Who here has walked away from social media?

I love FB to keep up with distant friends and family, but I think I am done. I am not interested in moving over to Parler or anything, I think I'm just done.
Maybe I just delete everyone except the closest friends and family, and eliminate "acquaintances?"

What strategy have you taken, if you made this move?

**I'm still good with twitter for getting news, and I like message boards like this for general stuff. I just don't need to know every detail of people's lives and especially their political info right now. I think we'd all be better off without it.

I also use FB to keep in contact with people. I am trying very hard to ignore political and controversial posts. I've stopped looking at comments under news articles as they have become simple a slug fest between political parties.

30 day pause if the rhetoric gets to be too frequent, block them altogether if it won't go away. If the FB post I don't like is a forward from someone I don't know I block THAT person. It's amazing how quickly that cleans up your FB feed.

I really only have IG. I like it. It’s mostly pictures and not political. Or the people i follow aren’t political.

I do have Twitter but use it to follow Disney accounts, sports local news and major news. I don’t have anyone I know on there and I don’t interact with anyone. It’s a great way to keep up with things happening in my area, especially during the pandemic.

I got rid of FB 8 years ago. No regrets.

I do the hide, snooze, then remove thing. I give folks a chance. It's just sad that people I have known for so long now are only capable of talking about certain things. And those things, I don't think I can reconcile with them, frankly.

I don't know how we got to where we are, but I hate it. When someone says something dangerous, and all they have is an echo chamber... ugh.

I don't do Facebook, so it's been incredibly easy to walk away from it. My main aversion to it was knowing people who became consumed with it to Gollumesque proportions. If it wasn't interpersonal drama, it was the games. Mafia Wars, Farmville.... Get hooked on Facebook, and sit there planting imaginary crops all day with your Gangster farmer friends who are just going to put a hit out on you over some stupid digital corn.

I have a Twitter account but have barely used it.
I have an Instagram account, haven't posted in forever, but I still view posts/feeds on it. The only social media outlet I really like, though I remain fairly anonymous on there.

Have you seen The Social Dilemma on Netflix? It explains a lot. "If you don't know what is being sold, it is probably you".
I will agree though, especially since the COVID shutdown, "Polarizing" doesn't begin to describe...

I have considered pulling the plug on Facebook so many times...but I play a stupid game that is linked to my account and requires "friends" so if I close my FB account, the game goes away and I am not ready to say good bye to my game. It's pathetic. I have so many irl friends on continual 30-day "breaks" because they can't stay away from their political bs...it's so exhausting. It's on both sides of the spectrum and they are just exhausting.

I quit Facebook in 2010-ish and didn’t look back...until I moved to a new town and wanted to keep up with a couple local news groups. So I have a profile with no picture, no bio, and no friends. It’s worked well to get the information I want without engaging. I use Instagram for pictures and close friends, and Twitter under a professional profile for work. So everything I use has a very specific purpose. I don’t know if it cuts down on total time spent on social media, but it does eliminate a lot of the stress and angst from comparison, frustrating posts, and feeling like my behavior is being manipulated.
