Alaska, meh

I totally agree. I think it's a beautiful part of the country (I've been as far north as Vancouver and loved it) but can't get my brain to combine 'cruise' and 'alaska'.

I'm happy doing the caribbean, thank you very much.

We just got back from an Alaska cruise a week ago. It was always some place I wanted to go but DW really had no interest. The prerequisite was a ship with a Casino...lol.

I hate to speak for my DW but I can only say that it was incredible and beyond our wildest dreams. We enjoyed it so much we can't wait to go again....we'd even like to drive and see the interior. The only other cruising I have done is on Disney. While I like the Disney ship better.....IMHO Alaska destroys any itinerary out of Port Canaveral. All I would say is give it a chance.

Chris

You can speak for me, I feel the same!

Honestly, this was one of those things I did for Chris. I am as far from an outdoors girl as you can get, HATE cold and anything remotely winter (which really sucks living in Canada!!). I was a TA and sold Alaska cruises to clients and seriously thought they were crazy! This was my 8th cruise, the previous 7 all Caribbean, I had no desire to cruise anywhere but!

I wouldn't say he brought me kicking and screaming but I wasn't as excited as I could have been for sure. It changed for me the first morning we woke in Ketchikan, I opened the curtains and stepped on the balcony into paradise. The mountains, the scenery, the peaceful calm....it was unlike anything I ever saw in my life. It was so nice to stroll the shops in port without anyone begging for money or wanting to braid my hair!!!

The rest of the cruise was more awe inspring moments, one after another.
I can't wait to go back and see more, I fell in love with Alaska. And truly it wasn't cold!

And yes, for those wondering....I did tell Slapwhitey he was right (a rare occasion -- that he was right!). It was the most amazing place I had ever seen.

I too have no real desire to cruise Alaska, if only because I LIVE here!:rotfl:

I have thought about taking an AK cruise, but I have enjoyed the scenery for the last 36 years....been there done that!

It can get a little chilly during the summer, but you won't be cruising in a blizzard! Southeast AK is a rainforest for the most part, so it's more like Washington than the interior of AK. I'm excited for those of you that haven't been up here, I've heard such wonderful things about the Disney cruises (have our first ever booked in March), and it sounds like a great combination....one of the most beautiful places in the world combined with a wonderful cruise experience! Now if they would only start in Seward...I'd do it in a heartbeat. Not having to spend big bucks to fly out of state would be heaven!!!

Good luck getting those rooms to Alaska! You won't regret coming up here if you love unspoiled wilderness and wildlife!

I have to hijack and say that if it were not for WDW, I would never give Florida another thought.

Ha! That's a really good point! I wouldn't go to Florida except to WDW and to get on a cruise ship. Well, I do want to go to Key West someday, so I guess that's an exception.

I did go on an Alaskan cruise in 2000. It really was a great vacation. Of course it wasn't the same as a Caribbean cruise, but it was nice in its own way. Being so close to the glaciers and watching them break off into the sea was really cool. There is such a neat atmosphere of "frontier" there that is hard to explain. I would love to go back with DH someday since we hadn't even met when I took this cruise.

We did an Alaska Cruise in May which is why I didn't go on podcast cruise 1.0. All the while we were hearing about the wonderful exploits with the podcast team on PC 1.0, I kept telling myself, Alaska is just a few days away.

I'm "meh" about Alaska too. I was part of a huge family cruise in July, 2008 and it didn't thrill me all that much. It was great to have a large group of us (20) all together but I think I would have enjoyed a warmer climate better. It was my first (and only) cruise so I think I was just expecting to be out on the poop deck in my bathing suit soaking up the sun! Not so much in Alaska - come to think of it, there was quite a bit of rain. Although the sights were pretty and I did some fun excursions (dog sledding, zip lining, glacier sight seeing), I don't plan to do another Alaskan Cruise. Honestly, I enjoyed the couple of days prior to the cruise in Seattle more than the cruise itself. But to each his own!

I couldn't agree more! After my first Alaska cruise and land trip in 2007, I couldn't wait to go back. I did another northbound cruise + land trip in 2008, then a roundtrip out of Seattle on the Golden Princess last May because the prices were amazingly low. I hope to go back in 2011, but I'm not interested in cruising there with DCL.

I'd LOVE to see the northern lights. Other than that, I have about as much interest in Alaska as I do in North Dakota (not much).

You are unlikely to see the Northern Lights on an Alaskan cruise. You need DARK, starless nights, and you need to be pretty far north - like Fairbanks.
