Moving to Melbourne, Florida

Congrats! I am jealous - we are just beginning our journey. Looking at Melbourne as 1 of 3 options! Seems like the most jobs are in that area, too!
Dh is a software engineer and that area was perfect for him. He actually had an interview there with a different company but he cancelled it because he was more interested in this job

You will love the zoo! Melbourne is a nice area and you can easily get to WDW (if you want to!). We moved to Florida two decades ago from up north and have never looked back.
I see so many things about the zoo. The tree top trek looks awesome! Have you ever done that?

I’m a big reader so of course I already started looking at the libraries lol. I noticed that almost the whole area is linked and use the same catalog so that’s awesome. I should be able to find most books I want and I’m willing to drive for them.

I've also heard nothing but positive things about Viera. Tons of new construction. Close to the beach, but not so close that you have to worry about hurricanes. The shopping center there is very nice, worth the 20 minute drive from Melbourne to get there.
And I have to say that the Melbourne Zoo is very cool. My wife's cousin works there, and just had a wedding there a week and a half ago, and it seemed like it was very well run. It was packed on Saturday afternoon.

We looked at the shopping center and it looks really nice! So many great stores to choose from. I also like that the houses look pretty new and most of them have really good neighborhood amenities. I guess the zoo will be one of our first tourist things to do lol

The school I volunteer at

The gym i belong to it's one of a kind a inspiring

Last if we don't feel like cooking were super close to restaurants
I’m an elementary teacher so I’m excited about the schools in that area. They look really nice. I did notice that Viera doesn’t have a great option for a middle school besides the charter school but we don’t even have kids yet so I’m not worried about it.

I’m hoping we can get in a neighborhood that has its own gym. Just one less thing to worry about

Yay! I’m glad we found someone who lives there. You’ll know a lot more about the area than what we can get from the interweb lol. I would prefer to be slightly more inland. I know it won’t help much with storms but it’s better than being right on the coast.

What do you love most about Melbourne?

It's pretty quiet and laid back. The zoo is the top draw, along with the beach and being only an hour or so from Disney and the other attractions. There's two libraries to choose from, downtown Melbourne and Eau Gallie (sadly for safety, I recommend Eau Gallie).

Inland is safer (no storm surge) but you can still get major damage and flooding from storms, so I would advise looking at the flood maps and having flood insurance either way, for piece of mind. Homeowners insurance is high everywhere in the state, but that's the cost if you want to live here. Auto insurance can also be high, so shop around for that too.

There are plenty of things to do community-wise. There's the big fair every year, there's all kinds of activities and festivals held at Wickham Park...your weekends will fill up fast :).

If you need anything, give me a holler!

I started looking at Floridadisaster.org and they seem to have some really good info. I haven’t shown it to Dh yet but we’ll look through it together. I’m hoping the company gives us a realtor and they end up being a big help when we look for houses. I found a flood map but I’m having a little trouble reading it and telling which zones are which.

We’ll have to take a look at both home owner’s and car insurance to see what we can get.

What’s the big fair? That sounds so fun! Our state has a fair every year that’s so awesome.

Am I right that the Washington nationals no longer do spring training there? If so, that’s a bummer but we’ll probably drive in to Orlando to watch the braves anyway (I grew up near Atlanta).

Do you know if there is any kind of live music scene? Dh and I are both in a band currently and I’d like to get something going or join one there if possible.

Thanks for the help!

No I haven't done the tree top trek but it looks AWESOME! We did the kayaks though. So cool to kayak and look at animals. And I live in a different county south of yours, but it's probably the same. You can go online and reserve books and they will transport them to your local library in a day or two. Then you just go and grab them off of the reserved shelf. You can return them in any library branch drop box. No need for you to drive for them! When my kids were little I was ordering left and right and it's super convenient.

We moved to Central Florida 26 years ago not because of careers, but only because of the weather. I would never have done it for a job. Jobs come and go. We have been very happy here but other than the weather and for me, WDW, Florida doesn't have much else for us and that's why we're leaving very soon. Would I do it again, yes.

I had to drive from Melbourne to Ft. Myers last week, and I know what you mean...

My library does something similar but now they’re charging $2 per book to cover shipping costs. I read a lot so I like the idea of having so many libraries to choose from

I’m super excited about moving to Florida. There is so much more to do than where we live. We always sit around bored because there’s nothing to do here

On weekends, you can drive to Tampa (actually St. Petersburg) to watch the most fun team in Major League Baseball. :teeth:

Oh I’m sure we’ll be driving over to Tampa a lot with baseball and hockey being over there lol. We’ve also never been to Busch gardens and I’d like to go. Dh has never even been to the beach!
