No issues from NZ - I'm regularly switching between WDW and DL and I always get the US site.

I spend time on reddit/talesfromthefrontdesk (a subforum where hotel employees share work stories). The #2 thing I've learnt from there is if you ask (and you're pleasant - nasty guests get nowhere) they'll be more than happy to upgrade IF they've got availability. They don't find it awkward...
