DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Hello everyone! I am new to this place and this thread in specific. Once I saw a thread dedicated to other dads who enjoy disney as much as their kids (if not more sometimes) I felt compelled to look in. I am excited to get to know you all. I am 29 years old, I have two children 9 and 4. I have always dreamed of being an imagineer and am trying to move closer to that goal day by day. Thank you for setting up a place like this and nice to meet you all.

I’m being curious and wondering what everyone thinks in general about travel with older children. When is the cut off when you say “you’re old enough, this trip is at your expense”?

Well, the last trip they paid for everything for them selves. But We have paid for full trip to WDW and a Disney cruise for them, their husbands and children...so, never?!?

I’m being curious and wondering what everyone thinks in general about travel with older children. When is the cut off when you say “you’re old enough, this trip is at your expense”? The next trip I take (whenever that is) oldest DD will be 20+. All our previous trips I paid for everything. Just trying to figure out how that should change.
I think that really depends on individual circumstances...

A couple years ago, I took my Son, Daughter-in-law and grandsons and MOSTLY treated them, but it was by my choice. They were responsible only for their meals. We stayed DVC at AKL, so lodging didn't cost me anything more than what I pay in annual dues and I bought their tickets simply because I knew it would be cost prohibitive for them otherwise. I was going to take my daughter and her boys in 2020, but didn't get the chance.

The younger 3 kids (who are now 22, 21 and almost 19) went with us many times when they were younger, so I may hold off a few years before considering taking (or treating) them as "adults".

I wish, the closest thing is going to be NOV 17 going to the Christmas party, which I'm personally excited for. Also, I love the KH Goofy avatar!
I was going to PM you, but either you have that blocked or you're new enough I can't. I knew when you're new, you can't start a PM, but I thought I could still PM you.
(PM = Private Message)

If you're going to be down here for the 17th, it's possible we can meet up. I just checked and the 17th is a Sunday, so not likely we can do the party that day (sucks having to work the next day). Still trying to decide what day we're going to go because during the week is harder, but better (lower) crowds.

I debated on how much of this trip I was going to end up paying for. But we haven't been since 2013 and I told the girls on that trip we wouldn't be going back. So I'm paying for us to go and she gets to pay for what she wants to do when she gets there. The BF is on his own. I'm really hoping they're not still together when we get ready to make this trip anyway I don't like the guy

I think we would probably keep paying as long as he is in school so if all goes to his plan that means another 8 years. That being said we are doing a cruise in March, didn't tell him yet and we aren't taking him.

Checked into Aulani today and survived the food run to Target (staying on our DVC points in a 1-bedroom, so we’re taking full advantage of the full size fridge). Also when we got to HNL car rental dude did the free upgrade to a Mercedes GL 250 with 54 miles on it

Sweet....have fun storming the island!

I could see it going either way. I feel like if the trip was my idea and I wanted all of my family there with me, I would have an obligation to cover at least some of the costs. If I said we were going to Disney World and my now employed and living-on-his-or-her-own child said they wanted to come, too, then I feel like the onus would be more on them.

Afternoon boys from a Sunny but chilly London. Work has started to calm down now the 2020 projections are in and now we are in a bit of a lull before it all picks up again in Dec as we gear up again, and the Halloween shenanigans are over on the home front. And you know, the whole saving the world on behalf of Her Majesty whilst drinking a Martini and seducing totty all over the globe takes up more time than I would like. Tennis tonight with one of the school dads so we'll see how that goes along with the London Marathon training. Hope all is well in the Disdad world, and I should be a more regular contributor as I have been of late. Mikey, I'm no Biskit apologist, but I don't think we can lie all of our troubles at young Mr Trubisky's door. Just my tuppence.

‘Morning all…
Nothing to report but I do hope that the world is treating y’all well.

It sounds a lot like the Keto diet. I don't eat excess fat or take any supplements, just stay under 30 carbs a day, which ain't a lot. There are carbs in fruits and vegetables, so I limit those. I eat a meat and cheese, and usually a cole slaw or salad. I switched to water beer (Miller Lite) which has 3.? carbs. For the first time in my life, I'm not hungry for food all the time. I think the end/ maintenance limit is 100 carbs a day, but I won't get there for quite awhile.
Nope, no supplements or adding of extra anything. Don’t work very hard on counting anything either other than to note how much sugar was added to a product (and generally avoid those things). Meat, dairy, veg and fruit pretty much rule the plate. We’ll be having brats & kraut tonight (one of our favorites). Might even allow myself a beer as desert. It took a while for me to get to where I wasn’t always hungry, but that’s not been an issue for some time. On those occasions where I just can’t stand it I’ll either grab a hand full of nuts (generally cashews) or a piece of jerky. Those generally curb the muchies.

Checking in, as Rob would say the "overlords" are here from Switzerland for budget meetings over the next few days.
Overlords are a pain in the…

Ahem…

May you survive the meeting and may those “Seagull Managers” fly away soon.

Welcome sir.
We’re glad to have you along.
Just grab a beer from the clubhouse fridge, kick the empty pizza boxes out of the way and join in.

Where about do you live and what are you doing toward becoming an imagineer?

Got back back from Sherbrooke, Quebec a bit later than expected. We lost in the bronze medal match yesterday and as a result never left the gym until about 8 pm. Given the fact that we were in the gym for just about 12 hours and the drive home takes almost 8 hours we opted to stop along the way and drive home today.

I did get back in time to run to the office, grab the files I need to meetings in Winnipeg this week. Flying out tomorrow around lunch.
A good run and a tough loss I’m sure.

You’ve become quit the road warrior of late.
How many more work trip do they got planned for you the rest of the year?

There were 20 pages of post since the last time I read one. Made it about 4 post and just skipped to the end. I'm sure I didn't miss anything important.
Know us well, don’t ya’?

So my oldest informed me I was taking her and her boyfriend to Disney for her 21st birthday, so she can drink around the world and do the monorail crawl . At least she gave me a heads up, so I'm now planning a May 2021 trip.
Ya’ gott’a love it when your young’ens decide to dictate terms. :lmao:

I'm probably paying for her room and park ticket. I have to pay for me and DW anyway. The BF is on his own. And she has to bring cash for the drinks.
Well… if y’all are going anyway.

Actually, this sounds like a fair plan, if you’ve got the funds to make it happen (more on that in a minute).

Evening fellas. Of course it’s probably Tuesday for most of you. Checked into Aulani today and survived the food run to Target (staying on our DVC points in a 1-bedroom, so we’re taking full advantage of the full size fridge). Also when we got to HNL car rental dude did the free upgrade to a Mercedes GL 250 with 54 miles on it.
It’s a tough job you got there but someone has to do it.

Take advantage of the amenities and have fun storming the islands.

Interesting…

Lot of factors that can go into that one, but the big ones for us are 1) do the kids have the extra cash to travel anywhere at all (much less Disney), and 2) do you care. I’m not being facetious. It’s just a function of are you going anyway and would you like to have them come along. Our young’en is still trying to get his world organized and doesn’t have extra cash to do pretty much anything. As a result, we have taken at least one trip to Da’ World without him (and have another one planed actually, but that’s a different story). Now, all that said, we would really like to have him along with us at Da’ World (especially his momma) so we are also thinking about putting together a trip and offering to pay for the ticket and room, but leave the expenses up to him. At least that’s the plan, but it’s also very contingent on whether or not I remain employed, so we’ll see.

So I'm paying for us to go and she gets to pay for what she wants to do when she gets there. The BF is on his own. I'm really hoping they're not still together when we get ready to make this trip anyway I don't like the guy
You’ve got a daughter… Somehow, I don’t see you liking any guy. ;)

We all know that not a one of us was ever good enough to suit our father-in-laws and that’s not something that’ll be changing any time in the future (or for any generation).

The BF is on his own. I'm really hoping they're not still together when we get ready to make this trip anyway I don't like the guy

Easy fix—a stern look, a shotgun, and the speech titled “hey junior, what are your intentions with my little girl.” 60 percent of the time it works every time!

Well, I voted today. Got to see the new license scanner, code generator, and voting machines. Today, it's whether or not the governor who passed an unconstitutional law take away my pension gets re-elected. You know where I stand.

I just noticed... about 75 more messages posted and I'll be hitting 25K.... Boggles the mind.

Didn't know you were that full of it?

Thanks but we lost.

Sorry. I read that wrong.

Wow looks like I missed over a weeks worth of posts. Thank the heavens rec cheer is over, unfortunately DD team lost in our local “Super Bowl” at least now I can rest for a week before competitive cheer starts.

Have a work friend whose daughter is in competitive cheer. The schedule seems quite overwhelming. Good luck.

That's a great idea.

The wife and boy fell asleep early, so the Jameson is flowing and I’m going to watch some John Wayne on the iPad. Sorry to report the high was around 89° F today and the low will be a chilly 72° F. Thankfully I brought the tuque in the carry on! 😂

Great upgrade. Let us know about Aulani. Never been, but we've considered. We thought about using points at DL resort first, but a long trip to both resorts sounds fun.

I'm just now starting this as my oldest will be 18 in January. For me, I'm paying for everything while we are together on vacation - Disney or otherwise. It's a family vacation, so that's on me. And, I buy them a tshirt or other souvenirs within reason, i.e., tie fighter popcorn dispenser, and if they want more, then they can use their own money.

But, I don't let them bring friends on vacation as it's family time. So, as it pertained to the 21 year old drink around the world plan, then yes, we would plan a family vacation around that time and I would pay, including drinks. As for bringing friends, I definitely would not pay for their room or tickets. And, they wouldn't a 5th person in the car for a drive down, and I wouldn't buy them a flight ticket. I might pick up the tab for one birthday dinner together, but I'm not buying them drinks around the world.

Thanks for stopping by in between secret missions. Maybe her majesty will green light the hit on Trubisky, and the Bears can go about the business of drafting another bad QB over the other superstars in the same class (Mahomes, Watson).

I did the whole food journal thing for the first month. Now, I'm blessed with a good enough memory that I don't have to look up everything or write it down. I'm hoping to make this a permanent lifestyle change, so the weight doesn't return. I know that while at WDW, I'm eating Dole Whips, Mickey Ice Cream Sandwiches, churros, Mickey candy apples, and whatever other junk my heart desires. Other than that, the only thing I really miss right now is pizza and good beer.

My spirit animal. For my wife and I, the boy is only 5 but we’ve had this discussion. Once he’s out of the house and paying his own way in life, my view is that paying for trips ends unless we really want him there. If he’s out of the house but in college, it’s kind of hit or miss with me. He definitely won’t have the cash to go. But I’d want to take him if it’s something he really wanted to do. And if he didn’t expect to go just because he’s our son.

But my wife thinks that we should always take him. Until I tell her I’ll fly business or first class and I’ll take the cost of her business or first class ticket, split it, and then her and the boy can fly coach. More than one way to skin a cat!

Okay, that makes more sense (to me. YMMV) We did similar when we took DD and her BF to Vancouver. They got their own room and paid themselves. But we rented the car and transported them everywhere with us.
Checked into Aulani today
Nice! It's a gorgeous resort. Been there, but didn't stay there.
Also when we got to HNL car rental dude did the free upgrade to a Mercedes GL 250 with 54 miles on it.
Score!

How you must be suffering, so!

Well, I've done it with both my DDs individually. When I took youngest DD for her birthday celebration, I paid for everything. But when older DD asked me to go with her to WDW, I paid for the hotel, but she paid her own tickets/airfare/meals. But I often would just pay for the meals myself anyways. Not always... wanted her to know it was a "gift" and not an expectation.
And you know, the whole saving the world on behalf of Her Majesty whilst drinking a Martini and seducing totty all over the globe takes up more time than I would like.
The sacrifices you do for our planet just boggle the mind.
My wife would say 35. For me, it’s 7.
:lmao:
Didn't know you were that full of it?
Oh, absolutely. My TRs keep me very busy, actually.

Top O the Mornin Dads! Finished budget presentation and went fairly well, no complaints and no major issues with our plan despite having a bit of a tough year this year. Still have to wait as they can tell our CEO they want $x more of this or that before heading out tomorrow. Looking forward to just a relaxing a night at home with the Mrs now that she is back. Have a good one gents..........

Nice planning Aulani for next June, If DVC rooms are still available at our 7 month - they are going quick. Also a big John Wayne fan here as well, enjoy your trip.

They ain't paid yet, at least not in full or anywhere close to in full. DS is still in school and he still enjoys going with us or just our guys trips to things. DD and SIL have been covered as they are just starting out, bought a house without any help form us, etc. They have been on their own to get there and then we pretty much take care of them from there though they do buy a snack or drink for us now and then. Like others have referenced, if we want a family vacation somewhere, then we foot most of the bill. Aulani next year with all 5 of us, DD & SIL on on their own for flights and we have most of the rest. Big reason we invested so in DVC was for family vacations.
Well, the last trip they paid for everything for them selves. But We have paid for full trip to WDW and a Disney cruise for them, their husbands and children...so, never?!?
What he said.

Welcome back! On Tubisky I hear ya about others. Like the dumb GM that traded up to #2 and took him over Mahomes and Watson. The coach that has gone brain dead on play calling. Though you can't expect a defense to be on the field for 40 of 60 minutes due to things like 5 straight 3 and outs by the offense, for such a touted D, they need to make a few more plays to get off the field.

Hey guys, thanks for all the discussion on taking adult children on trips.
As with many things, there's no right answer.
I guess it does come down to personal choice and individual circumstances.
For me I think if I wanted the whole family together on a trip, I would offer to pay, certainly while she's in university and doesn't really have the financial flexibility to do it.

You’ve become quit the road warrior of late.
How many more work trip do they got planned for you the rest of the year?

This is it for work trips until the end of January, couple more coaching trips to take care of by the middle of December. November and June are my busiest work travel months and it just so happens November is our busiest month period. Doing all this travel while getting ready for our one day conference, AGM and sport awards that happen at the end of November.

Been there done that. Some may tire of reading this from me, but guys, enjoy every minute of the kids activities, sports, trips or whatever as before you know it you'll be like where did the time go? Make great memories and enjoy!

Oh I most definitely do, although this is how I portray myself...
