CNN live interview with Martin Savidge on Sunday, 30 March 2003:

Martin Savidge of CNN, embedded with the 1st Marine battalion, 1st Marine Division, was talking with 4 young Marines near his foxhole this morning live on CNN. He had been telling the story of how well the Marines had been looking out for and taking care of him since the war started. He went on to tell about the many hardships the Marines had endured since the war began and how they all look after one another.

He turned to the four and said he had cleared it with their commanders and they could use his video phone to call home. None of these Marines had been able to talk with their families for many weeks. The 19 year old Marine next to him asked Martin if he would allow his platoon sergeant to use his call to call his pregnant wife back home whom he had not been able to talk to in over a month. A stunned Savidge, who was visibly moved by the request, nodded his head - yes. The young Marine ran off to get the sergeant.

Savidge recovered after a few seconds and turned back to the three young Marines still sitting with him. He asked which one of them would like to call home first? The Marine closest to him responded with out a moments hesitation, "Sir, if is all the same to you we would like to call the parents of a buddy of ours. Lance Cpl Brian Buesing of Cedar Key, Florida, who was killed on the 23rd of March near Nasiriya. We would like to see how
his folks are doing and let them know their son died bravely."

At that Martin Savidge totally broke down and was unable to speak. All he could get out before signing off was, "Where do they get young men like this?"

I just read about this on another thread here and it made me teary all over again.

This was sent to me today by my son's Family Readiness Officer.

Just realized someone else had posted this same story - sorry for the duplication.

Tears what more can I say. How amazing our men/women are in so many ways!

WOW!! Now I am crying. That is such a great story, but man, I wish you put a caution note to "get kleenex before reading this"
::( : Thanks for sharing!!! Man this is a GREAT country filled with such pride.

Patty.. it deserves to be repeated again and again.. My husband sent it to me today from work...these are incredible young men....:)

I just showed it to my 17 year old son, and told him that nothing would make me prouder than for him to emulate these young men throughout life.

I agree with kejoda - this is not an aberration of human nature, it is the type of character that is bred in - supported by a culture of freedom (and the civic responsibilities that go along with it), free quality education (where you learn about civic history, government and its impact on global issues), and based (at least originally) on Christian principles.

Ours is not the only culture that can produce it, just one of the ones most likely to produce it in large numbers.

I've got tear too. You know I think the show on Fox has it all wrong. These are the true American Idol's.

OK - Where's the Kleenex box???? Wow - that was an outstanding story!! These brave men and women make me more proud by the day!!!

Wonderful young men, that were raised to have compassion and kindness for others. The parents of these young men need a pat on the back for raising such wonderful children.

I guess it's a good thing I'm not an embedded reporter. I'd be bawling all the time, they wouldn't ever get a coherent word from me. That was a great story, every person in American should read it.

WOW! I am speechless....what a wonderful article that really shows us how proud we should be of the men and women who are in the military.

Hey, I know better now.....I keep a box of kleenex on my computer armoire. Especially when I open one of Patty's posts!

This was truly such a selfless act to allow others to call home when I know that deep in their hearts they also wanted to speak to their loved ones. Those are true hero's!

I agree with Kejoda.

where do we get these young men? We get them in AMERICA!
