Is anyone nervous about upcoming trips or the effects this could have on us? I’m not trying to start a political debate .. just wondering how everyone is feeling .
my 17 yr old just asked me if he as a dual citizen could be drafted . I’ve never worried about this until now ..

There won't be a draft. We have more than enough troops right now.

In general, the US is safe. Those with military affiliations and who live or work on military bases need to exercise greater caution due to being targets.

My husband and I were just discussing this. We plan to travel in the US this summer, and were wondering whether we should just plan to stick to Canada. Not just security reasons, but - how bad is this going to hit the economy, affect exchange rates, gas prices etc...

In general, yes, this makes us nervous. WW3 isn't in anyone's interest, and I like to think they all know that. But that also doesn't mean things might not get messy for awhile.

Oh John.. if only....

Thanks, realistically I know the danger is small but I can't help but think if this escalates further they will start asking for people to go. He would be one of the first to volunteer.

They don't get asked to go. Their unit as a whole gets activated and ordered to deploy. It is a very real possibility. Reservists are used frequently for conflicts overseas, so you should all mentally prepare for the possibility. I hope he doesn't have to go for all your sakes.

I don’t think changing the channel and ignoring what’s happening is beneficial.

i have children that learn about war and the draft in school and are asking real questions .

My 17 yr olds hockey team actually were looking up at their tournament if DC was hit by a weapon if NYC was hit what our implications would be . Kids are worrying it’s my job as a parent to calm their fears but be aware.

Sitting rather close to the beltway in Washington DC has its privileges...
1. Don't worry about the draft.
2. Change the channel.

No draft. We no linger have a draft in this country. Conscription requires an act of Congress and you see how much work they get done.
In terms of fuel prices, the US is less dependent in foreign oil than it used to be. We also have a production glut, keeping prices low. Crude is up on the exchange, but don’t expect radical increases over this newest skirmish. To theCanadians who are worried, your fuel prices will likely be higher than ours.

This newest BS is just that and the enemy is no different. We have been fighting proxy wars with Iran for years. Nothing has changed. Theres not going to be a war in the sense some of you are thinking.

on a related note. We have so much access to information these days. Certainly better than when I was a teenager (Gulf 1), yet todays teens and young adults seem to be starving for actual knowledge and valid information. Maybe it's the 24 hour news cycle, the cyclical reinforcement of the “Chicken Little” narrative by the blind leading the blind, with confidence and conviction, in the social media fantasyland, or maybe schools just stopped requiring civics classes to teach kids civics. Maybe all of it, but everyone needs to chill out. This week, is no different than last week or last year when it comes to conflict with Iran.

I encourage you and your kids to learn about the draft, government, and war. I do not encourage you to use the television to do such. It’s television’s job to keep you watching television. They do that by instilling fear where there needn’t be fear, often with exaggeration and outright lies. This is true no matter which political leanings you have. Recognize when your feelings are being manipulated.
Don’t forget to teach your kids about propaganda.

We did our three years in the US and it opened all our eyes about how different news media slants the news depending upon what politics affiliations they have . To us Canadian news was the news not sifting through propaganda . Thanks for your thoughts tho. I’m not as ignorant to not educate myself or my children and run around yelling the sky is falling but I do think it is something to be very aware of.

I in no way meant to start a political debate . I simply wondered if I was the only worried about the dollar, cost of gas, upcoming trips etc

Definitely not. I mentioned above, we will be watching closely, as we had a 10 day US trip planned this summer, but if the gas starts sky rocketing, or the dollar falling, we'll likely end up sticking within Canada.

Watch those internet sources as well. Any fool can add anything to the internet. Wikipedia and Youtube are not valid sources. Nor is a documentary on Netflix.

You realize some of us Canadians are highly educated right ? Kinda saying this tongue in cheek but kinda not.

I don’t think you started a political debate. I think all of the concerns raised here are valid (though some are very 1st world) regarding war.

LOLZ. And highly sensitive.

you realize large percentages of the population will believe anything on the internet, including or perhaps especially, the college educated. Go check out what college professors are saying on Reddit. Continual theme: Why do I have to explain to college seniors that Wikipedia is, still, not a valid source for citations. So yeah, the educated need to be told. This is the reason the fear response is running so high, despite access to resources. Despite the fact that information is readily available about the draft, the current generation is freaked out, crashed the Selective Service website this weekend, and one fool on IG thought blocking the US Army from his email would prevent him from being drafted. Thats right, morons, everywhere. People you would normally look at as logical, stable people people, acting like total assclowns because they read something on the internet. Then they post over and over and then those posts become the truth.

I’m sure Canada has access to the current trading price of barrel of light sweet crude, and the reasons its trading at that price, yet you came here to ask if anyone was worried, so either you too have been watching the news and spinning on bad info, or you came to fear monger. I sure hope you just needed a reminder that the news is also not a valid resource.
