Thoughts on Lowball Offer

Well I had already bought 110 points for a vac I was suppose to use in March and have half paid for my nov trip when all this corona hit. But I may have some money coming back from refunded plane tickets and I have a sandals trip that paid for I may cancel. This may be the year I have all the cash saved up from not taking vac😊

It was the cost of renting points that led me to buying my own contract.

I’m feeling in a similar boat, we got refund from a trip we were supposed leave for next week. Now that universal opened up I was considering going (my mom already bought her room and plane tickets) except I think I would rather use the cash towards another contract and reward us all in the fall, it’s a head and heart choice at this point. And I’m also pregnant so a June trip would basically be a lot more fun for everyone but me.

I’m considering making an offer on a contract with a diff UY than my other one but the 2019 points aren’t banked yet and will expire in a couple months. The broker said they will ask for an exception for them to be banked, is that even possible?

I just don’t feel like I could rent from someone if I was waiting to buy, it feels like I would be tossing money in to the wind. Like I have already done for 10 years. Ha we’ve had so much fun though so it’s totally worth 😆
I wouldn't count on an exception. Those are throw away points which is too bad. The owner has to call DVC, not the broker. Good luck!

I just placed a fair offer on a stripped contract AKL 160 for $77 plus closing. The equivalent for a loaded 2019 and 2020 points is $98 per point. It may look low, but the bottom line comes down to 13K either way (renting 320 points). Counter $103. Next.

Edit: $4160 MORE apples to apples not happening!

I’ve noticed a number of stripped AKL and SSR contacts for late use years that either have points coming in 2021 or no points until 2022 that are asking a solid premium of $115+ per point. Just silliness.

I also put in an offer for AKL 160 but it still had a little over 100pt for 2020. I started at $90 but they only went down to $102. (Listed at $105.) I had to let it go since it wasn’t the exact use year I wanted but could have worked.
Glad to hear you walked away because I was kind of wondering if I should have just been happy with $102.

Is it worth even countering with the seller when the broker says the “best they’ll do is?” Or should I just let it go?

it depends on the agent and broker your dealing with. I've had some fight for us and go back and forth a lot. Other times they don't really say anything and the convo is done. Which surprises me because don't they work off of commission?

I am in the process of buying a contract and the 2019 points were not banked, so I made it contingent on my offer. I knew it would be close to banking deadline

Sellers did it once we agreed on price and the contract was written with them banked.

I would always always always counter. It's fundamentally different for a seller to actually turn down your offer than it is to say that they'd reject a hypothetical offer at that price. All you need is one bluffing seller and you've got yourself a deal!

Not sure if it counts as 'lowballing', but we've been looking for a 100 point Poly contract and saw one earlier today, no points until December 2021, which is fine by us. It was listed at $148 per point and we have offered $138, this is potentially our first resale contract, and I am certain it won't be accepted and was a bit embarrassed at first, but after reading loads of this thread, I thought why not! Worst case scenario is rejection, we're in no rush.

Originally I offered 93 and after they countered with 105$ I said “I am willing to pay 97” if they change their mind on AKL the broker said he thinks they will keep it If it doesn’t get 105. So 🤷‍♀️

You might never hear from them again. If not, oh well. You're right where you are right now.

On the other hand, you might get an e-mail in a couple of days that says "how about $101?" at which point you know you've got a deal at $99.

Nobody who is offering to sell their contract wants to keep it.
