women in your 30s or older - clothing question

I'm on a clothing buying strike because I haven't lost my pregnancy weight yet (UGH!), but once I do, here are the shops I like and I think are appropriate for my age (29): Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Gap Outlet, Banana Republic Outlet (my favorite!), Ann Taylor Loft, Limited, Express, and some things at Forever 21 if they aren't to short or skimpy.

My mom was that way too! So was/is my aunt (her sister) and my grandmother (her mom).

Too bad she didn't those genetics on to me LMAO. I got the genes from the other side of the family and have hips and a chest. Finding tops, coats, and blazers are so difficult because I have a tiny waist but a larger chest. So I have to buy to the larger part, which means the rest of the top is baggy.

DD is not built like me at all. I weighed 77 lbs. in 6th grade, and she weighs 90 in 5th. She is at a healthy weight for her age/height, and is athletic, so that weight doesn't worry me, but we are having the hardest time with clothes for her right now. Her legs are short, and mine are very long. DH is slightly taller than me, but when we stand side by side, my hips are much higher than his. She definitely takes after her dad in body size. Shopping is a nightmare right now. :rotfl:

I'm 29.

Moms who try to look like their teen daughters is definitely not a look I will ever be going for. Not saying that just buying A&E jeans puts a 40 year old in that category.

Get back to us on that one when you hit 40 ;)

I know why the sizes are different, but that doesn't matter. I buy what fits my body., and what looks good on it-no matter which department it is in. I have the body of a young lady/teen. Thank God I had kids that each left me with 10 extra pounds, or I would be even more difficult to fit. When I got pregnant with DD, I was 25 and 99 pounds, and that was all genetics, not diet/exercise. Some people are just built that way. I am one of them.

I am too :) I am 37 with 2 kids, and I still weigh 95-100 lbs. I have never been able to gain weight, no matter what I do. I cannot wear the "even" number Misses sizes, they are huge on me and look ridiculous. If I buy even a size small sweater or top that doesn't come from the Juniors' section, I swim in it. Sometimes I would like to be able to shop at other places, but it just doesn't work. I have a hard time finding clothes for work that fit me and fit in our dress code.

These threads are always somewhat amusing..

Why do women care so much about others? I get the Op's question, but not those who are so condescending, and/or judgy... Do men care what other men wear? and do they judge them as being too young an outfit? I never see it, or have never heard of it. Why do we have such issues ?

To answer the original question.. I LOVE the AE jeans, because I am petite and they fit perfectly with a little loose.. I can't stand them skin tight, and they just work for me.. I never was one to wear a brand name that was across my clothing, so no I don't wear those types of tops, but I think all the pictures are fantastic, and more power to anyone who wears what they like.:thumbsup2

I think it depends on the person. I don't shop at those stores. I am 37.

My sister is 35 and shops there. She is trying to relive her youth by dressing like her 17 year old daughter. She refuses to admit that she has aged past 25. I think my sister is what most people are thinking of when the think of women shopping in teen stores.

I will say that I hate clothes shopping. Nothing ever fits right.

I turn 40 this year. I have no desire to dress like a teenager.

Maybe, but a LOT of women start dressing younger about that age. My 42 year old wife would look like 60 if she dressed like she did in her 20's. The idea of being able to "pull it off" when you're younger doesn't apply exclusively to youthful looking clothes. It also applies to more conservative clothing that can make you look much older than you are.

Wow. Your 12 year old has the exact same shirt that I removed parts of to make it work better with my costume? That's convenient. :confused3 So plain blue v-neck shirts are strictly teenage-looking shirts? News to me.

I don't get it. Its a plain, blue v-neck shirt. That happens to look good on you. Nothing teenager-ish to me. I shop wherever. Gap, Abercrombie, AE, Nordstroms etc…..I'm in my 40's. If someone wants to judge me for dressing like a teen (which I don't) then I guess I can judge people for dressing matronly?

Do you wear clothing from Abercrombie, American Eagle, Aeropostale, etc? I love the AE jeans, and got a cute sweater from there, but then DD (who is in middle school) says someone at her school has the same sweater. Just wondering if other women wear these brands or if I'm too old to shop there now. :confused3
Too old!

I'm 25, and I refuse to buy jeans from any of those places anymore. There are cute alternatives to those stores. Not appropriate for a woman your age, IMO.

It's cringeworthy when a mom and daughter dress alike. It's not attractive when 40 year old women wear stuff like that. It clearly isn't made for them.

I graduated from High School almost 30 years ago. Threads like these make me feel like I am back in school again.

Are you kidding with these comments?? You have never seen this person in that clothing, you dont know their body type, yet here you are judging. Amazing.

Everyone has a different body type. I know a lot of 40 somethings that look amazing in it.

What is not appropriate? How would you even know where they came from short of looking at the tag?

"Stuff" like what? Jeans? Shirts? The outfits that many of us posted seem perfectly appropriate.

PigletGirl Why don't you post pictures of outfits that you wear that are more appropriate for us.

I buy jeans from old navy. Not because I can't shop in those other stores, I just happen to like on jeans. If they fit me well, I'd shop there.
