Things you were stunned that people didn't know?

I had a friend who thought you could open the windows on a jet plane.

I am embarrassed to admit that up until a few years ago I could never understand why people went to turkey shoots. I thought they really shot at live turkeys.....not that you won a frozen turkey if you had the best marksmanship!o_O

Ummmmm......down here there's a ranch that has one and it IS live turkeys.....but we also have varmint round-up fundraisers.

At the winery tasting wine, the wine isn't going to be in the glass long enough to make a difference. But in a dinner situation, it will. But yes, typically red wines are usually served in glasses with larger bowls. That's to allow the bolder aroma to come forth. White wine glasses typically have smaller bowls and the wine will stay chilled longer. But a lot of places don't distinguish.
I have been to wineries where they give you a fresh glass when you switch from whites to reds, and other wineries that just rinse out the glass with water. The two I went to today did neither.

When Mary Tyler Moore died I was beyond shocked at the number of people I worked with who had no clue who she was. I get that the younger generation may not know the ones that I could be their mother generation but there was a woman 4 years younger than me who had no clue

I also had to explain to my older cousin, who tis the smartest person in the room just ask him, what hospice was

I used to be a special educator. One of my co-workers, a general education teacher, was telling me about an interaction they had with one of my students, who they didn't happen teach. I needed to know which student so I could follow up, but the description they were giving me (girl, yay high, glasses, shoulder length blond hair . . . ) could have been 2 of my students. Finally, I asked "Did they have Down syndrome?" The person looked really confused, and seemed to have no idea what my question meant.

I am surprised by the amount of people who do not know what you are asking if you ask them for their mother's maiden name.
I've never heard of any one not knowing the meaning of that but got to thinking that many the mothers of many younger people might not have a maiden name. So many have children out of wedlock

>:(
Everyday. I admit to being pretty dumb about "around the house stuff" but the things people don't know about the world astound me on the reg. Its like those Hufflepuff kids who can't read at the airport that a line is Pre-check, Business Select or First class only and lose it when they get sent to the regular line. I could have an entire list of just crap I see in an airport on this list. Liquids? Laptops? Shoes? Ugh.

What have you got against Hufflepuffs, huh?

Sincerely, a badger with a double Honours degree
:P

I was shocked that some people not only didn't know you could get some cars without power windows, but also, they had never seen a car with manual crank windows.

My boss (who could absolutely afford a new car!) drives 2 old bombs with manual crank windows. I've said that at least his grandchildren will understand what people mean when they talk about 'winding down the windows'!

In Jamaica we had a couple of people who genuinely didn't know and didn't understand that our seasons in Australia were the opposite to theirs.

I met some people from Michigan who insisted that the US was ahead of Australia time-wise; we were talking about Christmas and they said 'oh, but Santa comes to us first of course'.

And then there's of course the people who think we all live in the middle of nowhere and have kangaroos hopping down the street!

I'm also surprised as a linguistics major who specialised in sociolinguistics that so many people don't realise that language variation is a thing - i.e. that people from different places, socioeconomic groups, races, nationalities, ages, etc. use language differently and that just because someone uses language differently to you doesn't necessarily mean that they're 'wrong'.

Ummm, yeah....I was well into my 30's before I found out about the whole pickle/cucumber thing also. In my defense, I don't enjoy either. :rolleyes1

One April Fool's Day I was tricked into believing that they were rolling out new jet planes with glass bottoms. Whoops...

Doesn't every mother have a maiden name? The maiden name would be the one you were born with. So even a single mother has a maiden name... it's the same as her current name.
