This past year was pretty uneventful as far as life-changing moments go, but one that I'm hoping will be life-changing is that I attended my 50-year high school reunion, re-connected with a dear friend who connected to me to another dear friend with whom I'd completely lost contact over the 50 years. It turns out that Friend #2 is a published author, and when she learned through our catch-up e-mails that I had done some free-lance editing (college papers, articles for local magazines and newspapers), she asked if I would be willing to try editing her newest novel!
It was a far more intensive editing job than I had ever done, and I worried that perhaps I had been too critical. But she told me to look at EVERYTHING; spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, word appropriateness, continuity, dialog flow, fact-checking, EVERYTHING, and not to be afraid to tell her ANYTHING. So I did, and to my surprise, she was delighted with my work, incorporated ALL my changes, formally asked me to be her permanent editor, and asked if she could refer me to her writer friends!
So at the ripe old age of 68, I'm starting a new career.
