Low Sodium Diet

My DH and I are planning a 40th Anniversary trip this Fall and I have to follow a low sodium diet because of my Menieres Disease (inner ear disease with bouts of vertigo). I was wondering if I could contact someone ahead of time to see what options they have or if they list sodium counts anywhere. I know you can talk to a chef at the sit down restaurants and they will work something out for you but I’m concerned with the time that would take and also just might want to do a lot of quick service. This isn’t a matter of calories that you can just burn off by all the walking but rather a health issue that causes problems if there’s too high of a sodium intake. I thought I read somewhere that you could get some sort of listing of foods. Thanks in advance!

You could start here and call WDW:

But I think that will just cover TS meals. My MIL is on a similar low sodium diet. It can be tough, especially at places like WDW. There really is no nutritional info posted for any QS or TS meals that I am aware of. I would start by using your past experience of eating out. It you know the sodium count of a lot of counter service meals outside Disney, this could help with WDW.

For example: If you look at the sodium count for a hamburger meal at three nonDisney restaurants, you could take the average and guesstimate what a meal at Disney will be. Past experience is a big help.

Of course this is just an educated guess. So be sure to fill up a lot on fresh leafy greens and fruit and lots of water The potassium in fresh produce, especially fruit can counter balance overages you might have in sodium. Make a list of high sodium items to avoid and a list of foods high in potassium to include. Carry high potassium foods, like raisins and dried apricots to snack on.

My DM can only have 600 mg of sodium a day and does great at Disney.
We pretty much do TS for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We can even eat at buffets and dinner shows. We find the CS are not that great. We stayed at POR in November and in the food court they could take care of her at breakfast the few mornings we ate there. We have found the chefs we have encountered over the years for her issue plus my DH’s allergies are absolutely wonderful.

All bread, baked goods and salad dressings, and of course CPG foods are loaded with sodium. That is a good place to start. Most meats at Disney are marinated in something usually high in sodium. You can call and have them make a notation on any TS dining you have. For QS, avoid what I mentioned and ask if a meal can be made w/o salt. Usually,it's not an issur. I switched to WFPB diet shortly before our last trip and was able to stick to that at Disney with no problem.

This is very helpful, thank you so much,

Thank you so much! We do eat out a lot normally so I should do ok. I’ve been relying on restaurant websites and healthy dining finder but wasn’t sure if WDW had information of their own. I just want to relax and have a few treats when I’m on vacation

Usually at the TS restaurants we have been to the chefs have told us they always have some type of meat that has not been marinated in anything. Don’t know if CS is the same. Not sure if you are interested but Mickey Bars are low in sodium so DM would have that as a treat most days during the trip.

we went last Dec. and I am on a low sodium diet and had little issues. I researched the menus and checked what the worst sodium levels were.
Then did some planning.
Followed the rules of the diet, ordered burgers with no condiments or american cheese, didn't order fries *saved money and salt). That brings down to wdw burgers to app 350-400 mg. Other options were to order the breast chicken strips not the nuggets, then took breading off saving salt there. At ts talked to chefs. At buffets avoided anything with breading. kept well below my 1000mg level

I'm on a low sodium diet and at every sit-down, the chef would come out and talk to me and make modifications and/or give advice as needed. My only problem was at the Plaza, where the chef spoke very heavily accented English, and didn't understand too well either. I had great difficulty talking to him or hearing him. I ended up with salad with no cheese and no salad dressing, not even any on the side. It tasted VERY plain. But I'm not sure if that's what he thought I'd asked for!

I’m also on a low sodium diet. We recently spent a week in the World, eating exclusively CS in the parks, water parks, and resort (POR). Everyone was unbelievably attentive. From a dietary perspective, this was my most relaxed vacation in years. You simply need to ask; the should have an allergy trained specialist at every location, and I was told they are trained for sodium management as well.
