Masks?

I haven't worn one as I'm not sick, no cough. Masks won't protect you from catching anything unless you have the N95 ones, which should be saved for medical personnel due to the shortage. Surgical masks and the like will protect OTHER PEOPLE from YOU if sneeze or have a cough as it stops you from spreading anything when you breathe out, cough or sneeze.

even talking spreads droplets, stand in front of the mirror and say something with a lot of P, T, or other hard consonants. Laughing can even cause you to exhale harder than normal. What about swallowing something that "goes down the wrong way" (one of my kids felt this was only possible if you ate while standing on your head 🤣) and that leads to a fit of coughing and sputtering- I've been known to do this when a giggle catches me off guard even. I'm not trying to be snarky just pointing out that even before you start coughing from COVID-19 it's possible for you to be spreading the virus.
I wear my mask for you, you wear your mask for me.

I just stumbled on this site with direction for making Character masks! OMG super cute but also rather complicated -- just thought if there's anyone out there with time on your hands and the ability to actually follow the instructions might be interested. I know I will attempt a Donald one if this becomes a long-term requirement. I currently have a Donald one & a Mickey one but these are too cute to ignore :P

It calls for a few obscure materials - either Freezer paper which you can find at a grocery store OR printable fabric sheets and I found those on both the Michael's & Staples websites and they're both currently doing curbside pickup.

I didn’t look through the instructions because I’m about as far from crafty as it gets...but my first thought looking at these is I wonder if repurposing old disney shirts could be an easier approach with a similar outcome.

I bet worn/ill-fitting shirts would be a bit easier to come by in some of our houses!

Excellent idea! I made this one from a pair of pj pants that just didn't fit my body well AT ALL

MIchaels has been absolutely amazing for curbside pick-up!!! Really quick as in hours.

Canadian Tire has been absolutely terrible for curbside pickup. Slllloowwwww as in days and days and days.

Which Canadian supplier? I'm looking for one of those.

I am not the poster you were asking, but I just ordered some masks yesterday from a Canadian clothing company. The company is called Jerico, they are located in Toronto and their products are made in Canada, including the masks. I have purchased bamboo/cotton scarves and tshirts from them previously, so was excited when they announced through their email list and FB page that they now had masks available.

Their main website: https://jerico.ca/

The masks product page: https://jerico.ca/productdetail.aspx?c=1&s=0&pid=458

I ordered some of their masks yesterday [as well as some more scarves] so haven't received them yet to be able to comment on them specifically. But based on my previous experience with the company I am *expecting* a quality product.

Also, Canadian travel clothing icon Tilley Endurables is now selling non-medical face masks: https://www.tilley.com/ca_en/tilley-face-masks-non-medical.html and face shields: https://www.tilley.com/ca_en/catalogsearch/result/?q=ths+tcs

I purchased some of the Tilley ones when they first came out, so we've already received them. Comfortable, though not as good a fit as I would like, but that is my face dimensions - they fit better on my sister. One nice feature is adjustable elastic ear loops.

This will be one of the challenges of buying cloth face masks vs making your own -- fit. Some will fit well and hopefully your first purchase is that ! But others may not be an ideal fit.

Finally, I bought some from the US, again from a company I have done business with before for their other clothing. However, it is taking **forever** to make it through the postal system. Personally, I would recommend a Canadian supplier if possible, although even those are having delivery issues regardless of carrier - just not as long a delivery time.

We are making some of our own, too, I just haven't gotten round to making as many as I would like so we are also trying some of the commercially available ones. We plan to have several each so we don't have to wash them each day.

Yeah .. forget about Crappy Tire! But Staples, I can't say enough good things about their service right now. My Surface died on March 24th, ordered a new one on the 25th @1 pm, within 30 minutes i got a phone call from their head office confirming that I had ordered something so expensive, asked for the exact product number, which store and who would be picking it up. Less than 15 minutes later got the email that it was ready for pick-up and by 3 i was already setting it up!

Unless you have been tested and/or not been near any other humans for over two weeks, there is no definite way to know if you have covid or not.

Not "being sick" and not having a cough are insufficient. A LARGE percentage of people who have covid are now believed to be either asymptomatic (won't develop symptoms) or presymptomatic (infected and contagious, and are in the period a few days before they start to show symptoms).

These asymptomatic and presymptomatic people do not have symptoms but are contagious and can spread covid to others, even just through talking - no coughing or sneezing required. That is why people are being encouraged or required, depending on jurisdiction, to wear a cloth face mask.

See CDC: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/cloth-face-cover.html

Finally, cloth face masks DO offer a bit of protection to the wearer, but not nearly as much as N95 or surgical medical masks. There have been a number of studies that have demonstrated that they do block SOME particles/droplets, but it may be as low as single digit percents upto as high as around 70% depending on the design, materials -- and of course in an ideal situation, so wearer actions have an impact too. None of the studies I have seen looked at the covid virus specifically, but looked at particle size and there are some influenza studies out there too. But the PRIMARY purpose of a cloth face mask is to protect OTHERS from the wearer, and that they do a decent job for casual contact especially when distancing is also maintained.

Very few people outside of hospitals and medical facilities are wearing masks here in BC, more specifically Vancouver Island. People have been told NOT wear surgical or N95 masks unless they are sick, work in medical facilities. If you make your own that's great! All the power to you. Saving PPE for medical personnel has been stressed more that having the general population wear them. Social distancing for 2m+ and proper hand washing, only going out when required and not touching your face seems to work very well. The moment you touch the mask to adjust it you negate almost any advantage you gained by putting it on. The reason the general public has not yet been instructed to wear masks and gloves is because most people don't know how to wear and use it properly. I think the masks and gloves give people a false sense of security, and they forget the social distancing and hand washing.

I wonder if it will be like the no using cloth bag thing, where THEY have to supply the bags / or in this case masks?

I think the two are pretty different. I would guess we have to bring our own. The article says that a wide range of coverings will count though, including secured scarves or homemade masks.

I don’t know if this is verified, but it looks like masks are going to be compulsory at costco starting next week.

This is definitely the case for Costco in the US.

you’re exactly right. the red flag deals article seems to be saying that the change is very new for US stores, and that they’re expecting the same change to show up on canada’s site soon.

edit: from a quick look through the canadian and us sites, it looks like other than masks, the policies are very very similar. i’m guessing that’s why the article i posted anticipates well see the same rule soon.

Some Chinese supermarkets require masks and temperature check before entering stores now. They have arrows on the floor to direct one way traffic in the store but not many people notice the signage or follow the signage. Some small convenience stores with tight space also require masks now. It’s hard to keep the 2 m distance in a small space so wearing masks is necessary. The cloth mask I bought is a bit tight. If I wear it for too long, the back of my ears hurt. It’s better to buy masks with adjustable ear loops for better fitting. About using Febreze sheet as filter, is it safe to breathe in all the chemical in the sheet? I am not sure about that.
