The ABCs of a New 'Ohana Adventure-G is for: Greetings From Teppan, Good-Byes, and Good News!!! - COMPLETED 1/7

Well then I also dont really see you switching it up too much other than how early you go. You can't give up a FP for FoP!
You're going to not believe this... but we did.
Well they could always spend their own money! Besides $20 is really not that much. Fran and I do $50 worth of damage at Karamel Kuche!

And this trip they did. They mostly paid for their own drinks and souvenirs.

:music: La, la, la, la, I can't hear you.......

I had never heard of this! Sounds like YUM!

It was so much food!!!

Well except that I don't have any two legged kids that have to go through college. :p

Very true, but your kitties take up a fair amount of $$ and time. ;)

Yay! I'm so glad you were able to get that back, you'll have to tell about that sometime.

Remind me when I see you in November!

I usually leave the last day somewhat open (on a regular trip) so that we can see what we accomplished on the other days and plug in what still needs to be done on the last day. However on the last trip it didn't work out that way, nor will it for this one as it is shorter trip.

We ended up being very lazy and that's okay!!

I think I'm going to try for a mix of old favorites and new things.....I've only got about a day and a half.

Still time enough to do some damage at the kiosks.

 Then again I only pack half the amount of undies for a DVC trip cause I have a washer and dryer in the room. I'll need to rethink that for this upcoming trip as the second half of the stay is in a regular hotel room.

That's sure a nice perk. I did laundry (a big load of it) twice this trip.

I can't believe you micro plan your wardrobe to pack it in baggies. Well, no, yes I can believe it. My daily clothes wouldn't even fit in a gallon baggie. I'd need 2 1/2 gallon baggies for my clothes. :lmao:

It made it so easy each morning or night before! Pulled the baggie out, re-organized my park bag and DONE! If clothes weren't in a baggie, they were in the dirty laundry bag.

Have fun! And I'll be just missing you, I'll be taking off at the beginning of the month!

You're actually IN the air RIGHT NOW!!!

Interesting concept. So when was this? Medieval? Renaissance?
I had no idea either.

Hope you have a magical trip .

Too lazy to go back and quote - yes it sounds crazy to be doing a dessert party at the Christmas party but I am going for it. I did the Frozen/ Illuminations one in May - my first dessert party ever - enjoyed it so giving this one a whirl . Cramming as much as I can into my short park time .
Thanks!! I sure did!!

You are really cramming in a lot, and it sounds like a LOT of fun!! I guess I'd be afraid of spending time at the dessert part and missing out on the other things I'd already paid extra $$ for. I guess though, you'd be watching the fireworks anyway and instead of spening time collecting the treats included you'd spend the same amount of time at the party. Yes?

Hope you are enjoying your trip!!

To answer your question about a plan I definitely always have a plan! Although our MNSSHP was SO busy, my plan kinda went out the window!
I did!!! We all had such a nice time!

Ours was very busy too, but we still got a lot done and had a good time. Might be my last one though.

Love the DisMeets!!!! Living vicariously as usual!
We all had a really nice time! :) I had to juggle making sure I didn't leave my kids too long, but the time I DID get with the DISPeeps was very nice. An update is coming your way very soon!

Ohhh dear...tough one! So Erin McKenna's is probably my favourite little piece of heaven at DTD. (I guess if we're going to use old names for things here, [e.g. DTD] then I should probably call it Babycakes instead!) It's such a luxury to have amazing bakery treats that I can eat safely. I just discovered a new type of cupcake there on our last trip that was rocking my world! I also love Basin, even if I don't purchase anything. But I like their lotion, and Nathan likes the bath bombs, so we sometimes bring a couple of little luxuries home with us. I also remember that my favourite place here when I was a wee little one was Rainforest Cafe! I brought home one of those little pucks that you put in water and it turns into a washcloth, and it was miraculous to me!

Fun things, all! I knew about your Erin's and we share a love of Basin, but the RFC did surprise me. Nice!
It sounded horrifying! I'd find this very stressful. I'm impressed that you will have done it more than once!

And I did it again this time. And it was MUCH better than in May. Maybe they learned some things!!!

I've finally been to Food and Wine! There are a lot of things I can't eat there, and others that I shouldn't eat but did anyway  I liked the crispy pork belly with black beans/tomato/onions from Brazil, and also the liquid nitro truffle.

Almost got the pork belly but didn't. So close! But got other things I'd wanted so it's all good!

Tough call. I think I like Maharaja slightly more as well. I love the tigers, and I'm crazy about the theming and artistry. The prayer flags are beautiful. And I also find this trail tends to feel less congested when we go, compared to the bottlenecks we encounter on the gorilla trail.

Totally agree on ALL of that.

Yes. :( I'm sure it will be a wonderful overhaul. I'm just weirdly emotionally tied to Future World. I will be interested to see what comes next though! If I am being completely objective, I think it's probably time for a serious update. The only thing I'm really sad about is the loss of the Fountain of Nations.

EPCOT is in its current state a NON-park in terms of FW. Everything but the rides is fenced off, Starbucks is gone, The Jammitors are leaving, the fountain is gone, etc.... it's so weird!!! I am excited for the new things coming, but wowza, it sure was shocking!

WS restaurant...hmm...Possibly Teppan Edo. We don't eat habachi at home so it's a novelty, and our meals have been excellent when we've been here. We've also had great meals at Rose and Crown. We're trying La Hacienda for the first time in December! One of my favourite activities that's not food related is to splurge on a henna tattoo. I also love pin trading around the world and chatting with cast members as we go. :)

I have a couple of surprise meals to report on this time. Not surprises as to WHERE, but surprising as to the review/rating I can give.

Yep! Most days! (And we never have little ones along.) We've had a vehicle with us at the parks the last few trips though, so that helps. I find I have a hard time making it through the entire day without a bit of a recharge. But sometimes just taking it easy in a quiet attraction, or over a longer lunch is enough to do the trick.

I find it harder and harder each year I go. I must be old! LOL! But yes, sometimes I long lunch in a TS place does the trick!

Nice! Where did you end up going? I love Columbia Harbor House, and I actually really like Pinocchio's too these days.

PVH, Cosmic and Pecos. More on those coming up!

Fantasmic! is my favourite of the current offerings. I was a big fan of Wishes before it was retired because of the nostalgia associated with it, the reliance on more fireworks, the fact that you could watch it from many places in the park, and because it was story-heavy. When we watch Fantasmic, especially, I always stay till the end. The very last moment of the show is by far the very best part, and I always feel bad for the people who duck out before it and miss out. I like to sit and wait for 15 mins or so after it's over if I'm not in a rush. The theatre clears out quickly and then you don't have to do the stuck-in-a-crowd waddle all the way down that long path.

I think I'd stay longer than that and saunter out letting the crush at the buses clear out. Then again, with DHS being on the Skyliner, I'd be tempted to stay at POP or CBR and take that home now.

Like you, I also collect Disney pins! I have quite a pin problem, to be honest. I also trade, both in the parks, and in mail trades through online Facebook groups. My pin collection is ginormous and getting out of control. But most of my favourite pins are the ones I pick up to represent parts of our trips, like parties or EPCOT festivals, or resort pins. My pride and joy is my Merida pin collection. I also collect Animal Kingdom pins, Sulley pins, Bing Bong pins, current hidden mickeys pins, and sometimes mystery boxes/bags will catch my eye. I've also purchased a few Dooney and Bourke bags that are quite treasured. And even on trips where we're keeping a pretty tight budget, I've taken to bringing home one or two mini tsum tsum plushes from each trip since they're small and easy to pack/store.

I think your pin collection is FAR bigger than mine, I am only getting 2-3 per trip and usually those they kind of, in some say, sum up the trip as a whole for me. I like to get one with the year/date on it, maybe an event I've gone to (F&W, MNSSHP, etc...) or special memory (VIP Tour).

We don't really have traditions for our last day, other than feeling depressed. Often our flights end up being really early in the morning. So I guess one tradition is staying out later than we should at the parks the night before, even though we'll have an early wake up call, because it's just too hard to leave knowing that you'll be on a plane the next day headed home.

I completely get that!!

I'm definitely more of a planner. Even when we decide that a trip will be more loosey-goosey, the closer we get to the actual trip the more I tend to sneak in plans here and there until it's still pretty structured in the end. This November I've decided that we won't do ADRs quite as frequently as on past trips (at most one per day,) and I've made some FPs, but won't necessarily stick to them. ...we'll see how that holds as the trip gets closer.

The more I go, the more I become a non-planner. I have FiPs, but this trip I let them lapse more than any other time I"ve gone. Just busy doing other things, sometimes sleeping! And yes few ADRs too... The QS options just get better and better.

I'm curious to see what you thought of them. I have an opinion, but I'll wait to share it until either you give yours first, or I get to mine in my eventual TR.

I liked them, but not until the 2nd time I saw them. ;) More in my updates...

I hope you had a wonderful trip! You absolutely deserved it. Can't wait to hear about it!

Thanks, Meghan! I had an absolutely wonderful time and it may or may not be my last for a little while. I have other places I want to travel to, even in Florida, so I guess we'll see. Meantime, I'll make this trip last a long while by reporting on it. :)

Ugh, sooo behind, no time to quote, but I SO enjoyed reading your plans. I'm loving following along as FB posts have popped up, too!! Hope you're enjoying all the wonderful-ness of your trip! I really can't wait to read all about it when you return! Safe travels, Liesa and crew!

Thanks for reading along, Jackie! :) Your first update is coming your way in just a few minutes. ;)

Glad you made it home! Hope you survive work unscathed. Looking forward to all of your wonderful stories from the trip!
Thanks, Jackie!! I put in over 43 hours this week inluding 16 at my new job. Yes, it's stressful, and the hours long, but I did survive.

Welcome -Home! Looking forward to seeing how your plans worked out! I just got caught up so I feel like my answers would be moot at this point, but I can't help talking Disney! am a planner, but it seems I help others plan more than my own lately. I'm starting to let the younglings take the lead and just tag along!

Thanks, Tammie!

Yes, I get that too, and honestly, it might be fun to just have someone else plan for you and just enjoy the ride.
Jim's must do is Ohana. I like to try something new all of the time and don't really have a must eat as much as a like to eat. I like to try new cocktails, but revert back to a nice smooth can most often.
I was impressed with SWGE but disappointed with Smugglers. What did you think? Oh Spoiler! NM.
I'm looking forward to our June birthday trip to the world! More fun with babies!

I was kinda the same. I was so busy looking at my buttons to the side of me, I missed the whole show /screen in front of me. Kinda sucked. Next time I just wanna be an engineer; no stress of being the pilot which I absolutely 100% suck at, and no distratction with being the gunner.

You're going to have such a blast!

Kinda funny...I was the opposite.

I thought the decorations/theming were top notch, but once you've gone around and seen it, it's kinda just so much eye candy. I enjoyed SR simply because (as the pilots) you actually have some control over the flight. The gunners can have an impact on the overall score, but trying to target manually is TOUGH. The engineers are kinda just along for the ride. Again, I thought the theming was well done...it FELT like I was on the Falcon. Would be interested to hear your thoughts. PM if you prefer.
See comments in other replies, but yeah, kinda a big money trap with cool stuff in it. I would like to play more with the App stuff and take my droid back someday. I guess I wouldn't mind eating at the sitdown place too (Docking Bay 7) just to say I have, but other than that, no hurry to go back.

P is for: Pre-Vacation Vacation

Well, all good things must come to an end, so they say, but not in this case. It was just the beginning of a glorious nearly month-long vacation beginning with a wonderful, fun-filled, extended weekend at Disney, California! As with every trip I take, the “day” started early. Or late, depending on how you view things. Either way, it was dark. Karilynn (pronounced Car-ee Lynn for those of you who may not know @Malia78 ) had arrived into Salem by train at 7:00PM from the Olympia, WA area and I picked her up on my way home from work. It was a perfect solution for our respective travel needs. We spent a few short hours trying to catch some sleep at my apartment (always an act of futility before flying for me) and at 3:00AM on the dot we pulled out of the lot and were on our way. PDX is about an hour and 15 minutes away and at 4:45 we were in the terminal. Security was a breeze, so I had my coffee in hand in no time.

Somewhere along the way, Kari informed me she had upgraded to first class, or whatever Alaska calls it, and I gave her the appropriate stink eye as I boarded. She was adequately remorseful (you can tell by the well-disguised smirk).

but little did she know the plane would be half empty so I had a little karma party as I settled into my entire row for a 2-hour nap LAYING DOWN while we flew to Santa Ana.

We had both decided to travel only with carry-ons , which made for some tough decisions about logistics. But we are extra and managed to fit what we absolutely needed into small bags. With no checked luggage, we breezed out of the tiny airport and into a Lyft in 10 minutes. Because I suck, I forgot my sunglasses, but our Lyft driver had me covered and handed me some, telling me they were now mine. SCORE! She says folks leave them in her car all the time and she just gives them away. Yes, I tipped her well. Ironically, it was Kari who ended up using them for most of the trip because A) I need prescription sunnies (I forgot mine in my glovebox) and B) she had “lost” hers at Alison’s. (They ended up being found on Alison’s driveway the next day.)

We chicks!

We landed about 8:30 and were IN SW:GE and OFF MF:SR by 10:00!!! First, of course, we had to store our stuff in lockers near the park entrance. Easy peasy! Just to be thorough in my TR Reporting, yes, a large-sized locker at Disney IS large enough to fit a standard-sized, loaded backpack with room to spare. I put in my carpetbag-style bag, my camera bag, and my small purse and there was still about 12 inches of room above that to spare and it was only around $10- far less than checking with Alaska and saves a ton of time at the carousel.

The park is so beautiful all dressed up for Fall. I LOVE the Autumn decorations at Disney parks more than any other time of year! The huge array of Disney-real carved pumpkins in all the windows and storefronts along Main Street, the garlands, and window displays are so festive and fun! We spent a few minutes taking photos as we made our way towards the back of the park.

Kari and I travel well together (at least I think so) and we’d agreed that this day would be relaxed and slow. The next day would be FULL and fast-paced so Saturday we wanted to just take in the atmosphere and details of SW:GE and other areas and not focus on rides. However, we did end up on a few things. But first, Star Wars. Oddly, neither of us had the foggiest idea how to get there, so we asked. LOL! Map be damned. It didn’t take long to find it behind Frontierland. The transition between lands I found to be particulary well done and much smoother than it's Florida sister.

A few from here and there:

The intergalactic symbol for drinks!!

My take on SW:GE? I am going to have to be brutally honest here…. Disney did a whiz-bang job on theming and Imagineering of details, but after spending 3 or 4 visits there now (including the Florida portions of my trip) I’m in no hurry to go back. The ride is fun, but nowhere near worth more than a 45ish-minute wait. The Play App stuff IS fun, building a droid IS fun (I’ll go into detail on this in a much later update) and photographing is nice, but after you’ve done it a few times, it is simply a gigantic money-grabbing blackhole. Oga’s is astronomically expensive, the merchandise likewise. It really feels like a giant, over-priced gift shop with cool theming. I am not a Star Wars hyper-fan, so perhaps it would be more enjoyable for those folks. I enjoy the movies okay and was excited about seeing what Disney did with it, but even after experiencing it myself, I am not rabid. I’ll certainly share more (a lot more) in upcoming TR chapters about the various things to do there, but I have no need to hurry back anytime soon. I super enjoyed the CMs in character, the obvious and incredible effort on artistic elements such as the hand-painted “rockwork”, and roaming character interaction, but…

A few more from the ride and area:

Hondo:

Anyway, back to our relaxing sort of day. I LOVE that kind of day. After our ride on MF:SM, we simply walked around looking at details, taking photos, and finding some food.

A mini-review:

We ended up at Ronto’s Roasters after our ride, both of us trying to keep costs down to a bare minimum for food. Mostly. This was close by and we were both curious about the new offerings in this new and exciting place. The menu is strikingly limited with only ONE lunch-y/dinner-y option and TWO breakfast-y options for food. So obviously, we were stuck with the:

Ronto Wrap- roasted pork and grilled pork sausage with peppercorn sauce and tangy slaw wrapped in pita $12.99

The venue itself is super cute and VERY well-themed. 8D-J8, the droid, is turning a spit of roasting “Nuna” beast complete with claws all trussed up cute-like. The podracer engine used to provide the fire is super cool. I love the open-air design and the little touches of street-food flair they’ve added to it.

Bad photo, but I did find a Hidden Mickey:

Now a word about the food: In general, it was tasty, although the addition of other meats along with the sausage was overkill IMHO. I did enjoy the slaw and peppercorn sauce, but I don’t think Kari did (?). I found the pita to be warm and soft and the whole dish quite good, but it was BIG. In hindsight, we should have split one; for $14 we could have easily shared and had more than enough food. I got ice water saving my $ for something at Oga’s later.

I won’t go into the ride details as you either can or have read about it already from other sources. We were both chosen as gunners and I guess, while I can say the ride is fun, my one complaint is that I spent 90% of my time pushing buttons off to the side instead of actually watching the screen/ride in front of me. I know there is an auto option now but didn’t then and it kinda made for a non-experience for me. I had no idea what the storyline even was after I got off. Since then, I’ve also ridden as Pilot, and while more interactive, that was not absent of a fair amount of stress. In the end, I prefer FOP by a longshot.

I’ll leave off here with a few more area photos and pick it up again in my next update with where we went next in our tour of Batuu.

It’s great to be back with you, Friends, but wish I was still in Florida soaking up all the warm sunshine. Have patience with me as I try to get settled back in and take care of some real life work that piled up while I was gone. I know it’s probably not hard to believe, but I literally just got my suitcase up the 3 flights of stairs about 10 minutes ago with my son’s help. Unpacking is NOT my strong point. I worked 43.5 hours this week between my 2 jobs and I’m still jet-lagged a little. I know, excuses, excuses… I’ll get there…

Great start ! Now get to unpacking ; ) . Looking forward to reading more.

And I did it again this time. And it was MUCH better than in May. Maybe they learned some things!!!

Nice! That sounds encouraging!

Ooh this hurts my heart. I'm sure the transformation will be very interesting. The in-between time will be sad. We've actually got a couple of budget trips booked between now and Christmas. Somehow I don't expect we'll be spending much time in what used to be Future World.

I have a couple of surprise meals to report on this time. Not surprises as to WHERE, but surprising as to the review/rating I can give.

I'm intrigued...

I've got a pin problem. I've done a little too much pin splurging on our trips over the last few years. But an equally relevant part of the problem is that I'm involved in a pretty active online pin community here at home in between trips, so it really has become an all-the-time type of hobby. On the upside, I've "met" some really interesting people, kind of like I have through the Dis, by doing pin trades through the mail with fellow Disney-obsessed Canadians.

But no matter the how big or small the collection, I love when people appreciate pins that mean something to them, or remind them of memories. That's what's so special to me about a collection like that.

The more I go, the more I become a non-planner. I have FiPs, but this trip I let them lapse more than any other time I"ve gone. Just busy doing other things, sometimes sleeping! And yes few ADRs too... The QS options just get better and better.

I think this is an awesome approach to Disney! Life is too short to worry too much over the plan. Maybe I'll convince myself to give this a try more and more.

Thanks, Meghan! I had an absolutely wonderful time and it may or may not be my last for a little while. I have other places I want to travel to, even in Florida, so I guess we'll see. Meantime, I'll make this trip last a long while by reporting on it. :)

I'm so glad to hear that!

We've got our annual passes now until August, so we've got at least two more trips booked, and I'd be surprised if we don't manage to squeeze in a third sometime in the spring after I graduate if our budget allows for it. But after that I'm thinking we might try some other places as well. I know we'll get back to Disney eventually. And those "other places" may end up involving some other Disney parks, for that matter. The only park I've ever been to other than WDW is Hong Kong Disneyland, and that was only for a day. Nathan's never been to any others. We'd love to do California, or Paris someday! And there's so much of the world to see, that I think there's nothing wrong with spending your time and money away from Disney to explore it. I look forward to staying posted on your other future travels as well!

Wow! This is the dream. So very rare.

:cloud9:

Holy cow! Now that's an impressive Lyft driver.

I've only been once in WDW, but I can totally see this. I'm not much of a fan, though I can appreciate Star Wars. We'll probably keep going back for Nathan's sake, because he's a super fan, but it doesn't really hold much appeal for me after you've taken in all the details in the imagineering. I DO want to hear about building a droid though!

Have patience with me as I try to get settled back in and take care of some real life work that piled up while I was gone.

Take your time, and be kind to yourself! We've all been there. We'll be here whenever you are.

Late to the party, always eat- WDW-Biergarten; DLR-Everything, so far, there are several we have left to hit up, and I have really gotten after the seasonal food the past two trips.

One and done- WDW Boatwrights. DLR-nothing as of yet, but see previous remark re: DLR.

Welcome back! I found your verdict on GE interesting as it is exactly what I think my reaction to it will be.

It sounds like a great trip to WDW with your kids! I hope the memories you made will help during those work weeks with too many hours like the last one!

Whoa! Lots! And yes, you will definitely be part of the Year of EPCOT Transition. LOL! You won't spend much time in there, BUT, you will perhaps see the gradual makeover and that's exciting. Just wish the Fountain was not down/removed/whatever...

I've got a pin problem. I've done a little too much pin splurging on our trips over the last few years. I love that it's a hobby than has netted you some friends along the way! That's what makes any hobby that much extra! :goodvibes I have my little collection board right by my coffee maker, so see the every single day. I love that!

I think this is an awesome approach to Disney! Life is too short to worry too much over the plan. Maybe I'll convince myself to give this a try more and more.

I'll be looking forward to how that works out. :)

That was me last year. Mine expired on 10/1 and I'm done. I will likely do some long weekends in Cali because it's so inexpensive for me, but I have my eyes on an East African safari and a trip/cruise to Europe at some point.

I've only been once in WDW, but I can totally see this. I'm not much of a fan, though I can appreciate Star Wars. I DO want to hear about building a droid though!

I'm like that too with other Disney areas/entertainment. I'm not a big fan of the Avatar movie, but adore what Disney has done with it, for example. Honestly, handpainted rocks anywhere would wow me. But like you, while I enjoy the movies I don't know every character, vehicle type or alien species. LOL! The stuff for sale loses its appeal when it's a $5 plush being sold for $60. No thanks.
Take your time, and be kind to yourself! We've all been there. We'll be here whenever you are.
One day at at time. :)

OH no! One is never "late" to a SteppeParty! Strap on yur boots there, Professor, and enjoy the ride! I do enjoy the Biergarten having been a couple times, but lately I've gone in the Fall when F&W is on and a heavy meal after eating my weight in International snacks is a no-go. But yes, fun. I love me some Oom-pah-pah and a rousing polka. Schnitzel ain't too bad either. ;)

Boatwrights was GROSS! I've eaten there once a while back and never again. The food was bland and well... simply unremarkable. It'll fill a void in an emergency, but it's gotta be just that.

MMmm... Plaza Fried Chicken.

It sounds like a great trip to WDW with your kids! I hope the memories you made will help during those work weeks with too many hours like the last one!
THanks!! It was a nice, long few weeks of playing at Disney parks! Yeah, while I can appreciate the effort and artisitry, after that... meh.

We had a really wonderful time. There were some ups and downs, but for the most part we got along okay and made some nice memories. I think ALL of my weeks from here on our are going to be long with having added that 5th day. :/
