Class of 2021 Parents

Everything I posted about the other day of course is not happening. SAT and the makeup date cancelled. April ACT date postponed to June. Lifeguarding recert not happening anywhere. All restaurants, gyms and movie theaters in the state are closing as of 5 p.m. tonight. Everyone is working from home. My high schooler is a runner, went out today and I think is doing some AP World homework right now but otherwise he'll be happy on YouTube until the world ends. My college student just came back from a walk and is already bored and not happy to be home. His online classes don't start up for another two weeks. I am wondering how long until we all really drive each other crazy. DH and I already had a fight about work space. It won't be long before I will need tp, milk and eggs. I have a feeling we won't be going on our London vacation and don't know the details about the plane tickets we already bought. Kind of don't even want to look right now :(
Same. My kids run, Dd will continue, ds ran today only because he can only see friends outside with no contact. His friends went to one kid‘s house afterwards, I wouldn’t let him. They are used to at least one practice a day (both on 2 soccer teams too). DH works from home, dd23 works from home, ds21 internship is now work from home, Dd18 school from home, dd17 and ds17 school from home...

Restaurants, bars, gyms, theaters, casinos closed, 8 pm curfew. My ridiculously social kids are losing their minds. Online school starts tomorrow for the HS kids.

I did stock up on toilet paper, but over several weeks, and from different places (96 rolls just showed up from staples). However, I didn’t stock up on food, maybe I can trade.

I think they will have to add SAT dates/locations.

2nd year law student has had semester closed down and all to be done online.
Hoping for best, internships being pulled back.
Going to be interesting going forward.

DS is on spring break this week, and then will go to online classes for at least 2 weeks. After that, who knows, DD who is in her first year at UMASS Lowell will be home tonight. They're going to online classes for the rest of the semester. She told me that Harvard actually canceled their semester and refunded tuition. It would be awful to have been a senior getting ready to graduate from Harvard and then having it all canceled.

It seems bad to me, but I'm at least happy that it's DS's junior year, and not his senior year. Spring sports are on hold for now, not sure if they're going to cancel the season or not.

I'm sad for our junior students and the things that are missing now because of this Covid 19 outbreak. I can't even begin to to imagine what parents of seniors this year are going through. I am just happy right now that all of this is not affecting my dd senior year of high school and only her junior year of school.

She worked so hard this year to get into the state of Missouri state music competition. She made it with her flute solo and her choir solo, but that was all taken away when they cancelled the state competition. Then her winter guard season got cancelled as well. Now junior prom is looking like it is going to get cancelled. I literally just paid $160 dollars for alterations to her dress which we are supposed to pick up on Monday. I suppose if it is cancelled we have a dress for next year already. Three of our colleges visits were cancelled which I am hoping to visit in the summer. If not I guess we will have to apply without seeing them and then try to visit. What have all of your junior kids been missing out on?

My kids are missing out on their track season (dd17 is pretty good and always medals), club soccer (which we pad thousands for), and HS soccer spring league. All college visits are cancelled, including fun overnights at their siblings colleges. Junior formal is cancelled, still have the tags on ds’s suit. Ds is taking this the hardest so far, he’s a physical kid who needs to play. Parks are closed here, no pick up soccer or basketball. I wonder about things like honor society inductions, for their college applications, AP tests, SAT’s and ACT’s. They are also involved in peer leadership with their church, working with the confirmation class.

While I do feel bad for seniors, they are missing the end of high school and all the fun things that go along with that, I feel like Jr.'s are far worse of, academically anyway. By now, Sr.'s likely have next year figured out.

Jr. year is the most important academic year. At this point, our kids will not have as many SAT/ACT testing opportunities to improve their scores if they choose to. At this point, my DD can't even take the one test required to apply for colleges in the fall. Unable to properly prepare for AP exams. We are on block schedules here, so missing a month of classes is really missing two months.

We had 4 college tours scheduled - all canceled.

It's rough all around. Comp soccer - canceled. Comp water polo - canceled. Spring swim - canceled.

My DD has been shooting for a water polo scholarship and had coaching meetings set up, tournaments to show college coaches what she has - all canceled.

My kids just told me their guidance counselor only had the fronts of their AP class forms scanned before they closed the school, so they have to fill out the backs and get them signed by their teachers.

AP testing is going to be at home this year, they updated their website today. I did sign him up for a June ACT and planning to for SAT but wonder if those will happen. DS19 is officially online with college for the rest of the semester and now we need to go get the rest of the stuff from his dorm, luckily it's just an hour away. DH and I working from home, I did go out once this week for printer ink and some groceries. Paid way more for organic eggs than I ever would have. Will have to buy tp this week if there is any. We're going to get takeout one day this weekend for our sanity and a change of pace. It's so surreal how the world has shut down.

They are going to have to figure something out to get the testing kids need, or just waive it for this year. DS has a PSAT score from this year but was about to start the other testing on March 14. AP tests are only going to cover the first 75% of the year's curriculum and the website says colleges are on board with this plan and will give credit earned. Not ideal, but looks like most courses are only omitting 1-2 units from the tests. We are on a block schedule too. Luckily we got three college tours in before this all happened. I'm sure sports will be cancelled - DS' physical expires in May and I'm not sure at this point his appointment will happen (same for the several medical appts I have scheduled for April and May). I feel so lucky (and kind of selfish) that my older DS' graduation was last year and then this one (obviously) is next year, but feel bad for several of my niece and nephews who are graduating from HS and college this year.

My biggest concern for my DD is her IB classes. The test dates are etched in stone, thousands of students around the world take them. She's got plenty of online work to keep her progressing, so that's good. If she does well on the exams, they count for college credit at state schools. I think she has an AP class as well--AP and IB are considered to overlap, so you can't take, say, IB Psych and AP Psych.

Dance classes have been cancelled, but she's found some online tutorials. Luckily, we have a dance room with a barre and mirrors, so can practice her pointe skills. Cello lessons have been cancelled for the duration--her cello teacher is 5 months pregnant. All performances have been cancelled.

DD just got accepted into National Honor Society, but hasn't been inducted yet. Don't know when/if that will happen.

They're emailing about class selection for next year, but she says she's all set--IB is pretty rigid about what you take, and they get first dibs.

On a similar note, my older son is finishing community college and transferring to the State U. His classes are all online until the end of the school year, and luckily, he's already been accepted as a transfer. However, he's got a ton of issues--Asperger's, learning disabilities, anxiety, depression...--and he benefits a lot from repetition. We had hoped to get him up to the new campus a few times to get oriented, prior to his official orientation (he'll be living at home). But, that's not happening.

I can relate to this. DS only made our state's regional competition (he's hoping for all-state next year) and fortunately, it was in January. He has friends, though, that made all-state that I'm sure will be canceled next month. Winter drumline (and winter guard) was canceled after just 2 competitions of 5.

AP testing is going to be at home this year, they updated their website today.

Thanks for the heads-up on this. I was wondering how it was going to work.

DS won't be taking the ACT again, but I did see some exciting changes for 2020:

It just sucks on so many levels for juniors (seniors, too, but in a different way) like @mommy2allyandaveri said.

We have a college tour scheduled for April 10th (kids are supposed to be out for Good Friday), but if we happen to be back in school (doubtful), they'll probably change that to a school day since they've had all of these days off. If not, then I'm sure the college might cancel -- even though their students are off-campus the rest of the semester, their website says they're hoping to resume tours on 4/6. I purposely scheduled 4/10, though, so he could get a feel for what it's like during the school year. Nope, that ain't happening!

We did the same we were supposed to tour on 4/10 and then another one the following week as well. We actually already received word that it's cancelled as the school is on remote learning. We were touring Syracuse so with 10K cases in NY we aren't going anywhere for a while. My daughter is starting to stress SAT's (which 2 sessions already cancelled) as well as having to take the AP exams which she now feels she won't be as prepared. Then the looming threat of prom being cancelled is out there as well. They moved her spring break to this past week so online learning starts next week. Not sure how they will do a double lab and some of her other classes but they seem to be getting very creative.
As an aside, how are your kids doing with driving? My daughter is terrified (she has her permit only). We keep taking her out and it's not getting better. She did 6 hours with an instructor as well.
Good luck and hugs to all!

I had a reluctant driver, just keep practicing. My niece was the same way, my SIL didn’t push it, she’s now 21, no license, away at college with an internship in between every semester in another state (last one was TX, apparently not a lot of public transportation in TX).

My reluctant driver has been in several accidents and has totaled 3 vehicles (the 3rd by driving her boyfriend’s SUV on the highway in 3rd gear). Dd and ds couldn’t wait to drive, got their licenses 2 months ago. At least the roads are empty now!

Thank you! So far she has only damaged my husband's car. She scraped the side against a planter. My husband took her out today since it was so empty but she didn't want to go out any more today.

Now this is just crazy!

In response, the Regents approved a series of critical, short-term measures:
  • Suspending the letter grade requirement for A-G courses completed in winter/spring/summer 2020 for all students, including UC’s most recently admitted freshmen.
  • Suspending the standardized test requirement for students applying for fall 2021 freshman admission.

DS would have taken the SAT in school this week. It is all just so weird. He’s doing well with online school, mainly focusing on his 3 AP classes. The district said that no grades can go down from where they were on the last day of in person school. My son reports that there are many people who aren’t even logging in to the online platform because they consider the district policy a free pass for the semester if they were doing well. It’s so interesting to read on the CB how differently districts across the country are handling this! He registered for the half-credit English class he’ll take online this summer so that he can graduate this December. An entire semester in 3 weeks. Have fun with that!

Yesterday he received a great call from his soccer coach that he has been chosen as one of four players to represent his school on the Colorado Rapids Special Olympics Unified team. He’ll get to work out with the team, have a ‘signing day’, get a uniform kit, etc. The best part is that they’ll get to fly with the team to an away game and have that game experience. This is supposed to happen in late June but may be moved to September. Even if the away game doesn’t happen and all events are based in Denver, he’s pretty out of his mind right now to have been chosen for this opportunity! We were happy to get some good news! ⚽

We're kindof miffed about this. Sure, if your kids don't have college ambitions, then this make sense. How are the colleges going to differentiate though? Typically it's SOPH and JR year grades, plus SAT and AP exam scores, with an application essay or something like that. Some, but not many colleges take FROSH grades into consideration too. OK, well, that's now down to just SOPH and 1/2 JR year, with some AP scores? What about kids who are ACE'ing their AP classes in JR year? No AP GPA bump for that? That's not right.

Saw this today and it makes sense. I would certainly advise to take a LOA if my son was already going to school. This also seems like an opportunity though. If enrollment is down, wouldn't this make acceptance easier? I'd certainly be on-board for having my son get accepted and do on-line learning to start if it means he can get in to his preferred college. Still a year away - anything can happen for sure.
College admissions down for 2020.

My daughter is starting to get concerned that if so many take a gap year this year that it will affect her acceptance next year. Does anyone know how that usually would work? If someone is accepted and takes a gap year are they then automatically accepted for the following year? Would that then take away from how many they accept the next year? I know everything is speculated at this point but I was just curious how it normally worked.

I don’t think they hold a spot for them. I can’t imagine doing a gap year with unemployment high and travel prohibited. I can see more going to CC.
