BYOS bring your own straw (Disney removing straws and more in 2019)

This is all window dressing and will give Iger his creds with the proper crowds at cocktail parties. Is that why he closes the parks earlier and eliminated the Electrical night parade? I have my suspicions.

I'll give you that this is more a PR move than anything else, but as I stated earlier, I'm glad that the "public" part of the PR is more interested in cutting back on waste than sucking on a straw. It's a small step, but one in the right direction at least.

Do you know why I think this won't work? Because people are idiots. Look to literally anything that is free. No one will be satisfied with one. People will be asking for their free re-usable bag with every purchase they make. No, charge for them, and charge a decent amount. that way people will buy ONE and actually you know, reuse it. Incentives for bringing your own bag I am completely on board for though. 50 cents off your total purchase of 20 dollars or more if you use your own bag.

As to the straw debate, people arguing against it have NOTHING to stand on. hide behind the minority that needs it so that you can have your precious straw. Come on. it's a complete superlative for 99% of the population. The 1% that need it will find their own alternative that works, because they NEED it. That's how needs work. Just because Disney might save money by no longer providing straws does NOT make it a financially driven agenda.
I honestly don’t see the fuss about the straws, unless someone has a medical need for one. The paper ones at AK don’t bother me and I’m perfectly capable of drinking without one.

So in all the convos on this I don't see anyone thinking that if major players like Disney, theme parks, cruise lines, schools, fast food locations etc all stop buying plastic straws ... offering only paper straws ......... that the manufacturers will retrofit their production lines to (1) produce only paper straws since that market will increase replacing their lost sales or (2) produce other things such as sipper tops etc that they can sell in huge bulk again completely getting out of the straw business. At that point the plastic straws may be made by so few that the costs will be driven up, meaning those places who were keeping them may choose to not spend that money and make a switch as well.

We have to start somewhere on being responsible and while it seems small, I think the fact that these are so dangerous to animals, and there are alternative products - it's a good target. There are also a wide range of options that folks can purchase and carry themselves from stainless to bamboo to silicone to glass to reusable plastic ... they all come with carriers and cleaners. We are looking to purchase some of these for our cruise.

Well said! It may be a minor thing, but it can lead to widespread industry-wide changes that can make a real difference.

I really like this quote I saw on the wall at Living with The Land - "We have not inherited the world from our forefathers, we have borrowed it from our children."

Don't you just love those walls. I often find myself standing there reading and thinking how wise children are .. then take pictures of it.

An update: it looks like this will only apply to plastic straws. Apparently paper straws will be available.

So it may not be a big deal.

I don't think he's trolling. Apparently in at least one CA municipality the penalty for giving out a plastic straw is stronger than for knowingly passing along HIV/Aids. I too find that to be absurd.
But that has nothing to add to this discussion. There are hundreds of things that have smaller penalties than plastic in certain areas. Continuing to discuss that will only open a further can of worms and force me to close this thread.

It has absolutely nothing to do with what Disney is doing, though. In some municipalities drug offenses carry a longer sentence than violent ones, but that has nothing to do with Disney and also really doesn't belong in this discussion. I suppose if that poster feels passionate enough about it, he could start a discussion on the community board, as it has no relation to any Disney category.

Getting back to the original post---Disney is getting rid of plastic straws and cutting down on the use of plastic cups and bags. But, as a previous poster pointed out, ZIPLOC is now sponsoring KidCot and giving each child a plastic bag to hold trading cards from each country. ZIPLOC is also the new sponsor for Splash Mountain, giving riders plastic bags to keep their belongings dry. Their "commitment to environmental stewardship" sounds a bit shaky to me.
