regarding what's in the pipes:

My best guess is that the top pipe is ketchup; and the middle is mustard. the bottom one has a mix of soy oil and lemon juice, it seems, but I can't tell you what it is.

The fuel oil take that burned on the dock at Gibraltar a few months ago. taken from our veranda on the magic when on the WBTA this year.

Not bad - you go 2 out of 3.
The McDonald's clue might help you with the third.
It's the chemical formulas for ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise!

This is from last year. It took several tries because other than the Christmas lights on the trees, there was zero lighting on this topiary.

If I had to guess, flash was set to slow shutter. A long enough exposure to properly expose the background but the flash fires during the shot to properly expose the face. Think of it as a fill flash for night use.

What settings did you use on this photo to get such great exposure on his face, but not lose the background? Thanks! And great pics!

I used my flash with a flash diffuser and a 50mm lens set to F2.2 and right place at the right time.
