We Knew It Was Coming . . .

So, it's typical (I'm reading this as you saying it's the norm) for ALL the characters come around to your table, and some twice, in a full restaurant with 40...50...60+ tables, in 20-30 minutes?

That's an average of 30 seconds or less per table. It takes that long or longer for a character to do one single autograph.
We've never had a problem at any of our experiences either and often see the characters multiple times (often just a wave or pull a kids hat or something on the second interaction)

The thing is that the tables are turning over. I know nothing about restaurants, but it is not like they sit 60 tables at one time and then start at table 1 and table 60 is waiting the whole time for characters.

I also don't think the characters come around to our table twice in 30 minutes, but I have seen them come to our table and then pass again within an hour.

I just took the time to email Disney and let them know how disappointing this is. There is no way our family is going to waste time and money at a character meal without signatures and at that point will no longer need our deluxe dining package either. I encourage everyone else to let them know they don't like this idea either.
I totally agree. I'm going to email them as well and greatly encourage everyone to do the same. The biggest problem is, most people won't take the 2 minutes to email Disney nor will they cancel or stop booking ressies. They will just let things progress and complain or accept. In order for their to be change, you need to take some type of action. Disney will continue to end the magic because most people are too greedy to exercise moderation and respect and too lazy to stand up and say bring the magic back or we walk.

Previous poster made a good point. Why buy the autograph books and pen if the characters can't / won't sign anymore? Maybe this is just a character meals and NOT anywhere else

Honestly though, I'd rather they cut the signatures from characters in the parks instead of at the meals. We pay the high prices for the meals in order to skip those long lines in the parks. It seems a little backwards that we'd pay so much money to get less than what someone out in the park got for free.

Exactly what I said earlier in the thread. Makes no sense! Plus could shorten the long lines in the parks. I emailed them with my suggestion. :)

Thinking it over......I cant imagine ANY scenario where a character wiill refuse to sign if asked. Maybe theyre hoping it will cut time as some ppl will be satisfied with the cards, but I cant believe theyll say no to ppl who still ask - and the little kids with the custom made autograph books that was made specially made 6 months ago, who are SO excited for the characters to sign their books. Theres no way Disney would stoop that low, IMO.

And i totally forgot til DD reminded me - we did get the presigned card at H+V.......we threw it away and still got her book signed. It didnt even occur to us that the card was supposed to replace the autographs.

The face characters do a good job of interacting WHILE signing. They shouldn't stop that. I have mixed feelings about the costume characters. Sometimes I feel bad for them because it's so awkward for some to sign. My kids would rather have the experience than the autograph.

We do have these awesome 4x6 index cards with each characters name and picture on it that we're working on completing. Hopefully you can get autographs for all these characters at other locations besides restaurants.

There was the report on the Facebook page that cp characters are signing again. Perhaps people are getting worked up about nothing. Nothing against the op but I the past he has not had the most accurate information.

This isn't hard. Someone gives the next table a heads up, 1 item per person and get it ready. Handing a kid a card mass produced by a printer, not signed, isn't exactly the same as an autograph, nor a suitable replacement.

Crossing my fingers this turns out to be nothing more than a failed test.

I think it's easy to brush this off as no big deal when you're either a very frequent Disney guest who has had their fair share of autographs over the years, you were never into autographs to begin with, or you (and your children) are past that stage. I can't say I agree with the attitude that all you're paying for is a meal and it's acceptable for Disney to do what they will as long as there is some sort of food provided.

Not only is the idea that they're moving towards cards over signatures disappointing, the whole reasoning behind it bothers me. There are SO many things that make Disney parks so special that are not direct revenue generating activities. Think of all the opportunities for shopping/dining that would open up if people stopped spending so much time waiting for and watching the afternoon parades, and how much they're paying in labour costs alone every time they put on a parade. Think how much faster they could shuffle people through the character lines giving them more park time and ultimately leaving them more time for spending money if they decided to do away with pictures in favour of handing one out instead. Think how much faster they could move people through the buffet/family style restaurants if they started limiting the number of plates you could make. To me this is a slippery slope, it is (in my opinion) a huge cut in character interaction which is (again, in my opinion) a major if not the major reason to visit these character meals in the first place.

Twenty years later my family still fondly remembers the time a character goofed around with my younger brother and stopped to play tic tac toe with him (prompted by the character) in his autograph book. Those memories last much longer than remembering how fast you got through a character meal. Autograph books have been a staple of character interactions for as long as I can remember. I still have mine from Disneyland in the early 90s. I really hope my kids can grow up with fond memories of it too.

And for the record, we have visited Disney many times over the years with multiple character meals each trip, and the vast majority of them haven't taken significantly longer than a meal at a non-character buffet. We too have had meals where they've been to our table more than once. If multiple autographs were really a major issue, a much less drastic solution would be to limit autographs to one per person and paper only. Although, I suppose they chose the cards instead as Disney isn't known for their enforcing rules and confronting guests when needed.

Disney has plenty of options for families who just want a quick meal. To me this screams cost cutting/revenue generating, not alleviating long waits at character meals. Ultimately I hope this pans out to be nothing (preferably before March ;)), hopefully those Facebook reports are accurate and it stays that way!

I was at Crystal Palace today and the characters were signing things. Also I did not receive a signature card. Not sure if they were temporarily out or stopped. Just passing along experience.

I'm glad to hear they've started signing again and hope it stays that way. We have 5 character meals over our 4 night stay and are really excited for our 3 year to get an autograph book filled out like his older siblings. We don't have Crystal Palace planned this time, but do have Tusker House.

I have already emailed Disney about this change. This would make me stop booking character dining. Isn't the point of character dining so that you don't have to line up for the characters individually in the parks? Disney push the autograph books so that would mean having to line up to meet the characters to get them to actually sign the book (an autograph card doesn't cut it. Especially if you're getting something signed aside from the books (I do Vinylmations. It's a great way to look back and see who I met over the trip)

You pay a premium for character dining. The food you are given is never in line with what you pay simply because a Princess or Mickey is walking around. Many families at dining have 1-3 kids and 2 or more adults. You are paying for everyone to eat and often only 1-2 people have any real interaction with the characters. Since everyone paid to dine there (and adults pay far more than children), you should be able to get autographs for everyone at the table. I wouldn't mind if they limited the autographs (5 people/5 autographs) but to stop signing entirely is wrong.

Can't say I mind this. I never understood the appeal of getting character autographs, and it takes forever while other guests are patiently waiting for a simple picture.

My four year old loves the autographs. I've never understood why adults wait to get signatures from other adults in costumes but to each their own.

For me, it has nothing to do about the scrawled autograph. It's having a physical reminder of the interactions we had. I have the Vinylmations on display and countless times it has lead to someone saying "Oh do you remember when....." It had trigger a memory that would often be long forgotten.

I'd rather they do neither since Disney has become crazy expensive.
