What are you doing differnt to save gas money

we traded in our tundra for a tacoma back in february...helped with gas a lot

plus, i don't drive the trans am as much on the weekends...it does need exercise though;)

I'm working from home more often. I actually prefer going to the office (which is only 9 miles away) but a round trip nearly is a gallon of gas. It's a little tougher here in the summer time with the kids at home but they've learned well that I'm not to be bothered so it's worked out.

Less than a year ago I was working downtown (I'm in the 'burbs) and it was 23 miles one way. Back then a tank lasted 5 work-days plus no work-from-home option.

BTW, I am officially on my lunch break posting this message. :thumbsup2 :surfweb:

That would be nice to have a work from home option, especially in the summer with the kids. Although I wouldn't get much done with all this time I keep spending here.:surfweb:

I work from home but its a tough balancing act with work, kids, house and DIS BOARDS!

I pretend to work from home, but heck, it's really just swimming, the kid, my board and this darned place!

We combine all of our errands and shopping mapped out before we go and use the 1500 instead of the 2500.

I also map out Franks work schedule daily.

What do you do, for work I mean? :)

I implement software systems for small/medium size businesses. It's all ERP online software, so I do it all from home. Very little travel. Works out good since I still have 2 little ones who are not in school yet and one out for the summer!

But back to the good stuff...KUNGALOOSH, golf carts and family fun at the Fort! :thumbsup2

Well we don't have the option of leaving the diesel at home because I got the DW one to, before diesel got so high:headache: . We live in a small town and use to we would drive 60 miles one way just to go eat on the weekend. Not so much anymore.

I try to save fuel cost by bumming as many rides from my neighbors as I can to my work. :thumbsup2
They get a little cranky when I strap a bunch of scafolding to the top of their Escort.

We try to cut down on errands, and I've found that I can get about 1 to 2 more mpg in the truck on the highway if I keep the speed at 65 or so. Biggest mileage saver is to adjust the time I commute so I'm not in traffic that keeps going from 50 to 70 on the highway. I've done as well as 19.5 mpg on highway driving with my truck (not great compared to cars, but how many mpg would a Prius get trying to tow my trailer to the Fort?)

I'm lucky that my work has been very flexible, allowing me to work from home some days. As an environmental consulting firm, they actually have an annual challenge to see which office can conserve the most gas by carpooling, finding ways to work from home, riding a bike to work, etc. There are prizes involved as well.

I live 11 miles from my office & THD (2nd job) is less than a mile away from the office. I'm fortunate to be able to coordinate my office hours around my Home Depot schedule so my commute is dual purpose, and not making any extra trips. There's a Publix & Winn Dixie on my commute route, so I do all my shopping on my way home from work. It's a tough adjustment because before gas got so outta sight, I never thought twice about hopping in the Explorer & going to Publix for just a few items. I think twice now.

My Explorer is a 1997 with 153+K miles on it, and thankfully, has been a dream vehicle. It gets 18MPH city driving & 22MPH on the highway - and always has since the day we bought it in Aug 1996. It doesn't burn oil and considering it's a V-8, I'm very happy with the mileage. DH drives a 2006 Lincoln Zephyr with a V-6, and his gas mileage isn't a whole lot better than my Explorer.

I've researched buying a new vehicle,,,, but there aren't any out there that get that much better mileage than my Explorer. I haven't been able to justify spending the $25K or more it would take to buy a new vehicle only to gain an additional 2-7MGH. I can buy a lot of gas for what it would cost me to upgrade to a new vehicle.

IMHO...there is no reason engines can't be redesigned to get 70-80MPH and still allow for some comfort creatures - like a decent ride, A/C, and power everything.

Two of my neighbors have Smart Cars, and while they are unique, the mileage received for the size of the vehicle is very poor. They also ride like a bucket of bolts.

I've fleetingly entertained getting a scooter, but for several reasons, I won't. Mainly the weather here in Central Fla is too unpredictable and I won't wear a rain suit...too uncomfortable. Secondly...we have a LOT of idiot drivers that pull out in front of me when I drive my truck. Imagine if I were on a scooter??? I'd be squashed within a week!!

The local fellow who owns the Fox Pizza has a Smart Car.
I'm still trying to figure out if he has to pedal that thing or does it really have some kinda engine in it ?!?!?!?And where in the world is the spare tire on that thing ?!?!?!

I agree with both these statements, saw an article recently about advising people to think twice before thinking a trade in from a truck to an "economy car" to save gas if you were doing so for the $$ only. Payback wasn't in the formula.

On the topic of mileage on small cars, I remember driving my mothers early 1980s Nissan sentra that would consistently get 45 mpg. Why is it that trucks (for the most part) have gotten such improvements in mileage ratings over the years and the little cars have not?

I'll loan you my scooter to see if that quote is accurate. No need to bring it back if you do get squashed. My only request is you have them otters riding with you when you drive it.:rotfl2: :rotfl2:

The instructions in the owners manual say if you get a flat, just pull into the closest Dunkin Donuts for a spare.

Ahh,, so What you are saying is ,technically, the Smart car could be used as a police patrol as well.:rotfl2:

I've really tried to limit my shopping to once weekly. Don't drive anywhere but to work (may stop for something at the grocery on the way home which helps twice as much for I always save when I do shopping solo...without DH and kids). We get gas at Sams AMAP. DH hasn't gotten the motorcycle up and running again yet as he's had other projects but that is something we're considering for the future. Unfortunately, he has a 40 mile commute to work (six days/week usually). He hasn't found a coworker to carpool with although I try to encourage it. I am still reeling from the price at the grocery store lately and not gas so much although of course that keeps going up. We've gone back to Walmart versus Sams for food products but next step may be Sav-A-Lot.
