Christmas Dishes and Glassware

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I've decided to get rid of the glassware but keep the dishes for now. I'm also going to try to use them more during the season even if it's just for Sunday dinner. I'll see how that goes and reconsider next year. Enjoy your holidays and dinnerware!

Our first married Xmas, my MIL got us two mugs and two plates. I thought it was nice of her. I had NO IDEA she would get some of it for us every year. I'd say " oh this is great- I think we have enough now" but we have Serving bowls, salt/ pepper etc. it's so much work to get it all out.

Last year for the first time, we didn't get it out. And the earth did not stop spinning! The holidays were stressful last year and I cut way back on decorating. It was AMAZING!

I have Christmas china that I use from Thanksgiving to January- every night. Don't take it out for only a couple evenings during Christmas. I take my everyday dishes/glassware out of the cabinets and replace it with the Christmas set. Life is short - enjoy it as much as possible. :)

They make me happy! Some years they stay displayed in my small China cabinet, other years used.
It's actually more work to unbox them and display ( all else has to get wrapped and moved). Mine is more of a Winter scene so they can used T DAY thru FEb is I desired.

Pretty nice gift from a student. The piece you described now goes for about $70+ if you can find it. The serving platter I got back in 2003 now runs almost $200. :scared1:
....it was a Catholic elementary school and EVERY SINGLE CHILD gave me a Christmas gift that year - some of them were really spectacular!

Seeing some of the beautiful holiday china sets pictured in this thread is making me want to buy a set of Christmas dishes of my own!! :)

I have china, but not any for the holidays (I like the Thanksgiving ones too!). I have my own set of Johanne Haviland china, plus my Mom's, and I have a set of hand painted china that belonged to my grandmother. I just need a china cabinet. I had a good place to put one, but DH bought a gun safe and put it in that spot. :(

I have Christmas dishes - a huge set including the casserole dishes. I love them and use them constantly from Thanksgiving until New Years. I was at an estate sale last year and came across more of the plates and bought them. My husband just rolled his eyes when I got home with them.
It's Pfaltzgraff Winterberry.

I told my kids that they will inherit them someday because I'm never getting rid of them. There are enough for them to actually divide everything up and they'd still have plenty each. LOL

Oh and they are stored in 3 tubs in the basement carefully wrapped and unwrapped every year. We don't have space for them in the kitchen. I wish I did!

IMG_5778.jpg At our house the Christmas dishes are used for the whole month of December. It is such a festive build up to the big day. On Christmas day they are the centerpiece on the christmas table, which is set that day with linens, my Mom's silverware and fresh greens & candles.

My Christmas dishes are by Portmeirion and are The Night Before Christmas, each piece is a different painted image that corresponds to a line in the poem.

Glad to hear of the generosity at that parochial school, and how it reflects on the families who clearly appreciate everything the staff does! :goodvibes

OP, this is a company that purchases tableware, then resells it to people who are looking for replacement pieces.

http://www.replacements.com/misc/selltous.htm

I've never bought or sold with this company and I don't know how much they'd be willing to pay, but it might be worth looking into if you decide you want to unload your holiday dishes. At the very least, you might be able to help someone find that piece they've been looking for.

To the best of my knowledge, that firm gets it's inventory from wholesalers and tabletop specialists, but doesn't buy from individuals. That stated, they are definitely the "go-to" entity if you are looking for an easy way to obtain or replace specfic china/crystal/flatware pieces, since they have a massive inventory, with real-time updated availability info.

My recommendation is if you are looking for particular piece, check Replacements first and see if they have what you are looking for in stock and what they have it priced at. But then check Ebay; because you can often find the same item(s) you are seeking being sold by individuals, which is sometimes priced below what Replacements is selling it for.
