COMPLETED - WDW's 50th, my 50th, and our 20th! October 2021 - Pictures & Dining Reviews - A Pre- and Post-Genie+ Trip Report

I had fun catching up with your trip this morning. I am :rotfl: at the idea Disney has a broccoli farm somewhere. They just might! It is prominent on menus and (unfortunately for me) not something I care for. I haven't been to Homecomin' in a while but am going in a few weeks for brunch and you have me very excited about it. Everything looked delicious! If that was the #2 meal, I am eager to find out what earned the #1 spot! So happy you loved Rise of the Resistance and found it worth the wait. I saw the other day the stand-by wait (this is with Lightning Lanes available for purchase) was 4 hours :scared: ... but I think the ride going down somewhat frequently compounded the issue.

Day 7: Magic Kingdom Day 2 and a Halloween Party! Part 2

Re-entering the Magic Kingdom before sunset, normal operating hours were still in effect. So, we hit a few attractions and made our way through some more shops (including on Main Street, where I found an awesome old-school type thermos from the Vault collection; it pairs perfectly with the similar style metal lunch box that we received with our D23 membership renewal this year!), bringing us eventually to our dinner ADR at Liberty Tree Tavern.

This would be our first ever meal at LTT and we were very much looking forward to it, especially me…I adore stuffing! Leading up to our trip, there was a bit of a scare though. Someone at Disney, no idea which department, decided to make a little update to LTT’s online menu, replacing the Patriot’s Platter with solely the special 50th Pennsylvania Pot Roast. When this happened a couple weeks before our departure to Orlando, I recall that the various Disney-fan boards were all a flurry on this topic! How could they replace all that the platter provided with just this single item?! How could they?! Well, they didn’t. Within a few days of that edit to the online menu, the error was rectified and everything else on the platter returned to the listing! Phew!

This evening, we ended up having a bit of a wait to be seated as they were a tad behind it seemed. We ended up grabbing an outside bench along the building’s porch and happily got off of our feet. Finally texted, we found ourselves seated on the first floor, but I couldn’t tell you in exactly which historically themed space. In any event, this “cozy colonial-style inn” proved to be not overly cozy at all, as they seemed to pack everyone in there; and as a result, the noise level was pretty high. No big deal whatsoever, just an observation that sort of goes against that “cozy” description.

For those not in the know, Liberty Tree Tavern serves an all-you-care-to-enjoy meal. You get a salad (mixed greens with a house-made dressing), the famed Patriot’s Platter (which consisted of roast turkey breast, ‘Pennsylvania’ pot roast, oven-roasted pork, mashed potatoes, herb stuffing, house-made macaroni and cheese, and seasonal vegetables…and they weren’t broccoli this time!!!), and finally, for dessert, their “Oooey Gooey Toffee Cake” (vanilla toffee cake with chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream):

626876

626877

626879

To drink, our daughter simply requested a Sprite, but my wife and I both ordered a Spirit of ’76 Cider Shandy (Boston lager topped with crisp apple hard cider) …and it was fabulous! Sweet, tart, and full of shandi-rrific flavor!!!

639109

The food? It was pretty darn good. Hearty. Savory. Flavorful. And very filling! I’ll be honest though, I am not sure that any spices except salt and pepper were used, heh! The salad had a decent crispness for a “mixed greens” salad and the dressing was a nice vinaigrette. The “plate ‘o meat” included all three types of protein allowing their associated sauces or gravies to intermingle somewhat, but in a good way! All of the meats were moist for the most part and tasty. The mashed potatoes were thick and creamy, and the green beans were ok, but I really prefer them with a balsamic vinegar drizzle on top for some added flavor. The mac and cheese? Honestly, I cannot recall. I guess the only sort of miss was the dessert. The two (maybe there were three) toffee cakes were a bit dry, but that was assisted by the melting ice cream on top. Still, not one of my favorite desserts on this trip.

Exiting LTT, we happened to time it perfectly for that evening’s fireworks show. While we obviously couldn’t view any of the projections on the castle from our vantage point in Liberty Square, we were certainly in a great spot for the overhead explosions of light! Way better than when we stood outside of Skipper Canteen the previous Magic Kingdom day.

639111

639112

Time for BOO BASH! At the appointed time, we made our way over to Tortuga Tavern in Adventureland to show our proof of tickets (I had physical printouts in addition to our Magic Bands and My Disney Experience…you just never know when the tech will fail!). The CMs scanned our proof and gave us our wristbands and our trick or treat bags. Off to the candy hunt!

639113

Not to be a downer, but our initial impression of the event was not great. In previous years, we’ve enjoyed Halloween after-hours parties at both the Magic Kingdom and in Disneyland, and loved them all. While the number of guests in the park was obviously lessened for the event, we were struck by a couple major differences this time out. First, the ambiance. The music being played over the exterior speakers throughout the park just wasn’t “Halloween-y” if that makes sense. I mean, there was music being played all over the place, but for the life of me I don’t recall any of it being Halloween tunes. If it was, it wasn’t obvious to me; plus, unlike parties past, I don’t recall any scary sound effects anywhere. Now, there was a Halloween cavalcade (perhaps a few) during the event (we only saw one), where they played Halloween music and sound effects, but it seemed that this was it. I will say though that I love to see that dragon come out!

626880

The other thing that we noticed was that the trick or treat “trails” were not trails at all; rather, they were more stations. At past events, we would hit legitimate treat trails, with several (maybe 4 or 5) separate treat stations within each one handing out candy or what not. Here, each location offered only one station; except for maybe one location that had two. I mean, the CMs were being pretty generous with the hand-outs (not super generous), but the minimal amount of stations was striking in comparison, especially given the ticket price of the event and the reduced number of hours. Yes, it included unlimited bottled sodas or water, plus select frozen novelties, and the lines for most attractions were short-ish, but for us the real fun of this event is the trick or treating for guests of all ages.

But all was not lost! As the seconds ticked towards midnight and the end of the Boo Bash was nearly at hand, we found ourselves in Adventureland. Having hit all of the trick or treat stations on the map, save one, we tried to make it over to the Enchanted Tiki Room for one final take. I should note that our respective candy bags at this point were only about a third of the way full.

As we approached the Tiki Room, we confirmed with the CM at the entrance that it wasn’t too late. She beckoned us pass and we entered the building as the final guests, just the three of us. Walking inside, we came upon a small group of maybe 5 or 6 CMs, hunkering around a set of treat barrels, talking amongst themselves, laughing and having a festive time. They greeted us very warmly and told us to come on in! We each got a decent handful…and then the question came from one of them, “Is that all you want?” Huh?!

“Is that all you want? Would you like more,” one of them asked us. Puzzled, I must have given them an obviously confused look; at which point, they told us that they had to give out whatever they had poured into the barrels, otherwise it had to be thrown away. A manager then walked by, helping the CMs fill our three bags. Seeing that there was still candy to be given, she grabbed a nearby empty event bag and filled it up too! We now had four nearly filled bags of candy! What a great way to end the day!

Day 8: Animal Kingdom Day 2 & the 4th Best Meal - Part 1

Up and out early yet again, today would be our second and final visit to Animal Kingdom. But, before arriving there, we had food on our minds…at one of our absolute favorite breakfast locations on property…Boma at the Animal Kingdom Lodge! And, no, while it was outstanding as usual, this was not the aforementioned 4th Best Meal of our trip…that comes tonight!

If memory serves, not too long before our trip, Boma fully reinstated their full self-service buffet. Originally, when I made our dining ADRs, it was excluded because either its re-opening hadn’t been officially announced yet or it wasn’t offering the full buffet experience again…I cannot clearly remember. In any event, when it was eventually announced that it would be returned to its former glory, I simply had to get up early (we are on the west coast after all) to try and snag an ADR for today; which I did!

Driving up to the Lodge, we were of course stopped at the guard gate, whereby we notified the security officer that we had an ADR at Boma. Checking his tablet, we provided our name and time, but he replied that we were not on the list. Very much surprised, I pulled out my phone, accessed My Disney Experience, called up our plans, and showed him proof of our reservation. Acknowledging it, he bid us pass. Phew!

Finally, after checking in at Boma, we were seated very quickly. Having a 7:30am ADR proved fortunate in that the restaurant wasn’t quite hopping yet, meaning that the buffet line wasn’t long whatsoever and moved rather well. Plus, the amazing POG juice (properly served in a glass sans ice, unlike at Kona Island at the Poly previously) was presented to our table without any delays:

627521

The buffet was everything that we remembered and loved! A great variety of selections, including my two personal favorites…the bobotie and the fried sweet plantains! I fully admit that I may have gone a tad overboard with the plantains…but they were SO good…and I cannot help it if some stuck together when I served myself, right?! And as an added treat, my wife and I shared the Kenyan press pot coffee, which was excellent.

OK! Off to Animal Kingdom! Interestingly, having arrived later this morning versus our first Animal Kingdom day, we found ourselves parked closer to the entrance. The far section of the massive lot, where we parked previously, was already full, so they were directing us into a large section adjacent to it, yet nearer to the front. Fine with us!

Into the park, we started off with the Kilimanjaro Safari and the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail, where we saw some amazing creatures who just wanted to relax:

627527

627528

I should note, that it was a very hot day today and as you can see in the first gorilla image above, some of them had enough of it! And the second gorilla image…well, as the Docent informed us, apparently, we arrived on “Blanket Day” for some of the gorillas. Staff lay out some blankets within their habitats ahead of time and as you can see this guy really appreciated his.

And I did mention that it was hot, right?! Yeah, it really was. So, as lunch time approached, actually still quite satiated from our Boma breakfast, we chose to grab some frozen goodness at Drinkwallah, grabbing a table and chairs in the nearby shaded area along the river. Now, I don’t know where the miscommunication was when placing our order, but the CM presented our daughter’s frozen Fanta Blue Raspberry in a Lion King novelty cup, which we didn’t ask for. Well, similar to the Boo Bash candy deluge, since they already poured it out, they had to give it to us…at the lower price of course.

Relaxing in the shady space behind Drinkwallah, we enjoyed our ice-cold beverages and rested our already achy feet. My wife and daughter decided that they wanted to hit Expedition Everest, which I simply cannot do due to the backwards portion giving me a headache. I chose to stay put, going back to grab a cold drink, and hold onto all of our belongings while they visited their friend, the Yeti!

Happily, while they were gone, I lucked out, as a performance of KiteTales started on the water and while not a straight on view, where I was seated offered a decent one. Now, if you are a Disney World fan, you may have heard as I had, that KiteTales had a few issues now and then. Mainly, sometimes the kites crashed, either into the stands or directly into the water. Well, one of those things happened to poor Simba on this day…

627529

Alas, lion down, lion down! He was just resting right? Maybe they could borrow one of the gorilla’s blankets for him?

My family happily returned from their Everest adventure and we then made our way back over to Pandora. Another cruise along the Na’vi River and one more trip on Flight of Passage, where the line, while still long, moved so incredibly fast. I want to say that we pretty much moved constantly from the exterior queue entrance all the way up to just before the laboratory and the floating blue dude. While traversing the exterior, I managed to grab a few more pictures of the amazing theming and scenery:

627530

627533

627531

Eventually entering the “ride room”, we found our family of three paired with a single rider in the fourth position. She was very nice and a bit apprehensive, as she started asking me some questions. It was her first ever ride on Flight of Passage. I told her that it was only our second, but assured her that it would be an incredible experience…and it was!

The remainder of the afternoon took us around the park some more, checking out additional animals and enjoying It’s Tough To Be a Bug (we lost ours in Disney California Adventure). Knowing that it was our second and final visit to Animal Kingdom, there was one more treat that I wanted to try, so we made our way over to Tamu Tamu Refreshments to grab a Simba Sunset to share:

627532

Consisting of pineapple Dole Whip with watermelon, strawberry, and coconut-flavored syrup drizzled upon it, I honestly hoped for something more. While the pineapple flavor was definitely there, the three flavors within the drizzle mixture seemed to sort of counter one another, creating a unique flavor that didn’t quite work for us. Not to mention, it was still really hot that afternoon, and the Sunset started melting away quickly as we sat in the shaded area behind the service counters. Overall, not a bad treat whatsoever, but we agreed that it should have been better.

With the park closing at 7pm this evening, physically spent and satisfied with our two Animal Kingdom days, we departed around 6pm, headed for Disney Springs…and our 4th Best Meal of the trip!

Day 8: Animal Kingdom Day 2 & the 4th Best Meal - Part 2

Onward to Disney Springs and our ADR at the Boathouse for dinner! While trip planning, I cannot tell you how many positive posts I read about the Boathouse, with many, many people claiming that it is the BEST meal in all of Disney Springs, if not Walt Disney World as a whole, so we simply had to try it during our vacation!

Since we ended up arriving quite early to the Springs for our 8pm ADR, we used the time to scope out the line for Gideon’s Bakehouse. The physical line outside of the building was a fraction of what we observed Saturday morning while here for brunch. Checking in with a Gideon’s employee who was holding a tablet, we inquired about the line and they replied that is was call backs for the virtual queue. Wanting very much to try Gideon’s, and having some time before our dinner reservation, we decided to get onto the virtual queue, hoping that we would be summoned and could complete our visit without conflicting with dinner.

Lo and behold, we were notified to get in the physical line pretty quickly! Queuing up along the front of the building, we chatted up those around us about previous experiences and recommendations. Finally, invited within their imposing double doors, we entered and were immediately blown away by the incredible ambiance and aromas that surrounded us!

627559

627560

627562

The wall décor, with all of the unusual portraits, was eerie, a little creepy, yet still very cool. The dark wood shelving, filled with old books and curios, portrayed an aura of foreboding (heh, see what I did there?), yet the scents of all of the baked goods enticed us to continue forward.

Ultimately, we ended up getting a slice of Red Velvet Cake for me, plus a cookie, and then two cookies each for my wife and daughter, plus a couple pins and a sticker. I must say that the visual imagery in front of the registers was phenomenal!

627563

How were they?! Well, since we still had dinner pending that evening, we had to wait to give any of it a taste. Jumping ahead to after dinner, back in our room at the Polynesian, with a pre-stop at Capt. Cook’s for some small cartons of milk, the slice of Red Velvet was amazing; sheer perfection! Moist and incredibly flavorful! The cookies? Wow! Just wow! Big and beautiful and every bite was flawless and delectable. No, we did not eat all of it that night…truth be told, it took us several nights to eat it all! Go here!

OK, let’s jump back to dinner! Checking in at the Boathouse, we were told to expect a little wait, but not too bad. This gave us time to check out the adjoining gift shop, where our daughter very much hoped to knab a rubber ducky souvenir (which we heard were prevalent there and sort of a mascot-type thing for the restaurant). Unfortunately, the rubber-ducky selection this evening was essentially none. If I recall correctly, we only found one type, with only a few in stock, and it wasn’t one that appealed to her. Oh well…or so we thought!

Text message received to report to the front desk, we presented ourselves and were summarily escorted to a far back room, inside and fairly crowded, seated at a table in front of a fireplace. Our server was very, very nice, introducing herself very warmly and taking our drink orders. What our daughter and I ordered is of no consequence…but what my wife ordered was a thing of beauty:

627564

…and it had a rubber-ducky!!! If you are curious, this is the Duck Duck Razz, consisting of Stoli Razz, Peach Schnapps, Blue Curacao, Lemon Juice, and Simple Syrup. According to my wife, the drink was fantastic!

As soon as the wonderfully blue cocktail arrived at our table, our daughter’s eyes lit up and a sinister look appeared. She immediately claimed the floating duck verbally, at which point my wife laughed and said Nope. The stare down commenced as the little duck floated innocently, not realizing that it had become the center of a rubber-ducky struggle!

The bread service then arrived, four spectacular rolls; honestly, some of the best rolls that I have ever had! Seeing an opportunity to potentially bring peace to the ducky dispute, I quietly mentioned to our server that our daughter was very much enamored with the duck in my wife’s drink, asking if there was any possible way to purchase an additional one. She gave me a wink and said that she would see what she could do. Ok, so you want to see those rolls?!

627565

Next, the appetizer! Three words…Hoisin Chili Calamari! Get this, my friends! Get this!!! All three of us adore fried calamari, but the vast majority of our experience with it in restaurants has it served with a marinara-type sauce for dipping. Generally good, but pretty basic. This dish, however, was FAR from basic, being served with an incredible hoisin chili sauce, plus bell peppers, jalapeno, and serrano chilis alongside. With no hesitation whatsoever, this was the BEST fried calamari dish that we have ever had:

627566

Now for our entrees! Remember back on our Day 2 report in Epcot, during my birthday dinner at Le Cellier? Feel free to scroll back to it! Well, our server at the time was a former server at the Boathouse. While chatting with us about out trip plans, especially the dining, I mentioned that we were looking forward to coming here and that I was very curious about the Maine Style Lobster Roll. Normally, based on the menu description, it is served chilled, with lemon-chive dressing, on a butter-toasted split top bun, served with fries. Me, personally, I love a good lobster roll, but I prefer it warm with melted butter. Chatting with the Le Cellier server, I mentioned this and he said, not a problem, ask for it how you’d like it! So, I did, and this beauty was eventually set down in front of me (the little container of melted butter is not pictured, but was off to the side):

627567

It was everything that I hoped for! I mean, the absolute best “hot” lobster roll that I have ever had was in a restaurant in the North End of Boston while on a business trip, but this one was close! The lobster pieces were rich and succulent. I drizzled a bit of melted butter onto the sandwich for each delectable bite, making sure to lean over my plate as I bit down, as the butter dripped down the side of my mouth and onto my fries! So good!

My wife ordered the Gulf of Mexico Red Grouper, served with baby kale, new potatoes red onions, cremini mushrooms, roasted red peppers, and an orange chili butter. She enjoyed it very, very much:

627568

Our daughter loves Club sandwiches, so she could not pass up their “Yacht Club” Club with roasted turkey breast, cucumber (though she removed that), bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado, chipotle-honey mayo, Swiss cheese, and multigrain bread with fries:

627569

She liked it a lot, but could only take down half of it, so the rest ended up going back to the room. Dessert? Under normal circumstances, we would have loved to, but with our Gideon’s selections bagged up next to us, we had to skip it here.

So, to our Top 5 list of meals on this trip:
  • #1 – It’s coming! I know, I know…how could there possibly be something better that has not already been mentioned?! On the Day 11 report all will be revealed!
  • #2 – Brunch at Homecomin’
  • #3 – Dinner at Le Cellier Steakhouse
  • #4 – Dinner at the Boathouse
  • #5 – It’s also coming! Stay tuned for Day 10!
And what about the rubber-ducky saga?! Well, our wonderful server brought an extra one over and handed it to our daughter for no extra charge. All was well in Duckyland! A little extra Pixie Dust for our wonderful dinner!

Day 9: Epcot Day 3 & Some Technical Difficulties

Today would be our third and final visit to Epcot for this vacation, but before heading over there this morning, we needed some grub. And when you are staying at the Polynesian Village Resort, at least one breakfast must be at the Kona Café! And when enjoying a breakfast at Kona Café, what is the requisite selection? Well, Tonga Toast of course!!!

628074

Two orders! One for me alone and a second for my wife and daughter to share, along with a bowl of fresh fruit on the side. I mean, seriously, if you are reading this trip report, you are most likely not a WDW novice and you know very well the greatness that is Tonga Toast. But, just in case, it is banana-stuffed French toast, “rolled in cinnamon sugar” (not sure how one rolls a cube; methinks “covered” is a better word), and served with strawberry compote and a choice of side; I chose sausage and the ladies selected bacon.

Also, for those not in the know, yes, you can also get this at the Poly’s Capt. Cook’s quick service location, but without the strawberry compote for roughly $5 cheaper. So, how were they? Great as usual! Crisp on the outside, warm and soft on the inside; and the bananas within the bready goodness were sweet. While our daughter went with pineapple juice as her beverage, my wife and I chose the Hawaiian Kona “Maragogype” Press Pot coffee. Yes, again the press pot coffee at WDW did not disappoint! Delicious!

Unlike our previous two Epcot days, when we drove our rental car there, today our daughter really wanted to take the Monorail instead. Just a quick jaunt from the Poly to the TTC and we found ourselves on the “highway in the sky”!

Now, today happened to be the launch day for Genie+ and the new Lightning Lanes. Having familiarized ourselves with the “new” service (I mean really, it wasn’t too terribly different from Disneyland’s Max Pass, save for the second tier, individual cost attractions thing), we discussed it and decided that in our opinion we didn’t really see the value for it at Epcot today, especially since Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure still offered the virtual queue (but more on that later).

I will say this, however…remember how I stated previously in this trip report that while crowds seemed larger than we anticipated and the attraction lines appeared longer than we had hoped for? The reality was that those lines moved, and moved well, almost always resulting in significantly less wait time. Boy, did that immediately change with the Lightning Lanes going more fully active today! Here, at Epcot this day, the impact was not significant, but it was definitely visible. We knew then that our next two theme park days at Studios and the Magic Kingdom were going to be interesting…but, we will get to those two days later.

So, today’s plans for our final Epcot day was pretty simple, pretty unstructured outside of our dinner ADR. Hit our favorite attractions once or twice, finish up with the Food & Wine Festival, pickup any final Epcot souvenirs, and just enjoy the day! And that is exactly what we did! Soarin’, Spaceship Earth, Test Track, The Seas with Nemo & Friends, but ultimately no Frozen Ever After, which meant that we never rode it our entire trip. Sort of a bummer because we like the attraction, but none of us were really broken up about skipping it this time around. Truth is, we really miss Maelstrom!

Lunch time brought us back to the Food & Wine Festival booths. We had to finish up Emile’s Fromage Montage and then get our final treat! Our destination was then the Flavors From Fire booth and their “Corned Beef Corner Route”, an AMAZING conglomeration of smoked corned beef with crispy potatoes, cheese curds, pickled onions, and beer-cheese fondue:

628075

Oh, and we also got one of their “S’mores Whoopie Pie-lons”! Both of these were fantastic! Of the five required items for the Montage, this one was easily the best of the bunch!

Still wanting a bit more for lunch, we then made our way down near the World Showcase, where we found the Australia and Shimmering Sips booths. From Australia, we picked up an order of the Grilled Sweet and Spicy Bush Berry Shrimp, with pineapple, pepper, onion, and snap peas, along with the Roasted Lamb Chop with sweet potato puree, bush berry pea salad, and pistachio-pomegranate gremolata:

628076

Between the two, the shrimp was the absolute winner here. Very, very flavorful! The lamb chop was just ok. We really hoped for more with that item.

From the Shimmering Sips booth, our daughter requested a bottle of water, while my wife and I had to try the Mimosa Flight - Tropical (actually POG), Key Lime, and Blood Orange:

628077

All three of these were excellent! And of course, while here, we had to claim our Montage prize; pieces of fruit cheesecake (not exactly sure what flavor) served atop soft serve in a plastic wine tumbler:

628078

If I am honest, I was a tad disappointed that the tumbler was plastic. I really shouldn’t have expected this to be glass, but a small part of me was hoping that it would be. Still, pretty cool, and the treat was very tasty and refreshing.

As one o’clock in the afternoon rolled by, I managed to score a spot for us in the virtual queue for Remy’s. The estimated time for arriving at the attraction was a couple hours before our dinner ADR, so we figured that we were golden…but fate, as it proved, would dictate otherwise! Mwa-hah-hah!

We spent the bulk of the afternoon wandering around the pavilions of the World Showcase, stopping at the America Gardens Theater to catch great performances by a large Mariachi-style group (forgive me, but I cannot exactly recall their name), as well as the Voices of Liberty. And, yes, it was wonderful to just sit and chill for a bit here in the shade, letting our achy tootsies get a bit of a break.

However, as the time progressed, I kept monitoring the return time for our Remy’s boarding group and little by little it kept getting pushed back, eventually conflicting with our 6:45pm ADR for dinner this evening. Ultimately, we sort of hoped that the pattern would continue, eventually surpassing our meal time, but alas that would not be the case…and we were not about to cancel or not show up on time for our ADR; firstly, because we very much wanted to dine there, and secondly, because doing so would have resulted in a charge by Disney!

Arriving at Tutto Italia Ristorante for our ADR, we were seated quickly…and wouldn’t you know it, as soon as we did, I received the push notification on my phone that our Remy’s boarding window had just opened. We effectively had 1 hour to get over there per the Disney “rules”. Oh well, we figured, we were going to enjoy this meal, not rush it, and then go over to the France pavilion afterwards and see what could be done.

For our Italian meal this evening, we started with an order of the Fior di Latte Caprese! You know, vine-ripened tomatoes and mozzarella, with basil, sea salt, olive oil, and a little balsamic glaze. We all agreed that the cheese was sublime, but I had to take my wife and daughter’s word that the tomatoes were also fresh and excellent (I don’t like raw tomatoes!).

As our entrees, our daughter ordered the Fettucine with a parmesan cream sauce and added chicken. My wife ordered the Lasagne alla Bolognese, traditionally prepared with beef, veal, and pork ragu, bechamel, and parmesan, while I had something not on the online menu, Gnocci Sorrentina, potato dumplings (which I adore) with roasted tomatoes, pomodoro sauce, and burrata cheese (that’s the white stuff in the center of the picture)!

628079

628080

628081

My wife and I both got a wine flight accompaniment (wish I could recall exactly which one):

628082

Fabulous meal! Everything was great! Savory, flavorful, and very, very satisfying! And, no, it didn’t take less than an hour. Officially, our Remy boarding window had closed…or had it?

Deciding to skip dessert, and not being terribly far from the France pavilion, we decided to make our way back over there to see what our options were for Remy. Leaving Italy, I pulled out my phone and managed to bring up the notification in My Disney Experience. Then something strange happened. As we continued on, suddenly the boarding group page disappeared from the app. It was totally gone. I stopped walking and played with the app, but to no avail. Any and all record of that virtual queue boarding group was gone. At the time, even though it was easily 30 minutes beyond the closure of the boarding window, I just figured that this was how it worked.

I informed and showed my family that all reference to the Remy boarding group was gone from the app, asking them what they wanted to do at this point. As a group, we decided to just let it go and not worry about it. Plus, having just eaten, we were not 100% sure that we wanted to go on a 3D adventure at that moment. Instead, we popped into the Morocco pavilion and the Tangierine Café to grab a piece of Pistachio Cake for us to share:

628083

Sitting at a nearby table outside in the very pleasant evening, we enjoyed the small dessert. It wasn’t quite what we hoped it would be. Not exactly sure what we hoped it would be. I will say this, we all agreed that it looked better than it tasted.

Tired from a long day, we slowly made our way back towards the front of the park, bid adieu to Epcot, and hopped on the Monorail back to the TTC. As we walked from the TTC to the Poly, I told my family that I wanted to at least talk to someone about what transpired with the Remy boarding group thing, so we parted ways and I made my way to the front desk in the Great Ceremonial House. There, I explained to the very understanding CM about what happened. Basically, I said that we did everything right, but then the realities of the situation resulted in us having to decide between an ADR (and a potential penalty) and a ride reservation. She stated that most likely, had we gone to Remy’s and explained the situation, that a CM would most likely have let us in. Ultimately, she recommended that when we returned to Epcot that we speak to Guest Relations. I responded that today was our last Epcot day of the trip, but mentioned that we were heading back to Hollywood Studios tomorrow. She said to speak to Guest Relations there; she couldn’t promise that they could or would do anything, but that would be the best option.

Pretty fantastic candy haul at the party! How nice of those cast members to hook you up. I love watching the gorillas in AK. They're so fascinating. Boathouse is one of my favorite spots -- so glad you enjoyed it too. I love the food and drink but find the hospitality to be even better. I'm excited to learn you can order the lobster roll warm -- that never occurred to me. I'm originally from New England and miss these a lot. I am so intrigued to find out what the #1 meal was!!

Day 10: Hollywood Studios Day 2 & Best Meal #5!

Second and final day at Hollywood Studios today! Yes, of course we ate breakfast before driving over there, but it was a repeat at Kona Island, so nothing exciting and new to report on there, so let’s get to the good stuff, shall we?!

First off, we decided to purchase Genie+ for Hollywood Studios today, but not the Lightning Lane access for Rise of the Resistance nor Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway. The process through the app on my phone was easy enough, but two things to be aware of…there was sales tax on the purchase (which I just saw on an online article is not the case for Disneyland; a Florida thing?) and the transaction was done using the credit card linked to the app (similar to a mobile order payment), not directly onto our room account (which was my actual preference as I like to have a fully itemized log of all Disney transactions…we had been burned before).

As recommended by the CM at the Poly front desk the night before, as soon as we entered Hollywood Studios, I immediately popped over and into the short queue for their Guest Relations. “Short” as compared to the Guest Relations line just outside of the main entrance, where that queue was a good dozen or so people long. Where we were, there was a number of CMs, all dressed in the “plaids”, holding tablets, greeting those of us in the queue and asking how they could help. As each interaction commenced, the CM would politely ask the person or group to walk with them to a separated location nearby to converse.

The CM who assisted us was very nice, but very puzzled by what we claimed to have experienced at Epcot with Remy. Scanning my Magic Band, she retrieved our account and reviewed our history. Now displaying an even more puzzled look, she asked us to hold tight while she went inside the Guest Relations building for a good 10 minutes or so. When she returned, she flat out told me that there was no evidence in their side of the system that we ever had the virtual boarding group for Remy last night. Ah, I said, retrieving my phone from my pocket and bringing up my Gallery folder, I then called up the screen shot image that I smartly took of the display in My Disney Experience, showing our boarding group. I had done this during our dinner at Tutto Italia Ristorante on a hunch…looks like it was a good idea!

Still baffled, but now persuaded by the evidence, the CM simply asked, “What would you like?” My wife and I looked at one another and I responded, “What are our options?” She said, “I can give you Rise of the Resistance or…” We politely stopped her there. “If we can get Rise, then that would be awesome!” And so, we did! She tapped on her tablet a few times and said that we were all set for Rise via the Lightning Lane, with no restriction on the return time today! I’d say that was an acceptable resolution, huh?!

Before letting us go, she asked me for some more information for their internal documentation. Basically, what type of phone did I have, what operating system, and what version. She admitted that the record of our Remy boarding group, even though we missed it, shouldn’t have simply disappeared from our account and she couldn’t explain why it did. Hopefully, whatever information they can glean from our experience can help them troubleshoot their system and ensure that nothing similar impacts others in the future.

Knowing that we could hop over to Rise whenever we wished, we chose to jump in the line for Runaway Railway first. It was still morning, not terribly busy just yet, so the queue wasn’t horrible; not great, but about 45 minutes or so. And, yes, we checked our watches, it proved to be a true 45 minutes in the Stand By line, as those who paid for the second tier Lightning Lane access legitimately used their privilege, entering the attraction through the shorter line, and logically impacting the general wait. Not a huge deal by any means, but a real, observed impact of the new service now being online.

629133

While in the Railway queue, we checked out our Genie+ Lightning Lane reservation options and were not immediately impressed with what was available. The attractions with more immediate return times were not really ones that we were excited about, nor we felt necessitated Lightning Lane access. The really “good” ones already displayed return times into the afternoon. Being veterans of app-based FastPass in WDW and MaxPass at Disneyland, we were not novices on how this tool worked, but boy was this frustrating.

Next, seeing as we hadn’t ridden it yet, with only late-ish Genie+ access available, and fearful that the Stand By line, currently at about 30 minutes, would only get worse as the day progressed, we decided to return to Galaxy’s Edge for Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run, where my daughter and I got to pilot the beloved piece of junk! It was a blast, but proved to be a forecast of my day, the ride made my motion sickness kick in a bit (and yes, I was wearing a motion sickness patch which usually helps a lot). Not too bad though.

Knowing that Rise of the Resistance can be glitchy and go down every now and then, we decided to take advantage of where we were and our bonus Lightning Lane pass to experience this amazing attraction one more time. Again, it was spectacular, but…it didn’t go off as perfectly as our first time the other day. On the First Order Star Destroyer, we were escorted into the detention chamber and watched the projections of Kylo Ren and General Hux, but then nothing happened. At this point in the adventure, you are supposed to be rescued by members of the Resistance via a hole that is cut into one of the side walls. Well, that simply didn’t happen. Those of us in the group who knew what to expect, immediately realized that something wasn’t quite right and after a few minutes, the front door to the chamber opened and a First Order officer ordered us out and back into line in the hallway. Eventually, we were ordered into a different cell, where we watched Hux and Kylo again, but this time the escape worked!

Now on the “dark ride” portion of Rise, our droid driven vehicle yet again got us through. One cool thing was that in the AT-AT walkers’ room, our ride vehicle went into a different direction versus our first ride, giving us a slightly different perspective on this part of the fun! Also, something a bit different and not planned I suspect (maybe?)…when we arrived in the room with the single Kylo Ren animatronic, there was a huge thing blocking our view of him completely and I don’t recall there being any audible soundtrack of him speaking. Instead, the right-side video screens, showing the space battle going on “outside” drew our attention, where Kylo could be seen in a Tie-Fighter. Unlike our previous ride, no threatening Kylo figure getting blasted as the back wall was blown out. I think I heard of this being something called “B Mode” and I am not certain if it is an expected optional experience or one that is done when there is an issue with the animatronic figure. It certainly didn’t spoil the overall experience.

629134

Nearing 11am and having already ridden Railway, Falcon, and Rise, and our first general Genie+ Lightning Lane return time still an hour or so away, we decided to grab some lunch at the ABC Commissary. Mobile order submitted, we once again had to wait outside and show the CM at the door our pickup push notification before being allowed entrance to the building. Claiming our food and then a table along the far end window, we enjoyed a tasty meal.

My wife ordered the Mediterranean Salad with mixed greens, tomatoes, cucumber, pepperoncini, Kalamata olives, and feta tossed in a Mediterranean vinaigrette, served with hummus and grilled flatbread. She enjoyed it very much. Our daughter adores Club sandwiches and had to order their Chicken Club Sandwich; and so did I. We too were quite happy with our selection, but if I am honest, they were not the most photogenic meals. However, the two treats that we purchased along with them were…the Frozen Apple Cider and the Caramel Apple Tart…

629135

These were as yummy as they were picturesque!

Content with our lunch and shared treats, we headed back out into the park to hit some more attractions. We enjoyed Muppet Vision 3D, not requiring use of Genie+ because we were able to walk right in, and then made our way over to Toy Story Land. Our Genie+ reservation was for Toy Story Mania, but we were still a tad early, so we enjoyed a fun little ride on Alien Swirling Saucers (again, not needing to use Genie+). Not long after getting off of the Saucers, our time arrived for Mania, which we always love, and upon exiting the attraction I was amazingly able to nab a time for Slinky Dog Dash in about an hour (my guess is that someone canceled theirs)! This allowed us to jump into the Stand By line for Mania one more time!

This would be our first time riding Slinky Dog and we were all very excited. Observing it, the ride seems rather tame; a coaster fit for the younger crowd. Quick, with some rises, mild drops, and a few decent banks, but nothing compared to Space Mountain or Everest. Not very different from Barnstormer in the Magic Kingdom in our opinion. Boy, was I in for a surprise!

I mean, the ride was everything that I described above, but I could not imagine how much it was going to mess with me. Since each row of the ride vehicles are two-seaters, my wife and daughter shared one row and I was seated next to another single person. The ride began and all seemed perfectly fine. It was fun; but as it progressed, my head just started feeling a little woozy. Honestly, I didn’t get it. It was an outdoor coaster, the wind was blowing in my face; it wasn’t extremely hot at that particular moment in the afternoon, but I came off of it feeling really off. I don’t get sick or anything like that, rather I just get a headache and feel strange. Perhaps it was having to wear the facemask; I simply don’t know. In any event, I needed to sit and chill for a bit to recover.

While relaxing, I checked Genie+ again and was able to grab a time for Tower of Terror. Since we had time before that window opened, we saw that a performance of Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage was starting soon, so we headed up there to enjoy the show in a nice, seated, and shaded area; and again, we didn’t need Genie+ for this either. Are you seeing a pattern?

The Beauty and the Beast show was as pleasant as we remembered, still leaving us with some time to kill before our Tower arrival time. We decided that some cold drinks were in order and grabbed a table at a nearby quick service location. It was at this point that we really hit a wall. I was still feeling a little off and our daughter suddenly really didn’t want to go on Tower any longer. Disappointed, yet thankfully understanding, my wife said that she didn’t want to ride Tower by herself. So, we talked about it and eventually decided that we simply had enough that day. I then went into the app and canceled our Tower reservation so that someone else could enjoy them. In the end, we never rode Tower of Terror or Rock’n’Roller Coaster this trip, which was a bummer.

So, our Genie+ assessment…we felt, and admittedly some of this was on us and how we felt that day, that it simply wasn’t a value here. Given the decent crowd levels, the majority of the attractions that it granted Lightning Lane access to simply didn’t need it. When the Stand By wait time is 15 minutes or less, we didn’t really see much benefit. Granted, it was nice for Toy Story Mania and Slinky Dog Dash, where the posted wait times were longer, but in the grand scheme of things, we didn’t use it enough and this very much played into our decision not to purchase it for the Magic Kingdom on our final day in the parks.

Dinner tonight would return us to Disney Springs. Since we left Hollywood Studios early, we found ourselves taking our sweet time wandering through shops we had yet to visit along the West Side area. Our daughter particularly loved the M&M store. We also took a dramatic moment to stand in front of the former Disney Quest site and pay homage to one of our favorite places. Looking off to the immediate right, we looked fondly upon the Cirque du Soleil theater, reminiscing about the show we saw several years ago. Had it re-opened in time for this trip, I am sure that we would have made time to see the new Drawn to Life performance; next time perhaps!

Finally, it was dinner time! Tonight’s choice was Frontera Cocina! Now, having been born and raised in San Diego, I consider Mexican cuisine to be one of my absolute favorites. And I like to think that I know the difference between really good Mexican food, mediocre versions, and just plain blah. Generally, when we travel, we tend to avoid Mexican restaurants in most other cities because they simply cannot compare to what we can get (and regularly get) back home. That said, there are some exceptions…one primary exception are the restaurants in Rick Bayless’ Frontera group.

I was first introduced to Chef Bayless’ cuisine while visiting Chicago on a business trip many years ago and fell in love with it immediately. His food was perfection and every time I get the privilege to return to the Windy City, I make a point to visit that wonderful corner at Clark and Illinois streets, where I enjoy two of his three establishments there! And I say this with all honesty…his is the BEST guacamole that I have ever had and one of two that I only really like (the other being at a restaurant in San Diego of course). I cannot stand avocados and am not a fan of guacamole as a whole, but his guac is magical and I absolutely adore it!

Now, to our meal! We of course started with an order of the Guacamole & Chips with Bacon; paired with smoky chipotle and herby salsa. The guac is made with bacon, tomatillos, toasted pepitas, cilantro, and onion. Simply delectable stuff:

629136

For our entrees, I ordered my usual, the Carne Asada; garlic and red-chile-marinated angus steak, served with black bean refritos with queso fresco, caramelized plantains with crema and Cotija cheese (some of the BEST things in the world!!!), tomatillo salsa, and warm tortillas:

629137

Thinking back, and using our picture to help refresh her memory, we believe that my wife ordered the Carnitas Enchiladas; corn tortillas, slow-cooked pork carnitas, roasted butternut, cranberry-infused red mole, Chihuahua cheese, crema, black beans. They also threw a whole bunch of crispy onions on top (which she shared and were fabulous!):

629138

Oh! I cannot forget to mention the amazing Avocado Margarita that my wife ordered and absolutely loved:

629139

And our daughter decided upon the Carne Asada Tacos; grilled steak, poblano rajas, black bean refritos with queso fresco, salsa verde, and guacamole. She devoured them!

629140

Needless to say, we were all very content after our appetizer and entrees! But wait! We were not done! Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Pignata!!!

629142

Listed on the menu as serving two people, it was absolutely perfect for the three of us! The Pignata was a chocolate shell filled with cajeta mousse, tender cake infused with Abasolo whiskey and vanilla (we confirmed with the server that the alcohol was cooked off), and crumble of chipotle bacon, candied orange and Maria cookies. It was delicious and a perfect way to end the meal! And our daughter had great fun using the provided mallet (which we got to keep) to break the little swine open!

629143

All of it…the inside and the outside were delicious. I had read reports that this was underwhelming, but we didn’t think so in the least. We enjoyed it very much!

If you are keeping track of our meal rankings…this one was #5!
  • #1 – It’s coming next! On the Day 11 report all will be revealed!
  • #2 – Brunch at Homecomin’
  • #3 – Dinner at Le Cellier Steakhouse
  • #4 – Dinner at the Boathouse
  • #5 – Dinner at Frontera Cocina

Ok, the pignata is the cutest dessert I've ever seen! I agree with you on the guacamole at Frontera Cocina. I've been underwhelmed by the entrees I've had but I think I need to give it another try. I forget now what I ordered but I may have just made the wrong choice for me. Interesting mystery on your Ratatouille boarding pass. Glad that they were able to offer you RotR. As a Star Wars fan, I adore that attraction but goodness is it glitchy. I hope they are able to figure out the issues b/c it can cause the line to back-up significantly. Sorry to hear Slinky messed with you. Glad it wasn't too serious and you could enjoy the remainder of the day. I haven't tried Genie+ yet but your experience seems to track with others I've read. Will be interesting to watch it as it continues to evolve. Cannot wait to see the #1 meal!!!

Day 11: Our 20th Wedding Anniversary, a Little Golf, & Meal #1! Part 1

On this day 20 years ago, we got married along the water in San Diego. On this day, 25 years ago, we had our first date. On this specific day, we had plans for some great food and some fun!

First things first (after sleeping in of course)…breakfast! And when you are staying at the Polynesian Village Resort and have already had breakfast at Kona Café, Kona Island, and Capt. Cooks…what could possibly be left?! Why yes…Ohana!!! Now, in the past, Ohana has been one of our absolute favorites, both for breakfast and dinner. After seeing and reading about the menu changes for dinner, we decided to skip it for dinner this trip, but we simply could not pass it up for breakfast!

Seated along the window, we had a fantastic view on a beautiful morning. The only problem was that they stuck us at a table that honestly, especially given the spread that awaited delivery, was better suited for two people, not three. We made it work, but we all felt a tad cramped.

631383

631384

The spread was great as usual! The seasonal fruit was bright, fresh, and tasty. The Pineapple-Coconut Breakfast Bread was perfection (ordered seconds on that). And everything served in the skillet was flavorful and well prepared. If I am honest, we are not huge fans of ham steaks in general (see my earlier comments about my dinner at Skipper Canteen), which they dub “Hawaiian-style Ham topped with Pineapple Compote”, so this one skillet item was not our favorite; but overall, the meal was wonderful and a great start to our anniversary! Oh, and did I mention that the POG juice flowed!!!!

With our meal over by around 10:30am and our dinner ADR set for 8:00pm, we had an abundance of time on our hands for a little bit of fun! Originally, I hoped to take out a watercraft for a relaxing cruise from either the Poly, the Grand Floridian, or maybe even the Contemporary, but ultimately, we decided upon something less chill and more fun.

631385

Initially planning to play just one round of 18-holes, we chose the Winter course. It was wonderful! Each hole was designed with such cleverness and imagination. We couldn’t wait to get to the next hole to see what was in store for us!

631386

631387

631388

631389

Finishing the winter course and turning in our putters, the CM asked if we wanted to play another round at a discount. We looked at one another and unanimously agreed that we’d love to try the summer course as well! Discount applied (more on that below), putters retained, new balls claimed, we headed off to where the wintery snow was melting and Santa and the elves were vacationing!

631390

631391

631392

Overall, we very much enjoyed playing two rounds at Winter Summerland. It was a wonderful break from the constant go, the rush of the theme parks…and no crowds to deal with either. There were other groups playing, but not many, so there really was no impetus to hurry. We took our time, harassed one another (gamesmanship, right?!), and applauded when someone made a great putt!

Now, it was a bit pricey for mini-golf…but then you are at Disney World, so what do you expect? I will say this though, I read on multiple Disney World fan sites after the fact that if you bought a second round of golf on the same day, that the second go was 50% off the regular price. That is not what we were charged to play the other course immediately after completing the first one; rather, our discount was about 25%. So, for the three of us, a round of mini golf on both the winter and summer courses came to about, with tax, $80.00…oh, but the parking was free!!!

Day 11: Our 20th Wedding Anniversary, a Little Golf, & Meal #1! Part 2

Departing Winter Summerland, we returned to the Polynesian in the early afternoon with plenty of time still before our dinner ADR. We decided to just chill for a bit at the resort. Not being super hungry when lunch time came around, my family chose to nibble on remnants of their Gideon’s cookies, while I slipped over to the Pineapple Lanai and grabbed one of my personal favorites…a Pineapple Dole Whip Float:

631394

Not a bad lunch, eh?!

Eventually, it was time to depart to our destination…Disney Springs. Driving over, we once again had no problem finding parking, and with still a few hours before our reservation, we meandered through a variety of shops, made a few purchases, and checked out one in particular for an after-dinner purchase.

Alright, faithful readers, you have been patient and loyal while I led up to the #1 meal of our entire vacation. The time has come!!! I give you…Morimoto Asia!

We first dined here on our last WDW visit and absolutely adored it. During early trip planning for this trip, we originally hoped to dine at Victoria & Alberts, like we did on our honeymoon, but since it had yet to re-open its doors, we picked Morimoto Asia as a very viable alternative! For our taste buds, the options here are simply the best. We love many different styles of Asian cuisine and having a singular location of this quality that offers a fusion of flavors, it will always be a must-do for us.

When I made the reservation, through OpenTable not My Disney Experience, I made a point of detailing that it was for our anniversary. Upon being notified that our table was ready, the hosts immediately wished us a happy anniversary, as did our server once she arrived at our table. In fact, our server even provided us with a special Happy Anniversary postcard from the restaurant!

Drinks were summarily ordered and when the topic of an appetizer came up, we looked at one another and nodded (having previously discussed it multiple times in lead up to our vacation). We ordered some of the Japanese A5 Wagyu Beef (a first time for all three of us)! Prepared tableside over a grilling stone with Sansho peppercorn sauce, A5 is, according to the menu, “the highest quality given only to the finest certified beef from Japan.” I mean, apparently, they massage these cows and give them beer to drink, right?! I don’t recall exactly how many ounces we ordered, but ultimately, we each received four individual slices…

631398

631399

…and they were SPECTACULAR!!!! Incredibly flavorful, melt in your mouth, barely had to chew, slices of beef! Definitely a very special experience for a very special day! Yes, pricey, but ultimately priceless!

And I must mention this…as part of the Wagyu experience, our server presented us with a certificate of authenticity. Beyond the top statement regarding general aspects of its certification, it also detailed where it came from (Kagoshima prefecture), its breed (Kuroge Wagyu, Japanese Black), birth date, gender (“steer”, so male), and yes, his name (Katsumi). There was also something on the certificate that struck us as rather odd and resulted in a strange debate at our table amongst the three of us. Off to the right of the Grade classification was an imprint of some sort. At first glance, it looked like a nose print (at least that is how I interpreted it), but my family refused to believe that was what it was. We ended up asking our server, who claimed not to know. She returned later and said that it was a stamp “of a nose print” and not necessarily from the actual steer. Googling it afterwards, nose prints are common practice on Wagyu certificates of authenticity, so who knows?! In any event, thank you Katsumi the Steer, you were delicious!

For our entrees, my wife ordered the Morimoto "Buri-Bop"; Korean-style yellowtail rice bowl served in a hot clay pot, finished with egg yolk. When it arrived at the table, our server finished its preparation/mixture right in front of us!

631400

For my daughter and me, we decided to share the Morimoto Peking Duck; carved house-roasted whole duck, served with steamed flour pancakes, apricot sweet chili, hoisin miso and choice of steamed white or brown rice (we chose the brown rice).

631401

Both dishes were…gee, what are the best words to describe amazing food?! Or are there words? I mean every bite, I mean EVERY BITE, was fantastic. Our duck was AMAZING, served both as boneless slices, as well as bone-in legs and wings portions. Grab a steamed pancake, dab on a bit of both sauces, and slap some duck in there and devour! So great! And my wife’s buri-bop was rich, full of complex flavors, hearty, and so, so satisfying. This was DEFINITELY THE BEST MEAL OF OUR ENTIRE TRIP!!!

So, the final Top 5:
  • #1 – Dinner at Morimoto Asia
  • #2 – Brunch at Homecomin’
  • #3 – Dinner at Le Cellier Steakhouse
  • #4 – Dinner at the Boathouse
  • #5 – Dinner at Frontera Cocina
As a special gesture from the restaurant, they presented us a free little dessert of three scoops of gelato, which we shared and was very tasty, but not what we had ultimately planned to finish out our evening with. Leaving Morimoto Asia very, very happy, we returned to The Ganachery to pickup one of these little beauties:

631402

Similar to the Pignata from Frontera Cocina, we now had a Mickey Mummy to crack open. Unfortunately, they had run out of “Ganachery” emblazoned mallets, but thankfully we still had the one they gave us at Frontera in our resort room.

631403

Inside was a menagerie of chocolate squares, decked out in a variety of Halloween colors and decorations. These pieces of chocolate, both inside and from the shell, were excellent. We actually felt that this chocolate was better than the Pignata the previous evening (not to take anything away from it because that was excellent too).

After enjoying the Mickey Mummy in our room, since it was still our anniversary, we headed down to Trader Sam’s Tiki Terrace and grabbed a table. My wife and I ordered a Nautilus to share, which in case you are not aware is a drink for two, normally served in their amazing Nautilus mug. During a previous visit, likewise out on the Terrace, we ordered one and adored sipping it out of that cool mug! This time, however, we received our drinks in separate plastic cups. I came to learn later that had we been inside the actual Grog Grotto that it would have been served in a mug. Oh well. The drinks were still excellent!

Calling it a day, happily satisfied, we returned to our room and did a tiny bit of packing prep since we would be heading home in two days. Tomorrow though, one more day (or part of a day) in the Magic Kingdom!

Oh...and boy was it cool walking under this colorful beauty as we returned to the Poly...

View attachment 631403

During a previous visit, likewise out on the Terrace, we ordered on and adored sipping it out of that cool mug!

Next up…Day 12: Our Final Park Day at the Magic Kingdom
Happy Anniversary (belated of course!)

that Wagu looksAMAZING.
sadly I’m one of maybe 2 or 3 humans in my family that would want to eat there but hopefully one day!

Day 12: Our Final Park Day at the Magic Kingdom, Part 1

The plan today, our final park day of the vacation, was to get up and into the Magic Kingdom as early as possible, grabbing breakfast in the park, enjoying most of the day, and then heading back to the Polynesian to pack and have one final nice meal nearby. Needless to say, given our experience with Genie+ the prior day at Studios, we chose not to purchase it today…though I suspect that the greater number of attractions at the Magic Kingdom versus Studios may have improved the experience and value, but given that we were leaving early today, it was a moot point.

Entering the Magic Kingdom, we headed straightaway to Sleepy Hollow to finally try this:

635783

The famous Fresh Fruit Waffle Sandwich! This scrumptious menagerie of goodness, made up of strawberries, bananas, blueberries, and chocolate-hazelnut spread, was delicious! We ordered two for the three of us to share and we were very happily satisfied. Truth be told, of all of our WDW vacations, this trip was the first time that we ever dined at Sleepy Hollow, both now for breakfast and earlier on for lunch…oh that amazing sweet and spicy chicken waffle sandwich! I cannot believe that it took us this long to come here. It will be on our must-do list from now on!

Our park activities for the day were pretty basic…hit whatever attractions we could (especially any that we hadn’t experienced yet), re-visit favorite shops, grab a small-ish lunch, and head back to the resort in the mid-afternoon to begin packing. The details of the day are not super important. We hit the rides that we wanted to enjoy one last time (even with Genie+ lengthening the stand-by wait), but the singular attraction that we most wanted to experience was one that we simply walked onto, or should I say UP into…

635785

Yes, theoretically, we still have a big fake tree at Disneyland, but with its Tarzan overlay it is just not as cool at the original Swiss Family Robinson design. I know…they are not terribly different in the grand scheme of things, but we just have a soft place in our hearts for the original. And, heck, I just love this view:

635787

Lunch time! And since we were in Adventureland, it was time for us to experience something else famous at the Magic Kingdom that we had never enjoyed before! First things first, a place to sit. Since it was fairly crowded, we first did a little searching and ultimately found an outside table in the shade at Tortuga Tavern, which was actually open. While our daughter stayed at the table, my wife jumped into the nearby Tortuga queue (no mobile order option) to get us three Desert Pear Lemonade Pirate slushies and a Mickey pretzel. I, on the other hand, trekked up to the front of Adventureland to the famous spring roll wagon! There was a decent line, which grew longer as I stood in it because it moved mighty slow. That said, it was SO worth it!

635789

As I understand it, the spring roll flavors can change from time to time, but there are usually one of two options that are always there: cheeseburger or pepperoni pizza. Today, they offered the cheeseburger rolls (with a white secret sauce) and, for the 50th celebration, another with pastrami and pepper jack cheese, served with a mustard dipping sauce. I ended up ordering one order of each flavor and then rushed back to my family while they were still hot.

635790

635791

I swear! After devouring these little beauties and the Sleepy Hollow goodness earlier, I have no clue why I never trusted those in the know and visited these locations before. Seriously…lessoned learned! The spring rolls were crispy on the outside, savory and bursting with flavor on the inside. Add the respective dips and wow! That said, personally, I like mustard, but I would have really loved a Russian Dressing type sauce with the pastrami rolls. I tried a bite of a pastrami roll with a dab of the secret sauce that came with the cheeseburger rolls, which was good, but didn’t quite offer up the right tang that I usually get from a Russian Dressing-type sauce. Still, they were great! Oh…and the slushies were fantastic too!

As the afternoon progressed, we hit a few more attractions and meandered through a few shops. Thinking back on it now, this was when I made a regretful mistake. While in the Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe in Liberty Square, I spotted an ornament of the Country Bear show building; front façade on one side and on the reverse some of the bears themselves. I really have fond memories of the Country Bears attraction, especially in Disneyland as a kid. I wanted the ornament very much, but told myself that I didn’t want to carry it around the park for the next few hours, so I’d just circle back before we left to pick one up. Guess what happened? I forgot. Crossing fingers that they will show up on shopDisney one of these days.

The time eventually arrived and we left the Magic Kingdom for the last time of our trip. While our daughter wanted to take the Monorail back to the Poly, my wife and I both really wanted to ride the water craft one final time. I mean, seriously, you simply cannot beat this view:

Bummer that you got served plastic on Trader Sam's patio. I'll remember that if we ever go back there.

I'm starving after reading this report! The duck at Morimoto looks so good. We've never eaten there so that's one place I'll remember to try and get an ADR for next time we go. We've also never have had the pear slushy from Tortuga or the waffle strawberry sandwich from sleepy Hollow. Come to think of it almost everything you guys ate looks really good. Now I've got to go get something to eat.

LOL! You are welcome!!!

Day 12: Our Final Park Day at the Magic Kingdom, Part 2

Returning to our room at the Polynesian Village Resort, it was time to pack a bit more before getting dressed for our final dinner. Tonight would take us over to the Grand Floridian…to Citricos. Having re-opened in mid-July with a new theme (Mary Poppins) and a new menu, we jumped at the chance when an ADR became available. Being at the Grand, and our reservation being at 8:10pm, we enjoyed a wonderful leisurely walk under the cool evening sky along the pathway that connects the two resorts. Snaking around the perimeter of the Grand, we mostly walked near the water, eventually passing by the pool area, and then around to the front of the resort, beneath the monorail station. Entering the main building, we found the staircase off to our right and made our way upstairs. Since we were a bit early, we briefly visited the gift shop and then made our way over to the restaurant.

Warmly greeted, we checked in and as usual provided my cell number for table ready notification. Sitting down at a nearby table, literally within the Citricos lobby space, not 10 feet away from the CM who took my number, we rested for maybe 2 minutes before my phone vibrated. Honestly, I just had to laugh a bit here on the technological dependency. I mean, the CM literally just had to turn her head to the right and tell us that our table was ready. Instead, she punched in my cell number into their system and alerted me that way instead.

We were seated in what I believe was an open room near the back of the restaurant and every table was occupied. Our table offered a shared couch on one side and individual chairs on the other. No surprise that my wife and daughter claimed the couch for themselves and I happily took one of the chairs. Looking around the overall space, it was very elegant and very nice. There is a requested minimum dress code here (check their website), but if I am honest I think I noticed a few folks that stretched the boundaries of it.

Our server greeted us very warmly, welcomed us to Citricos, and congratulated us on our wedding anniversary (which was as you may recall the day before…I guess it got noted somewhere in our Disney account). First things first were drinks. At the Epcot Food & Wine Festival, I previously mentioned a Cherry beer that I loved from the Germany booth. Well, here, they offered a Hefeweizen from the same brewery (Schofferhofer), except this one was Pomegranate! It was delicious! My wife ordered an Orange Blossom Martini, made with Diplomatico Rum, orange blossom honey, lemon juice, and ginger foam; she enjoyed it very much!

Our daughter, on the other hand, perused the specialty “Zero-Proof” cocktails section of the menu and selected the Purple Penguin…pineapple, peach, lemon, lavender, grenadine, and topped with house-made seltzer. Oh, and it was presented at the table in a penguin (available on Amazon FYI…we ended up ordering one for our daughter for Christmas) and poured into a drinking glass.

Having heard, seen, and read so many good things about the food options here, we decided to go all out and order a first course, entrees, and dessert. For our first course, my wife and daughter shared the Strawberry Salad (chamomile infused goat cheese, frisée lettuce, bacon vinaigrette and spiced sunflower seeds). They absolutely adored it!

637965

I, however, tried the Sweet Corn Bisque, made with pickled fennel, popcorn (yes, popcorn) and fennel oil. My friends, mere words cannot simply describe how amazing this bisque was. Order this!!!

637966

For our entrees, my wife ordered the Domestic Golden Tilefish, served with Jupiter rice chorizo "Risotto", Key West pink shrimp and confit tomatoes. Our daughter requested the oak-grilled 12-oz Prime New York strip with potato puree, broccolini (there’s that broccolini yet again!), cippolini jam, and bordelaise. And I got the Guava Barbecued Short Ribs, which came with aged cheddar creamy grits, roasted poblano, curtido slaw, and brussels sprouts.

637967

637968

637969

While my family very much enjoyed their meals, I was left a little wanting. Don’t get me wrong; overall, my short ribs were tasty, but the main reason that I ordered it was the guava barbecue aspect to it. Yes, there was a guava sauce or glaze atop it, but not enough for my liking. The ribs were boneless and quite thick, meaning that the sauce really only impacted the bites taken from the top of the meat. Those bites enjoyed from the lower layers were good, but simply tasted like beef. I suppose that I could have asked for more guava sauce on the side, which I didn’t do, so that is on me. Still, a tasty dish overall, but if I returned and ordered it again, I would definitely ask for some extra guava.

Finally, it was time for dessert! Honestly, during trip planning, this was the part of this meal that I was most looking forward to. The ladies decided that they wanted to share something, so they ordered the Chocolate Torte, emblazoned with a chocolate 50th “coin” and per the menu consisted of, “Chocolate Financier, Dark Chocolate Ganache, Morello Cherries and Vanilla Mascarpone Cream.” They loved it, but since they are not big cherry fans, they gave bites with the Morello cherries to me and oh, so good!

Me? Well, I had to have an Apple Rose, served warm with seasonal apples, marzipan, raspberry jam, and frozen coconut milk. This was so delicious and a perfect exclamation point for this meal.

637970

637971

Happily fed, we made the slow trek back along the water to the Poly. Back in the room, we completed the melancholy task of our final packing. How we managed to get all of the stuff we brought plus all of the stuff we bought into our luggage and carry-ons is a mystery, but we did it. My wife concluded this evening that her particular piece of luggage would undoubtedly go over the 50-pound limit for checked bags not incurring an additional fee by the airline. I am happy to report that it made it just barely under the 50-pound threshold the next morning. Phew!

While our return home technically occurred the following day, I will briefly comment on it here (ok, maybe not too briefly). Originally, we had a direct flight on Alaska Airlines from Orlando to San Diego, leaving fairly late in the afternoon; effectively giving us a good part of a day to potentially enjoy some more things Disney (or maybe see a family member who lives in the area). Fate, unfortunately, dictated otherwise as time crept closer and closer towards our trip dates. For a reason that the airline representatives could never explain, our original direct flight, which is apparently a daily flight, was canceled on our particular return date, yet fully intact on the dates surrounding it. I recall one airline rep asking if we could simply leave Orlando a day early or stay one more night; to wit I replied, um no. Ultimately, they ended up routing us through their hub, Seattle, and forced us to leave Orlando in the late-ish morning.

So, we flew from Orlando up to Seattle, and then down to San Diego. Yeah, it was a LONG travel day to say the least. Oh, and I must mention that once we arrived in Seattle, we got to enjoy a nice 4 and a half hour visit to their fine airport…essentially trapped in a wing that was under some level of construction as we discovered…and had NO STARBUCKS…in the Seattle airport…how does that happen?!! Anyhow, there, we enjoyed a table service meal of burgers, fries, and sodas for almost $100.00 with tip (and I thought Disney prices were crazy!). Still, at least this food was actually pretty darn good!

The flight from Seattle to San Diego, though only a little over 2 hours long, proved to be a bit stressful. A person seated across the aisle from my wife became physically ill as we started to taxi from the Seattle terminal. I won’t go into the yucky details, but his mask helped contain things a bit, but was also sort of a bad thing…and I will leave it at that. The person to his right immediately pressed the call button, but since we were taxiing, none of the flight attendants could get up to respond. One of them got onto the overhead speaker, asking someone to press it again if it was an emergency, which someone did, yet still no one arrived. My wife grabbed one of those special little bags from the compartment in front of her and handed it to the man along with some sanitation wipes. He graciously accepted it and well um…found it useful, all the while repeatedly telling all of us around him that it wasn’t COVID, rather something that he ate. You just cannot trust gas station sushi!

Once airborne to the appropriate elevation, one of the flight attendants came over to him, evaluating the situation. She caringly escorted him up to the facilities at the front of the plane, providing him with things to clean himself up with, as well as a new mask. After several minutes, he returned and managed to get some sleep for the majority of the flight. Unfortunately, as we started our descent into San Diego, he awoke, started coughing, and well, it happened again. Thankfully this time, he was better equipped. Poor guy, but as you can imagine, those of us seated around him REALLY wanted to get off of that plane once we connected to the terminal in San Diego.

But, I don’t want to end this trip report on a sour note, so since I spent a goodly amount of time and effort documenting meals, let’s write a more complete best of list! You already knew the top 5, so let’s add 5 more:
  • #1 – Dinner at Morimoto Asia
  • #2 – Brunch at Homecomin’
  • #3 – Dinner at Le Cellier Steakhouse
  • #4 – Dinner at the Boathouse
  • #5 – Dinner at Frontera Cocina
  • #6 – Breakfast at Trattoria al Forno
  • #7 – Dinner at the California Grill
  • #8 – Dinner at Citricos
  • #9 – Dinner at Sanaa
  • #10 – Dinner at the Hollywood Brown Derby
BIG PROPS to Satu'li Canteen. Yes, it is a quick service, where everything else above is table service, but for the quality and price, it cannot be beat! And a HUGE honorable mention for the Pulled Pork Nachos from Capt. Cook’s at the Polynesian!!!

And how about this…Best Breakfasts…because I scoured the DIS Boards for table service breakfast reviews and recommendations:
  • #1 – Brunch at Homecomin’
  • #2 – Breakfast at Trattoria al Forno
  • #3 – Breakfast at Steakhouse 71
  • #4 – Breakfast at Boma
  • #5 – Breakfast at Ohana
So, there you have it! I hope that you enjoyed reading of our adventures (and our dining) as much as I enjoyed documenting them. Overall, it was a wonderfully magical vacation. One that we desperately needed and will look back upon with very fond memories. Too bad TRON wasn’t up and running as it was originally planned. TRON is my all-time favorite movie and I must one day ride a light cycle (even if it is the Legacy model). Guess we need to return when that attraction finally goes online!

You flight home sounds like a terrible experience. It somewhat reminded me of the time I was supposed to fly to Anchorage, AK from Madison, WI on Delta. My flight was canceled, and they shipped me off to the Milwaukee airport on a bus. From there I flew out on a Delta flight down to Atlanta and then finally up to Anchorage. No sickie's though.

Overall though you did have a nice trip and thanks for the report and meal rankings. Our best dinner on our trip (Nov. 27 - Dec. 8) was at the Boathouse. Our best breakfast was a toss-up between the Grand Floridian Cafe and Trattoria El Forno.

Yeah, our flight experience certainly could have been worse! LOL! I tell ya...that Trattoria al Forno breakfast was SO awesome! I could see us going there twice on a future trip!
