these vows

• The nacho theory makes sense.

• William <3

That was a pretty intense episode. I don’t think Beth was trying to play a victim, I think everything she said was true. I didn’t really think about it, but she has been the one to always adjust to his life. I think that happens in most relationships to an extent. Will be interesting to see next week. My episode doesn’t end with a preview of next week so I go in blind every week.

Same with CTV here not showing previews. I like the Facebook page though and always catch them on there!

If their whole marriage consists of her feeling slighted, made to to take the back seat, then how can it go on from this point? I don't think they will end up together. And, honestly, maybe they were never right together if this is her takeaway from the entire marriage, from the first date in fact. Once that level of resentment settles in, it's tough to move forward.

His unyielding nature was so strongly forged by his childhood it's virtually as if Beth will need actual hammer and tongs to get any movement out of Randall. I'm so thankful she looks as if she's quite strong and quite fit, because I want to see them happy together.

It's a shame Beth isn't actually closer with Kevin. Of anyone Kevin will have a keen understanding of what it is to continually yield for Randall's flights of fancy that become life or death priorities. The flashback to the Roxanne phone call and the vows also shows Kevin has a unique relationship with Randall because they've coexisted with an undercurrent of friction between them -- yet their bond never breaks.

How is it that he had two separate phone lines in his dorm room?
