Me - 29 - would be much more of a Disney nut if my family would just "get" it
My Dad - 58 - to be explained later
Austin - 5 - all-around great kid

My dad won a cruise from a travel show earlier this year and took a credit from the agency instead...and somehow it turned into us going to Disney. Now, my dad and I never got along when I was growing up...having grandkids has softened him quite a bit and we are closer to having a good relationship than I ever dreamed possible. He had a quadruple bypass in 1991 and has an implanted defibrilator and had another heart attack in the spring;we were told that his heart is too weak to do another bypass. Basically, he's living on borrowed time - though he's amazingly agile for all of his problems. He's got some arthritis in his back now, though, so walking is a big problem. This trip was to "bond"...time for Austin to be with his Papa and he and I to spend some time together.

We have been to Disney three times before this and on the Disney cruise once. Austin knows by now what he loves and he knew what was important to him. I also have a 2-year-old (a VERY difficult one) so I haven't been able to really enjoy our previous visits...so this time the goal was to take it slow, follow Austin's lead and just enjoy our time together.

We went with no real plans...a big departure for me - I'm one of those obsessive planning people.

11/29 - We arrive in Orlando at 8pm...the plan was for Austin to go to kindergarten before we left so I wouldn't feel THAT bad about taking him out of school. We left snowy, freezing Rochester, NY and were promptly met by Nasar from TTC in Orlando, who had a wonderful Towne Car with great "cushy" seats in the mighty pleasant Florida evening air. He was great!

I had called Dixie Landings the Monday before our trip, explaining that we needed a ground floor room as close to the food court as possible (me dad needs to take his medication with food, so he'd be walking there every morning). I called again the morning we left and they had given us a second floor room in Bldg. 14 - or we could have a ground floor in Bldg. 17. I took the closer one - and it was perfect...we could see the food court through the trees. Dixie Landings was great about this and were very understanding when I called - and when I explained that my dad is way too proud to ask for this in person. Our room was great!

I hope this turns out to be a wonderful bonding trip for you all. I can't wait to read more. :)

Thanks for sharing your trip with us.

Lisa :)
