How do you feel about wearing a mask while at a Disney Park?

  • If wearing a mask means the parks can open sooner, I'll wear one. I just want to be able to go!

  • Wearing masks would detract from the Disney experience I love so much! I won't go if I have to mask

Just curious - For those who are voting yes, have you worn a mask for an extended period of time while working or in the heat? I'm only asking because I have recently had to start wearing a mask at work and I pour sweat while working in the a/c. I also find it hard to breathe and it fogs up my glasses. While I will continue to wear it at work (because it's the law or whatever), I will not go to Disney in the 100 degree summers with 90% humidity and wear one there.
To answer your question, no, they haven't. Everyone who is claiming that they will be perfectly fine in 90+ with humidity walking an average of 12 miles on a hot day at DW is flat out kidding themselves. It's just not happening. Will they try? Sure. But they will QUICKLY find out just how miserable of an experience it is. People deferring to Shanghai are hilarious. These citizens are far less obese than this country, coupled with the fact that they have been living like this for nearly 2 decades. I can't laugh any harder at those who actually believe they and their families will have a day of bliss under these conditions. Kids complain enough about how hot it is without masks let alone with them.

That’s our story exactly. We go in summer because of school and masks covering nose and mouth in that heat/humidity is not doable for us. Haven’t yet canceled either but will as soon as it’s confirmed. We usually split our trips between wdw and our place on the beach on gulf coast so instead we’ll just stay at beach. Thinking that will be better than a lesser experience at wdw.

Same here - booked for July 14 , but playing the waiting game - DS9 on low end of the spectrum with sensory issues and hard for him to wear the mask ( from A mental aspect)

DD14 doesn't want to go to Wdw if we have to wear masks - Disney is a place for us ( PRE- covid as well, obviously) to escape everyday life - a trip with masks would just be a constant reminder of how our world has been turned upside down in a matter of a few months

I’ll wear one if I have to, but I do think they will have a lot more problems with heat stroke. Between rebreathing CO2 and people drinking less because they have to remove the mask to do so. A nurse friend said last night that you really shouldn’t wear a mask longer than 20 minutes without a break or you run the risk of CO2 buildup. I know I get terribly winded if I do anything physical while wearing a mask for more than a few minutes.

I'm actually more likely to book if masks are required. Obviously they are not magic, and mostly function as a way of keeping your cooties to yourself, but we want to go have some fun. Masks are not joyful, but my husband and son have to wear them all day anyway, and I find that I don't really notice much discomfort after the first 20 minutes or so. I'm in the process of canceling/rescheduling an expensive and long anticipated trip to the UK that seems to have really become untenable. We'd like to do something that we think we can keep relatively low risk to ourselves and others.

Now, we're a party of adults under 65, and we think it's quite possible we've been exposed already (and were either asymptomatic or it was the mostly digestive mystery bug that went around the house in March), but Disney is one of a handful of destinations that we trust to be cautious in managing risk. So, if it otherwise works out, I'll pack a bunch of masks and go. If we go we will be driving straight through from Philadelphia on the way down (probably one stop on the way back), eating only drivethrough until we get there. When we get there, we will eat/stay only at Disney and/or other large entities we trust to take it seriously. This is risk management, not riskless, but is what we personally are comfortable with.

All the excuses.. they just keep on a coming , like people havnt been wearing masks in Disneyland Shanghai before this, and have managed perfectly fine on the rides.

I don't think there are excuses - more like concerns

From CDC guidelines : ( the first line very important, and doesn't even mention heat and humidity, just time )

<< According to information from the CDC, the level of CO2 that builds up inside the mask is mostly tolerable to people who don’t wear the mask for an extended period of time. >>> While a sensitivity to CO2 makes wearing the mask more uncomfortable, it is unlikely to cause hypercapnia when occasionally wearing it out in public.

However, face masks are not necessary in every setting. The CDC does not recommend wearing face coverings while driving, especially if you’re alone in the car.

“A mask is also not necessary if you are going for a jog in your neighborhood or working out at home,” Gutierrez said.

If you are working out in a public setting and want to wear a face mask, it is recommended to check with your physician first.

Wearing a mask during a workout decreases air flow to your lungs, which makes exercising more difficult — even for people who are regularly working out and don’t suffer from any underlying health conditions.

Experts suggested to watch out for symptoms including lightheadedness, tingling and shortness of breath.

I feel that if you really want to go to Disney, you will wear a mask. Lets be honest, there are those who won't go in the summer because of the heat anyway. Now if you don't want to wear a mask in the heat, go another time. I love Disney and if they say mask I will happily wear a mask. We go 3 times a year, one of those times is in August - We sweat like crazy normally so a mask really won't make me sweat that much more. As for glasses fogging up, I wear glasses and find if the mask fits tightly over the nose, I never fog up!

I work in healthcare and have to wear a mask all day, everyday. I also wear a mask anywhere except for when I am at home. I don't have any issues with wearing a mask in such a large place, because I am keeping in mind some people don't or won't follow social distancing.

Gives new perspective on the CMs who dance around in character costumes every day in the Florida heat. My DD did this for 10 years at Universal. TRULY a thankless job.
Yes! It also makes me wonder how they disinfect the heads of those costumes? I mean, all this talk of viral load just from speaking or breathing heavily- it would just sit on the inside of the head part of the costume. EWWWW!

I posted this on the other thread that closed: Disney can do/require whatever they please. They are a private business. People on this thread are talking as if Disney is setting policy for the entire United States. I think it’s smart given the current climate to require masks/face coverings of all guests. If you can’t comply with that requirement then don’t go. It’s pretty simple.

Not sure who you’re referring to, but everyone on this thread has been pretty straightforward that if masks were required we wouldn‘t go. Obviously Disney can set whatever policy they choose, no one is arguing that.

It actually is a simple choice, isn't it? A CHOICE. If you don't feel you can or will or want to wear a mask, then don't go yet. The day will return eventually, in a future 'phase' of reopening, when masks will no longer be needed for health reasons.

I truly wonder how far Disney requirements will go, too. A lot of the chatter is around wearing a mask in the parks. But will they also require it at the resorts? In some ways, people are likely to be in closer proximity and more in need of masks at the hotels than the parks even. It probably depends on where they stop the room capacity levels at the hotels.

I don't know the details of how it all works, but I would think this would be easier. Hotels are considered necessary businesses and (many) have been operating this entire time. At least there are established examples in place to reference. Theme parks? I can't even imaging trying to figure out the best thing to open those.

Agreed. I know many people have been scoffing at it, but I still think the Shanghai Disneyland opening is getting a ton of attention from Disney execs. It's not exactly an apples to apples comparison, but there certainly are lessons WDW and DL will take from Shanghai's theme park experiences. Some of the photos from Shanghai Disneyland have been a bit strange looking - just a handful of people on Tron, and lines spread way out for attractions - and that's at an estimated 10%-15% at this time. Could definitely see limited numbers like that to start with coming to the US parks.

I voted "won't go", but that's only a little bit about the mask itself, and more about what the need for a mask likely represents in terms of where we're at with the virus and what other restrictions or limitations are likely to be in place. We only go to Disney every 3-5 years or so, and I'd rather wait longer in order to have a fuller experience.
This is the part that confuses me the most. Phase 2 in Florida calls for theme parks to be re-opened in limited capacity with extreme social distancing. The governor said that each phase will probably run its' course for 3 weeks prior to moving on to the next one, barring we don't see a sudden spike in contracted cases of COVID. With that being said, phase 3 calls for "regular operations" with very limited social distancing. Therefore, under this guideline from the state, the park in August shouldn't have to enforce all of these regulations. If that's the case, and the rest of the state won't be enforcing these standards, why would Disney stand alone and continue to defer to standards like masks, etc? I'm genuinely just confused by it. Doesn't add up.

After about 50% (~100) more votes in the past day or two, the poll still stands at nearly dead on 50/50.

Don’t see a need to be argumentative. If people want to go with a mask, then so be it. If people will rather stay home, then so be it. As long as one’s decision does not possibly negatively affect others, let them be.

Don't get caught up on planned phase openings, they are only plans not laws...they can go out the window if things get much better or worse. If it is proven masks are not needed, you can be sure Disney will adjust.

Mixed feelings. I completely understand why they are important and have been wearing them when I have been out in public and will continue to do so until it is deemed no longer necessary by professionals, however wearing them in the parks in the high humidity does not seem appealing, nor picture-friendly either. It can also be hard for people with disabilities and children to wear them, or people with breathing problems such as severe asthma. It's a slippery slope. I will lay-low and will most likely avoid the parks until face masks are no longer needed.
