I need to ask your help of what I should be doing right now.

Ding Dang Ray! I hope you are doing OK!

Everyone else has already given you great advice - I just want to say that we will be thinking about you, and *worried* so update us all when you have a chance! 😟

I know it must have been horribly frightening, and I hope that if you find yourself feeling overwhelmed or anxious in the next few days, weeks, or *anytime* in the future, you will consider working with a trained counselor. PTSD is real, and can be triggered by events far less traumatic than what you experienced!

I was hit by a car years ago (as a bipedal pedestrian) and because I was able to jump almost out of the way, it just "clipped" me, and spun me down to the ground after hitting me with the side mirror, but I was sore for days, and that was no where near what you experienced.

I'm *so* sorry this happened to you, and I hope with all my heart that you are fully recovered soon. Your chair can be fixed or replaced, but there is no substitute for you, my friend.

He’s still not back? I have been watching this thread because I wanted to see if he was ok. I hope everything is alright, or at least that he is being given appropriate treatment if he does have injuries.

Ray, so sorry to hear the awful news. Hope everything is okay.

Just seeing this. Ray I hope that you are ok please check in when you get a moment. In the meantime get checked by your medical team including for any potential brain and spinal cord injury, they may not like it but the driver's insurance can pay for an MRI or Cat Scan along with x-rays. The fact that you hit the ground even from a sitting position is concrening added with the weight of your chair even if you had the lighter weight fold and go one alone warrants that you get checked for not only brain and spinal cord injuries but broken bones in general. They (the insurance company) will want to settle as soon as possible with you, my advice is don't settle immediately but wait until you see if there is anything that developes as a result of this. There are some breaks commonly known as stress fractures that can show up later. My sister deals with these in her athletes (mainly high school students but she does work some with university level and some things for younger ages) on a regular basis. A student (often a runner or basketball player) puts constant stress on their leg (common one for this is the lower leg bones) and it eventually wears down causing a break. Initially the student might complain of pain after competing or practicing events such as hurdles, long distance running (this is common in cross country runners), jump balls, ect and seems to be fine afterwards. If an x-ray is taken at that time there is nothing seen it is not until the body starts building calcium deposits to try and repair the bone that the break is detected. Stress fractures are actually one of the worse in some ways fractures that she deals with as a professional because it is very easy for the atheletes to decide that they are fine it is just a little pain and to work through it causing more damage or even worse coaches who are not happy about their star player being pulled by the trainer or a parent that goes your ruining my child's chance and getting recruited by a particualar school and getting a scholarship.

Hello. I apologize. I guess I was sorer than I thought and I haven't been out bed much. I am feeling better. I guess this old man's big old fat body doesn't tolerate being slammed onto the asphalt road. And it is kind of life thought-provoking seeing, feeling a car sideswipe me. One more second and I would have been too far in front of the car. Thank you for calling me, Karen Young. Thank you, everyone, for caring. My physician never called back. I go to him after my last physician retired because he was the husband of a very good physician I worked with at NSH in the NICU. She was always excellent with all of the babies and parents and me. He is a good physician, but it has always been hard to get a hold of him when I need him. I guess that I need to find a more accessible physician. I wanted a quarterback type physician that would be able to refer me to other specialists, I guess. I guess times have changed and it is hard to find a personal physician like I used to have that I could reach. Thank you for all of your caring words and after talking with Karen on the phone I wanted to come online and let you know. I haven't been on the computer either. Sincerely, Ray.

Thanks for checking in.
I had sent a private message to you yesterday and hadn’t heard anything.
I just checked again here before trying to contact you another way. So, very glad to hear you are OK.
I agree with the others who suggest still getting in to see a doctor next week. If any symptoms show up over the weekend, don’t wait.

Hope you are feeling back to your usual soon.

@RaySharpton I was getting ready to call you myself - I had no idea how, but I was going to track you down one way or another!

I know the frustration of trying to find a good doctor - for years, we had a doctor who had known our family *forever*, and I could call day or night. She didn't retire, but was snatched up by a recruiter of an out-of-state medical college, where she is teaching a new generation of doctors. My only solace is that hopefully she is creating the kind of doctor she has always been.

Please keep us posted, my friend! So many of us care about you - it has been too quiet here without you!

Glad to hear from you...Thinking of you and hoping you mend asap!

Sending more hugs and pixie dust...

xoxo Tink

Everyone's given excellent advice! Im so sorry this happened to you, and hope the Doc. follows up fast. Also, as so many others said, the structure of your wheelchair needs a check up too. *hugs and heal up* ~Rebecca

Ray, hope you are feeling better now that some time has passed and your body has figured out how it is actually injured (or not!). Hopefully it is for the positive and the aches are getting better ! Hope you managed to find a doctor to get checked out, and that your wheels checked out ok too.

Take care of yourself and know that you have a whole Disboard family thinking of you and wishing you rapid healing.

SW

Ray, how are you doing? I always find it takes a day or two to really feel those aches to show up after an injury. Check in when you can please.

Ray, I sent you a message/conversation with my experiences finding a specialist in the Atlanta area. Glad to hear you're doing better. Bottom line-I went to 3 different "systems" -Emory, Pinnacle, and the Atlanta Brain and Spine Center. I ultimately chose the Atlanta Brain and Spine Center.

Just a word of warning--if their insurance company calls you THEY ARE NOT YOUR FRIEND. Be very careful about what you say to them because they will take any little thing and twist it to try to come up with a reason why their insured was not at fault. I would tell them you are disabled (obviously) and you need to see any questions in writing before answering.
