!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DCL Fleet Expansion in 2011 & 2012 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We were not really discussing that, I have done the DCL bus from the Disneyland resort, took an hour, and also done it myself, -45 mins & the local driver got lost. We were discussing San Pedro Vs San Diego

I do think the additional 90 miles to San Diego from Disneyland will be a negative for Disney when considering keeping a ship there.

I have to agree with you there. If there was reliable rapid transit to San Diego that would be one thing. But there is nothing reliable in CA. I've looked many times into taking amtrack to Anaheim from Modesto and they have never worked out the fact that once I get to Bakersfield I have to get off the train and board a bus to LA. If there is any sort of problem like that for Anaheim to SD then it would be a deal killer!

hi Steve

the California Surfliner runs from Santa Barbara to San Diego through LA and Anaheim. but since it doesn't own the tracks it runs on ut can take 6-7 hours to get to SD from Santa Barbara, and it has.
but we did pass a bill to build a high speed rail from San Diego to San Fransisco! but it won't make it to SD before 2025 or so.

Yep, I voted for that one. It's one of the few bond measures that I've ever supported. (Mostly because if done right It would pay for itself) But various special interests (without getting into the politics) have got that one all tied up in lawsuits. And I wonder if it will ever happen.

would one of those special interests be southwest airlines? because they aligned against high speed rail in texas, and killed it almost singlehandedly and we have yet to get it going since, even though it would be perfect here.

i am wondering if some of those special itinerary cruises mentioned by disney might originate further west in the gulf at some point, say new orleans or galveston. they would pick up quite a few more cruisers that just won't go to florida with ports so near by.

Actually, Believe it or not. The Special interest involved here are competeing private environmental protection agencies. Imagine that we have not one but two environmentalist groups working AGAINST mass transit. Something that would create far less pollution than the alternative. Oops, you got me started. Now that's not to say that either of those groups are not being funded by companies such as Southwest but I have no knowledge of that.

The special itinerary cruises that you speak of are very interesting. I'm hoping that Panama crossings are a regular thing as I really want to take one of these cruises. Since we know that the Wonder will be based in CA then any special itineraries would cause a repositioning.:cool1:

Me too!! I would love to see the Wonder do one way trips from LA to Port Canaveral and back. We haven't been able to do this itinerary in the past since the kids were in school - would love to see this happen during the summer!!

Have been off this thread for awhile per a first (and last) trip to Disneyland Paris. Before we even left there we were planning our next cruise! I was expecting an announcement in Nov. and hopefully Panama in May 2011. Now I see all of this may be much earlier! If I have to choose between Panama, Hawaii, and Alaska, I will spontaneously implode!

The problem IS IT IS LA traffic...you need to understand the traffic patterns around the LA metro area IS southern CAL. it extends from santa barbara in the northwest to the inland empire to san diego. especially on the weekends. the 5 is the main artery in socal.

karl

You are so right on this. The traffic is miserable. Road construction on the 5 is the worst and I don't see it being completed before 2011 the way things are going! Most of it is right before and after Disneyland. I can't see them putting a terminal in San Diego, but who knows......

I've lived in Orange County, and San Diego. Yes, traffic will always be an issue in Southern California. But weekend traffic between Disney and San Diego is usually not too much of an issue. When I lived in San Diego I drove up to Orange County frequently to visit family, and usually was within that 2 hr window that someone else mentioned.

Also, Disney is very familiar with San Diego. When I worked at the Walt Disney Travel Co. we booked hotel packages in San Diego, as well as Disneyland. The San Diego packages could be booked separately, but most families added it on to a Disneyland package. It's been awhile, so I'm not sure if they still offer these packages. But I'm sure they will add them as an option for pre and post cruise travelers.

On Disney's 3rd Quarter Earnings conference call they were answering questions on CapEx and mentioned that the new ships would be delivered starting late 2010. Will post links once they become available. Call is still ongoing live at this time.

Thank you for the update, I have always said the first will go into service in Feb 2011, so thats close, and delivery, is to DCL, doesn't mean in service, so the times look good.

Passporter twice in their new book say late January 2011, so again in a three month window there.

They said the current ships would welcome the first new ship at PC, then the Wonder go to LA, which is said to be very early Feb 2011.

I posted recently we will get a lot of information come out July and August, I was getting a little worried with just the DCL website upgrade, the menu changes, the information re 2012 in Europe was not to everyones expectations. I understood new info on the new ship would come out by end August, maybe its starting....

boy that was fast andrew
what do you do just hang out on this board??

More DCL Qs - direct question about ships in service and when they start generating revenue. Unfortunately, the analyst also asked about Toy Story vs. UP stuff. After babbling for several minutes they finally came back to the first question. They backpedaled a little saying the the Dream would be generating revenue around the 2nd qtr of 2011. In service somewhere between the end of 2010 and end of 2nd Qtr. He also mentioned that the "designs will be revealed in the fall" and they are "very unique." After the analyst suggested an analyst cruise, disney execs suggested they try the midwinter crossing in the North Atlantic.

And Karl your very fast back as well, now think of me, 12 days time, with a 7 night wine package all paid for in advance, wouldn't you like to join me at my table? to enjoy a glass or three???:thumbsup2:woohoo:

But to answer, I have various screens open on various websites, and been live for the last hour or so, offline in a few mins.

I get to play with a branch new fibre optic connection from sometime tomorrow! off old ADSL, So can answer even quicker.

I'll post snippets from the transcript when they are posted. But, I think my notes are fairly accurate. It IS hard to stay awake through these earnings calls! ;) All the info that I've seen you post still seems to be accurate. I am a little surprised though that "late 2010" came up at all - first from Senior VP/CFO Staggs, I think, and then again from ... Iger? I don't recognize these guys by voice and it's not always clear to me who is talking.

There should be very little time between delivery and in service. Again, the Celebrity Equinox was just delivered on July 16th and will start its first cruise on July 31st. The times you have posted are still looking good this far out, though.

BTW, in the press release, it mentioned that they made "a construction progress payment on two new cruise ships." That is not terribly significant except that it marks another small step and closer to completion.

If I were Disney, I would be pushing HARD to get the ship in service for the holidays, 2010. This is getting interesting.

Not liking the new website very much!!??
