The Running Thread - 2019

+1. I have been a long time Asics shoe wearer and for the Nimbus 19 I had to go up one half size and I was fine. I bought 6 pairs of them on clearance and I love them. They are definitely different than the 17's. I just bought a pair of the 20's as they are now on clearance and they are almost identical to the 19's. The 21's are out and they seem to be a different shoe so I will probably stock up on the 20's before they are gone and then take my chances on the 21's and beyond...
I'm still wearing 18's & have a few more pairs to wear. I'll probably have to slice the 19s toe box to wear them as I have a pair just sitting around, so squinchy. I've read the 21's might have gone back to a little wider toe box??? I love the cushion they give and haven't found something else I like for that so hoping the 21's are different in the toebox.

If you read customer reviews on the 20's, people reported that the toe box is wider. I found them to be the same as the 19's but you should check them out for yourself. And if you do, you just need to go up a half size and I bet they will fit fine. When I first tried them at the running store, the sales rep even suggested going up a full size but I was happy with the half. The 21's look like a totally different shoe from what I have seen and read. If you get a chance to try them on, too, I would be curious how they compare.

@DopeyBadger oh my goodness thank you thank you thank you. Your post is amazing, I cannot thank you enough. It didn’t even occur to me that knowing the purpose of each day would be so integral. I was thinking I could blindly follow a training plan and succeed, like I did with the half. Foolish me, this is clearly entirely different beast.

QOTD: What are some topics that yall would like to see discussed? PM me or reply here with the ideas please!
A simple question I have been thinking about lately, what distance do you consider a short run, medium run, or long run?

In years past I hosted a WDW QOTD on another Disney forum. Each week I featured on a different park/theme (MK, Epcot, HS, AK, DS, Resort Hotels) and each day of each week had a specific “favorite” question. Such as favorite attraction, show/parade, TS, QS, Resort Hotel, etc. These kinds of questions do a great job of getting people interacting! Once you establish the format, you have QOTD for several weeks. I’m sure it wouldn’t take much effort to add a runDisney twist too!

Ugh the Nimbus change is real. I need a wide toe box and was a loyal Nimbus runner (also stocked up during super sales). Tried the 18 or 19 and had no idea about the narrower toe box and then after 100+ miles I discover a bunch of seed corns (porokeratosis). Luckily I still had 2 pairs of 17 left, but once I’m finished with this last one I’m switching to Brooks Glycerin until the Nimbus comes back.

ASICS changed their Nimbus models, mostly the toebox, starting with the 19. If you end up buying them, they have to be at least a half size bigger. I had Saucony a long long time ago so I cannot say anything about them. I might endup in a running store for a fitting one of these days, maybe that is also your best bet... They definitely should know about the Nimbus evolution!

All shoe companies do this now. It drives me crazy and sometimes takes me a while to find new shoes that work.

When I find shoes that work for me, I buy a bunch of them and put them away until needed. Look online for your older shoe model that works for you. Maybe you will get lucky and find some.

I am assuming they made it more narrow because they definitely feel tighter. I have 19's. That's the pair I was wearing last year when I was running. The mileage is up on those so I will be moving to another pair of 19's when I start running again. I also have a new pair of Cummulus in the closet. I don't like the Nimbus 20's at all, just like I didn't like the 18's. It seemed to be an odd number thing that worked for me but now the 21's stink too. So I went to the Cummulus again and now they stink.

I tried to buy as many 17's as I could before they were gone but I am out of them. Now they appear to be out of the 19's in my size too. To further complicate things I need more room than I usually did because of the ankle braces I'll be wearing.

Anyone out there have any opinions on Altra's. They look wide. I have heard people on IG talk about them. I was at the local running store yesterday getting my daughter some track spikes and saw some. I picked up a pair and they were really light, they also seemed to have padding in them too. I might try those?

I am considering trying some altras next. I need a huge toe box to not get calluses on the inside of my big toe and foot, and they are supposed to have one of the biggest. My Saucony Ride 10s were OK in that regard but I don't like the cushioning, feels too dead. I like the feel of the Ghost 11s I just got, but am already getting calluses again with those, even tho I got a wide. I am already a forefoot runner tho, so I'm a little worried about how my achilles will hold up with zero drop putting even more strain on it than I already am.

They are a newer brand, but I think Topo makes a wider toebox running shoe that isn't 0 drop. I believe their road shoes is a 5 mm drop.

QOTD: While the racing bubble may have popped, why do you think ultras are gaining in popularity now?

ATTQOTD: I think for some people they are looking for the next challenge. I also think that doing something fewer people do thats a extreme accomplishment makes one feel a little more like a bad ___. I know I would feel like one if I ran a 50 miler or 100 miler lol.

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions!!!!

Personal Update:

Our dog, Dixie, is taking a turn for the worse and this morning was a hard one. Poor thing has almost zero control of her bladder and she's having a hard time walking in the mornings. Today she was very afraid of something and was just barking at nothing while having her tail tucked between her legs. We haven't made any final decisions yet, but I fear she wont make it much longer. I am struggling with my want to keep her and not be selfish, but I hate to see her suffer, which is believe she is at this point.

ATTQOTD: I think you nailed it. An Ultra is just the next progression for those who have mastered the marathon distance and are looking for another challenge.

I'm so sorry about Dixie! It really is the hardest decision to make.
