This is why I always book directly with the airline. I own the reservation, I make the seat selection.
That doesn't necessarily matter - I paid for seat selection on our last trip to ensure we'd be sitting together and when we arrived at the airport it turned out that there was a maintenance issue with the seats in the row we'd selected and we had to be moved. This was on Spirit and they handled it well, finding seats for me & my then-2yo to be next to one another, but I was somewhat miffed about paying to be seated together and still having to juggle at the last minute.
My older kids would probably have been okay on their own from about 6yo because they just bury their noses in a book or their Leapster (when they were younger) or Nintendo DS (now) for the duration of the flight. But for a longer flight - we haven't gone anywhere further than 3ish hrs - or a younger child I'd do whatever I could to make sure I was at least nearby.
