Found old safe in my basement

okay, you all have me hooked!! I should be cleaning, making a pot of sauce and various other things. But, here I sit, hooked on this thread! :surfweb:

I have been going through all of my research & I have some ?'s that will sound VERY strange to you-I realize this but it has to do with dating/time period & the type of lock. (Non-tumblers that have not been taken care of will tend to sound like a broken rolling tumbler-but they are handled very differently.)
1.)On the door hinges, is there a little acorn or do they just look like old hinges? (Earlier pieces did not have the acorns.)
2.)May need a flashlight for this next question. When you look through the attempted drill-in, do you see metal? If so, is it dark grey (blackish) and kinda rough feeling looking? Shiny black? Or a dull flat grayish color? (Has to do with the type of metal plating that was used as a lock stabilizer).
3.)On the lock, itself-can you see numbers/number letter combo or a manufacturer (Yale is WWII era, for example)
4.) The wood outer casing is a give-away that it is prior to WWII. Is there anyway to see under the safe or behind it (lower corner (usually left), right above the molding to see if there is a very small set of numbers?

You have made my day.

I am so glad to have made your day!!! :goodvibes

Unfortunately I am at work and will be until about 6:00 tonight. I will definately print this off and go down and see what answers I can get for you. Unfortunately, they put this thing in a corner that as you can tell from the pic has a wall that actually comes in front of the door of the safe. My husband cant' move it, but I can try to get some of the answers for you tonight and I will definately post back this evening for sure.

Am I the only one thinking you might not want to know what's in it? Hoffa anyone .......... just sayin

:lmao:

OK, I admit it. When another poster mentioned how much fun it was to speculate about their aunt's safe as children, I started wondering. Hoffa came to mind. The Ark of the Covenant? The Heart of the Ocean? C'mon, y'all!

What could be in there?

:rotfl2: That was my first thought as well. And I have to tell ya, the fact that c4a is getting so excited is making me excited as well. I can't wait to see....and frankly, Monday is a looooooong time to wait. Just sayin'

Hmmm. Perhaps this is the reason my dh says he doesn't care where I work as long as it isn't a bank.:confused3

And to the pp who posted those pics(link) of an original J.Baum World War II era "middi-boy"...thank you. MERCY!! He is a beaut! :thumbsup2
(I am pitiful...some have porn...I have pics. of antique safes.:lmao: At least, I admit I have a problem. )

Took a second look at your photo...

I was trying to assess the condition of the safe and the area around the safe. It looks like there is some kind of water damage to it, at least on the front (left & right sides). Is the damage surface-only or is it right down to the metal? That would be a shame, the artwork looks gorgeous. The water damage seems to have happened in its present site, as there seem to be old water-stains on the walls around the safe.

And, am I wrong or did someone build walls AROUND the safe itself? Why in the world would someone do that? It almost looks like the safe-door wouldn't have opened all the way because there's a wall in the way!

agnes!

Dont you feel a sore throat coming on??? You should REALLY go home, sick...

(and get the locksmith over, pronto!) :woohoo:

Thats it. First he 'forgets' about the potential fortune sitting in your basement, and now he says it's not worth anything?

Alright - go here: LegalZoom.com - file for divorce. Me and other DIS'ers will come by and help you through this trying time (and bust the safe open)

:rolleyes1 :dance3:

:thumbsup2

I wonder if a previous owner of the home couldn't open the safe, and it was too heavy to move so they just built around it? :confused3

Man the suspense is killin me! I just hope this isn't like the thread about the neighbors sneaking around and throwing bags in the window of the their own home...the OP for that thread never came back :scared1:

OMG! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

You just got yourself a first class ticket to the Walt Suite, IMO!

Wow, this is quite exciting! My grandmother had one of these safes, I believe it was smaller though, that was given to her as a wedding present in the 1920's. The oldest child got it when she passed. I had no idea it was worth money- they use is as an armoire-but it is still completely attached and the door and lock is still on it. I am suprised they never took it to an antique dealer.

OP, I can't wait to hear what is inside!
