Spinoff: what were your best hotel breakfasts?

Hi, yes we're an adoptive family. We were there in 2000 to bring our daughter home and again in 2010 for a homeland tour. It really is an incredible hotel.

Nice to "meet" you! We were there in 2005. I have been seeing many of our friends taking homeland trips lately and they look absolutely amazing, we'd love to take DD some day

The White Swan Hotel in Guangzhou China. It offers an gourmet international selection. It was fascinating to see and try items from all over the world.

Got curious and tried to find pictures.

Some of the stuff would never pass a health inspection (like having raw meat right on buffet counter next to condiments) in the US though, but I guess it's different there.

I've been to China a few times, and some of the practices are interesting. I walked into a Walmart and saw meat for sale where it was just pieces on ice and the customer had to select and bag the meat.

Nice to meet you as well. The homeland tour was amazing. We got to see dd's foster family again and show her so many wonderful places.

I don't remember raw meat on the buffet but there were raw eggs. I grabbed one thinking they were hard boiled and was very surprised.

There definitely are different standards in different countries.

Heck, we were just in London and grocery stores there have eggs on unrefrigerated shelves. I think they were in the aisle with bread.

Raw eggs might be used as a condiment. I've seen it myself where it's cracked open and then used a dipping sauce mixed with other stuff like green onions, cilantro, soy sauce, chilis, etc.

And here's a few photos I found. Just seeing meat like this isn't all that shocking to anyone who's been to a full-service butcher or even just being in a supermarket, but having it out where the customers can handle it is something else. I have seen fish markets in the US where customers can access fish on ice, but often there are signs saying that customers shouldn't handle it and should ask for help from an employee. However, in China customers are freely handling raw meat with their bare hands.

I've actually been to American Chinatowns where I went to buy similar meats. They were always behind the counter or in a refrigerated case. They were often even blocked by a sheet of plexiglas to keep customers from directly touching the raw meat. The butcher still handed the meat in a plastic bag, but they certainly were doing something to keep customers from directly touching the meat.

The Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego and the Hyatt Huntington Beach had really good buffets. We got them for free as part of an AAA offer on the Hyatt website. The best was the Sunday brunch at the Hotel Del Coronado as it should be for the price they charge:thumbsup2

Crowne Plaza Hotel buffet Niagara Falls Ontario, Canada or Holiday Inn Express & *Conference Centre Barrie Ontario, Canada

*Their buffet is to die for!

Embassy Suites for sure!! Made to order omelettes in the morning... So delicious

We stayed at an Embassy Suites, Charleston Airport & Convention Center, on our mini-vacation last December. They had a great breakfast buffet, with an egg station. It was included in the price of the room.

Plus they did a snack buffet/drinks reception at night that was good. Snack mix, chips and salsa, a couple hot items and drinks for free (well liquor, not top shelf though....great rum punch); again included in the room price. It was clean, and well maintained.

The Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok. Unlike anything I've experienced anywhere else. They had food from all over the world, all amazing. And the fresh juices.... I can hardly find the words.
I doubt I'll ever make it back there, but it was truly amazing!

I must say, all the asian hotels that ive been to have some pretty uber yummy breakfast.

In america, the best meals i was having was in Fairbanks, Alaska at a Hampton Inn. They were serving like full breakfast. the hotel was just some 3 star hotel but the breakfast was pretty good! we stayed at a Hilton in Anchorage. was expecting a decent breakfast but it was crap!

I stayed at an Ayers Hotel & Spa in Moreno Valley, California, back in 2014 while on a business trip. I got a voucher for free breakfasts.

Made to order omelets with all kinds of meats, cheeses and vegetables. Bacon, link and patty sausage, plus french toast, waffles, and other items.

It definitely beat the standard hotel breakfast. And yes, I ate my fill each morning!

The Grand Mark Hotel in Prague. Made to order eggs of any kind, full breakfast menu plus amazing buffet. It was also a beautiful dining room and hotel.

Well not counting paid breakfasts, we had one with a nice fruit spread, some waffles and such at a Hampton in Florida that was really good. Some of those Hampton Inn's serve great freebie. Others Meh. We've also had Meh freebies at more expensive places too. It just depends on the place.
Counting the paid ones probably one in Lake Tahoe. Dirt cheap. Something like $5. great spread. All kinds of things including cold smoked Salmon and the like. By the way those aren't $5 any more. HAHA.

Lately we've been staying at Embassy Suites and really enjoying their included breakfast. Their nightly 'cocktail reception' is appreciated too.

BEST breakfast? Well, it is not so much a breakfast as it is a brunch but when we stayed on Mackinac Island we went to the brunch at the GRAND HOTEL.

Now we did not stay there but that was the most amazing spread ever.

The legendary Grand Luncheon Buffet is a distinct highlight of the Grand Hotel experience. It features hot and cold entrees, seafood, salad, fresh fruit, cheeses, a selection of meats, and desserts baked fresh daily. It is served in the Main Dining Roomfrom noon until 2:00 p.m. daily. Grand Luncheon Buffet has been awarded a 2016 Certificate of Excellence by TripAdvisor.

I had something like a $5 all you can eat breakfast buffet at this downtown Vegas place called the California Hotel and Casino. This place primarily serves a clientele visiting from Hawaii. They have a pretty nice casual Hawaiian place upstairs with typical Hawaiian comfort food like Spam musubi and plate lunches. However, the buffet was really cheap and was often included in packages that came with coupons. It was a typical buffet mixed with Hawaiian staples like Portuguese sausage. However, it didn't included grilled Spam. If it did I'm thinking that a lot of customers would have been eating up $15 worth of Spam for one breakfast.

Our all-time favorite would be the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan. Breakfast was included with the stay (as was dinner the night before) and the food for both meals was outstanding.

We've also enjoyed breakfast at the Embassy Suites in several locations.

Best hotel breakfast I ever had was room service at the Sutton Place in Vancouver, BC. To this day I have not found any bitter orange marmalade to compare to theirs...
