My dear Fellow DVC Members,

I have been a DVC member for less than 3 years (with 2 addictive add-ons already) and I have always been a very good boy - very concervative, never make waves, don't try anything new, and I keep my DVC points to my 5 (now 6 with AKV) Disneyworld resorts.

But suddenly in February, I apparently became possesed by the fantastic and incredible powers of DVC membership. I started writing threads asking questions about using my membership to the max - to really getting into bed with the DVC "sheet." I was inspired by infinitely intellegent responses from the likes of DVC mega-moguls including the Wonderful "WebmasterDoc" & the Dynamic "Dean" and Jumpin "JimC". Thanks to all you gentlemen for your fantastic advice & inspiration because here's what happened to me in February.

First, I rented my first excess DVC points overnight on the DVC rental boards. My very first thread generated 16 responses over the weekend. I asked and easily received 11 per point - one guy even wrote back offering me 12 per point. I refused his offer because I remained loyal to an earlier bid @ $11 from what appears to be one of the nicest guys in the world. It was a totally mutually beneficial agreement (with signed contract & certified checks) from a first time renter.

But here's the best part. I then decided to try my luck with an Interval International exchange during February 2008 (totally prime time) for 7 nights in Aruba (1 bedroom) for 160 measily DVC points on. Exactly 1 week later, my search was confirmed for a 1 bedroom villa at the Marriott Renaissance Aruba Resort and Casino during Valentine's week! I'm so estatic that I haven't even told my wife because I'm hoping she finds out from this thread!

My point is this. For all my fellow DVC members who havn't taken advantage of a vacation exchange through DVC's HUGE trading power with Interval International from the World Passport collection, give it a shot. Yes, it's true - it cost a wopping $75 if they match your search request - but for $75 and 160 points for 7 NIGHTS in a Marriott in Aruba in February do you think I'm complaining? Be daring - you only live once - expand you horizons - they offer exchanges THROUGHOUT THE WORLD! A one bedroom is 160 points and a 2 bdroom is 270 point (plus the measily $75 exchange fee of course).

Yes, my search was for any week during Feb 2008 and yes, I did allow them to do the search from 15 different Carribean Resorts (including all 9 from Aruba) which I viewed from the www.dvcmember.com website (Go to "Resorts & Member Getaway" section, then click on "World Passport Collection," then click on "Interval International Exchanges" then click on "view" list) . And yes, maybe I got lucky - but my point is that you can get lucky too!

God bless DVC! God bless the World Passport collection with Interval Internatinal! God bless these threads! God bless WebmasterDoc and Dean & JimC! God bless Tiny Tim! God bless us all, everyone! I'M GOING TO ARUBA ! ! ! !
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Best wishes,
Dave

Congrats! You give me hope! DH and I definitely want to give Aruba a try and some other places, too after our 2 upcoming WDW trips. We just bought and I see many quality vacations in our future, too -- not just WDW.

I hope you do a trip report on this place b/c it's on our list to go.

Congrats! and Thank you!

(Thanks for posting ... and thanks for making an outbound exchange. I'm watching the other side for an inbound exchange. Your transaction will hopefully satisfy someone on II's list ahead of me ...)

Glad everything worked out for you. My guess is your flexibility played a big part in your success.

This is kind of a big deal....seems to me you'd get a little more excited about it! :woohoo:

Congrats!!!

This is something DH & I have considered doing. Do you mind me asking a couple of questions? Do the points change for certain times of year or is it always 160 pts for 1 bedroom? Can you only book by the week or can you book 4 or 5 nights at a time? Thanks

Enjoy your trip!!!

Congrats Dave! I'm sure you'll have a great time. Be sure to give us a review when you return!

Congrats on such an awesome trade!

I enjoyed your post; it reminded me DVC is about vacationing YOUR way. DSis is putting in a request for Hawaii summer of 2008 or 2009. Hope she has your luck.

I BELIEVE it's 160 points throughout the year and Interval international is always 7 days (Fri/Sat/Sun thru Fri/Sat/Sun depending on the resort). But I remember reading something about 4 or 5 day vacations thru Buena Vista Trading Company which is also part of the World Passport Collection.

Simply call Member Services to find out for sure. When you get the recording, press 3 like you always do but on the 2nd prompt press 2 to speak to a World Passport Exchange person - they are very, very nice!

Best wishes for success on your search - just offer a range of several weeks from a dozen or so hotels and you should do just fine! The earlier you call in advance, the better - you call request a search up to 2 YEARS in advance!

Best wishes,
Dave

Good for you on your successful rental and trade thru II!!!

Glad to see DVC working to its potential!!

Well Dave,

Aruba. A prime week. Nabbed it. Easy to see. Gems get gems!!!!

Have a wonderful, wonderful time.

Lisa

:thumbsup2 Congratulations!!!!

We are hoping to do a trade also. I think the 160 points is an Awesome deal for some of the places that are offered. We have a few here in Texas we could use and we are looking at Hawaii.

Cant wait to hear what Aruba is like! We are cruising there next August on the DCL Repo!

You should send your post to DVC!! They were campaigning hard on the Member Cruise to get members to give the II trades a try. They gave away several weeks. We dont talk alot about the trades on the board but stories like yours will give others information and hope!:wizard:

Great news! Congratulations! We visited Aruba on our honeymoon & hope to use II to go back one day...

Question - since you can start looking for a ressie 2 yrs. out - can you borrow ahead on your points for II trades like you can for the DCL cruises or do they have to be coming from your current use year?!

All I can say is WOW.....can't wait, and thank you David for always checking into all of the options! Also thank you to all of the Dis Board,DVC, and disney personnel who have inspired my dear husband to go for it! I've got the passport.....can't wait to go!

Love to my Dear Husband, Dave!

I asked this exact same question and Member Services told me they had "special flexibility" when a search is matched far in advance. First of all, you're points aren't used until you accept a match. In my case (Aruba in feb 2008), they are using points from my Feb 2008 use year.

While Member Services could not get very specific with me because I did not have a "match" when I asked the question, they implied that there is certainly "extra flexibility" with Interval International exchanges. Their attitude was "Don't worry about it - we'll take care of where the points come from when the time comes." They were really great about everything!

Best wishes for success in your search,
Dave

I am very interested in Aruba also. Can you tell me how you did this? Did you go through Member Services?

That is good to hear that you got a trade. My mom became a DVC member in November. She took the option for extra points so she would have enough points to go to Portugal this summer on the exchange. She put in a request for any week this summer and any resort in portugal. She has yet to hear anything. Her guide told her last week that she is at the top of the list. She is starting to get worried because she hasn't heard anything and needs to plan the airfare and everything. She is going to be really unhappy if it doesn't come through. I am getting worried for her too. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Pabien! (Congratulations in native language) :)

Here is where you are going Aruba Renaissance

Now start searching for airfare. The cheap seats go quickly during high season. Remember you will need passports and that you clear customs to come home in Aruba. So leave two hours for that process in addition to the normal check-in time. Mid-day the airport gets busy and the lines can get very long.

Aruba Tourism site is a great place to learn about the island, its heritage, culture and all there is to do.

Local weather won't change much but in case you need to check to be sure.

If you rent a car check out the local rentals, they tend to have the best deals.

Also try to get to the Marriott Stellaris for a dinner at Simply Fish. You dine on the beach, just feet from the waves and enjoying the sunset in front of you.

Enjoy!
