I think we're overthinking things nowadays.

Scenario 1:

Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack.

1957 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.

2011 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.

Scenario 2:

Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.

1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.

2011 - Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it.

Scenario 3:

Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students.

1957 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.

2011 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The family gets extra money (SSI) from the government because Jeffrey has a disability.

Scenario 4:

Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.

1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman.

2011 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse, Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist.

Scenario 5:

Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.

1957 - Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock.

2011 - The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons.

Scenario 6:

Pedro fails high school English.

1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college.

2011 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English is then banned from core curriculum. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario 7:

Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.

1957 - Ants die.

2011 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The FBI investigates his parents - and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

Scenario 8:

Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.

1957 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.

2011 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.

That's good:thumbsup2

When my son was in elementary school I used to tell him to not draw fighting scenes in his school artwork because I was afraid they would tag him and emotionally disturbed and I won't let him wear his shirts with air-soft guns on them because I'm not sure where the schools stand on that these days

You forgot the part where the environmental activists protest the cruelty against animals

You forgot the part where Johnny's parents sue the board of education for the tripping hazard caused by the asphalt on the playground.

DS18 DID get called into the office for a picture he drew with aliens dropping bombs out of the sky on buildings :sad2::sad2: He was a 10 year old boy and into science fiction at the time. Thankfully common sense prevailed when he showed them the book cover he was trying to copy.

In 1st grade he was out sick one day. He missed an assignment where they had to color a paper doll thing of themselves--so he did exactly that, colored the paperdoll peach, put a little black dot, um, between his legs. His teacher called me into school to tell me how inappropriate that was, blah, blah, blah. I was biting the inside of my cheek the whole time trying not to laugh. It was hysterical. He was 6 years old for crying out loud and was following the directions, just a little too literally. A couple years later this teacher's boys were running laps around the church during Mass-I sure wanted to let her know how inappropriate that was :lmao:.

wow! that was interesting to read! how true all this was. How far out of hand things have gotten, and how much things get blown out of proportion. Quite sad.

That Johnny sure does cause a lot of trouble.
He should be institutionalized.

so funny, but so true! (especially since i was born in 1957...)

yep.

back in the day "things" were so different

as kids we'd go (wait for it...) OUTSIDE to play - for hours - with no cel phones.

how DID we survive??!!

My boys do this now. They understand that there's a time for XBox Live and there's a time for going outdoors to play and enjoy life.

Yes, nothing ever bad happened in 1957.. everything was rainbows and unicorns. The reason a lot of us are overprotective of our children is because of what happened to either ourselves or people we know.

1957 Friendly Man befriends Johnnie, trusting parents are happy that he has found a nice man to share his hobby. Johnnie goes through years of torture, and then years of depression, and then ends up killing himself, his parents never forgive themselves.

2011 Wary parents keep Johnnie away from Friendly Man and call Police. Police arrest Friendly Man when they see he is on probation and has not registered his new residence with Megan's Law.

Let me guess, you'd sue Starbucks for not warning you the coffee you just bought was hot.

True.

...and in 1957 Johnnie's Dad goes out on weekends with his buddies. They drink beer, wear long robes and hoods, and burn crosses on people's front lawns. What a blast!

Thank you for posting this. I was getting a little concerned that nobody forwarded it to me this week.

I'm angry with Starbucks because their straws are labeled not to use in hot beverages. :lmao:

So you're under the impression that in 2011 there is no racism? :confused3

Of course there is. When I get passed over for a job because of Affirmative Action, that is blatant racism under the protection of the government.

I like the gun piece at the beginning. I can remember my brother hunting before school and having the rifle in the gun rack of his truck. No problem. Now I live in a very rural area. When my daughter was in high school, every fall we got a note reminding students where snowmobile parking was and reminding those that hunt before school that they must return their weapons to their house or park off-campus. Locking them up in the truck of the car was not acceptable and you would be expelled for having a weapon on campus.

Not to say 1957 was perfect. It definitely was not. But I think that we have gone a bit overboard with somethings. When my daughter was in fifth grade, the class was doing a project that involved decorating their classroom. Part of the decorating required that the students draw pictures of various businesses to put up on the wall. My daughter drew a tattoo and body piercing parlor. It was destroyed by the teacher, which almost destroyed her. I was called in about her inappropriate drawing. By then I was furious because she was quite upset. The business she drew was real and was owned by her half sister and brother in law. She felt like her teacher was saying her family was evil because of what her sister does for a living. She's 20 now and well over it but I still remember how hurt she was just because that teacher was so offended by the concept of people getting pierced or tattooed.
