Surprise Upgrades?

I always just book a standard room anywhere I stay and have often been upgraded to a water view, I have actually be upgraded a few times at YC to a room that looks right at the lake and BW. Most of the view upgrades I get are when I'm solo, I suspect the YC one was because that room had a single king bed and someone needed two queen beds. My son and I were once upgrade to concierge at CR when we booked standard.

Ordinarily, I have never received more than I have booked/paid for, including the Buick Savanna at AKL (aka the parking lot), and if you read enough of these threads, you will start to think Disney likes everybody else better than you! Once, however, we arrived late (definitely after 8pm) at the GF and landed in a theme park view room.

About three years ago we book a studio at BCV. Waiting for room ready text, waiting , waiting. Happen to be looking at my tablet, I see on DVC website we have a 1 bedroom. No, no, no, how did I mess this up, I'd never book a 1 bedroom just for the two of us. Somewhat freaking out, I go over to CM and find out we had been given an upgrade. No reason given. It was for three nights.

Buick Savanna. That's funny.

Would love to hear from anyone who has had a surprise upgrade when checking in at your WDW Resort. I had one a few years ago where I was upgraded from a standard pool view room to a Savannah room at AKL. We arrived super late at night and we didn't even realize until we opened the curtains the next morning and saw animals only a few feet away, LOL.
We were upgraded to lagoon view at the Yacht Club.

We have been going for over 20 years now and mainly always got what we paid for. However we took our nephew a few years ago and had booked a room at CSR (in the business section they used to have), when we opened our room there was only 1 king size bed for the 4 of us! That was until we saw we had connecting rooms, as the connecting door was open, we had 2 rooms and even better 2 bathrooms. It was brilliant. They never said anything at check in though.

The other year we had booked WL for 1 night as a treat and got a courtyard room. That was really something to come out of the room and see the beautiful lobby. You could also see the fireworks from the balcony through the trees. So thank you to someone for these lovely surprises.

On our last trip in March I had booked a standard room at the BWI because our flight was getting in pretty late and then we planned on moving to the CL at the BWI for the rest of the trip. While sitting in the airport I got the room ready text and my husband noted that it looked like a CL room, and it was!

On an earlier trip we had booked the Swan for two nights before again moving to the BWI CL for the rest of our trip. While waiting to check in we had a couple in front of us that was asking a lot of questions. I don't mean like one or two but over and over! It was really late and I was trying to be patient but I'm sure the CM could tell I was getting frustrated! When they finally finished and it was our turn she was apologetic and gave us a free up grade to a room with a balcony.

My stepson was just recently upgraded from a standard view at the BWI to a BWI CL room.

By far the best upgrade we ever received was back in 1999. We had a family vacation with 9 of us going and had booked 2 rooms in the main building of the GF. When we arrived we were upgraded to a three bedroom suite on the 5 floor of the Royal Palm Club!! So unexpected and a wonderful set of rooms. Looking back at this I am surprised at the amount of upgrades we have received over the years.

One time in about 15 stays. Had one night at AKL before 6 nights at BC. Booked the cheapest club level room, were upgraded to a 1 bedroom suite. They seemed to be at capacity and I think being there for just one night helped.

We were upgraded on our honeymoon in 2006. We had booked a standard king room at CSR and were upgraded to a Casitas one bedroom king suite (I think that’s what it was, based on looking at Disney’s current site)! It was as big as our apartment!

We were also upgraded at CSR when we went back in 2011. We had booked standard king room and were “traveling with” my husband’s brother, sister-in-law and nephew. At check-in (we got in first- we were coming from MA, they were coming from MN), I double checked that it was noted we were traveling together and would like to be near each other. Apparently, we had ended up nowhere near each other so they did some shuffling around and we were both upgraded to Casitas 1, which was a preferred room and so convenient to everything we needed (our daughter was only 6 months and nephew was 2.5 and we were traveling in January, so proximity to pool wasn’t a big issue).

About 3 years ago we had a 3 night stay booked at POP. I had noticed on the website that it was completely booked for that weekend so I wondered if we might get an upgrade, especially since I hadn’t gotten a text with our room number. Sure enough, they moved us to a Ft. Wilderness cabin. The cast member who checked us in had never seen that happen before and was very excited. We enjoyed the cabin and were thankful for the opportunity!

I love pixie dust stories like these - keep them coming!
The best upgrade we’ve received was at POR. We booked a standard view, Royal room and were upgraded to a beautiful river view, right on the corner. It was an awesome surprise!

Booked a studio at VWL 3 years ago

Arrived at check in and was pleasantly surprised to be upgraded to 2BR villa

Last June, arrived at AKL by car to be personally met by a CM that greeted me by name and escorted us to the Club Lounge. The standard view HA room I booked was not available so the upgraded us to 2 rooms (connecting) with Savannah Club Level.e

it was the Disney magic I needed as I was dreading the trip in the weeks leading up to that vacation. I had no problem spending more down time than normal at the resort.

Love hearing about these stories. We never really got upgraded except at French Quarter to a garden view from standard if that counts. But, we always get really good rooms - like corner rooms and the closest room in our category to the main building etc. we don’t make many requests - if any- and we have always gotten perfect rooms. Never a complaint. We only stayed deluxe once - Poly our first trip 11 years ago when it was almost affordable. We used to love business class at CS. Now we are relegated to mostly value and stay at Pop. Hopefully we aren’t priced out of that quite yet.

For those that have gotten upgrades, do you make specific room requests (i.e. room number), general requests (i.e. close to transportation), or no requests?
