Smugglers Run - how roles are assigned?

I'm trying to think, and I can't recall another ride in all of Disney where the people you're sharing the experience with have a direct impact on what your experience actually is. Can anybody think of one?

Didn't I read somewhere there was an autopilot switch if you didn't want to actively participate? Or did I hallucinate that...

for the gunners there are at least - putting details in spoilers

which in full mode there are buttons for aiming and firing, in autopilot mode the aiming is done for you but you still have to fire

If having a more experienced game'r to pilot the falcon = a better experience, then I would give it up. Otherwise, wait in line another 3 hours for your chance to pilot it :)

well, when my youngest controls the "spin" on Buzz Lightyear that has a negative impact on my score for sure!!!

but largely this is a new experience - obviously that comes with pluses and minuses

I'm really sad that we are even having a discussion about the possibilty of grown adults fighting over seating position in a theme park ride. I know there are some die hard fans out there, but in the end, it is just a ride. It is pretend and I don't understand why we can't have fun with it for what it is and behave like mature people.

I would think that the CM's are trained on how to handle this situation. Perhaps if those adults start to escalate their position, the CM would give them the pilot role for the next ride?

That's the part I'm missing. How are these credits applied and where is the interactivity at say, Olga's?

you get a rating after your run on the Falcon and are told what your payment is (what you brought back - damage to the Falcon) and that stays with your account (accessed via your phone or magic band or *something*) and CMs that can access that can reference that (so in the shops, etc.) so if your score is high they can be "wow, word of your piloting is getting around" or something like that

At least this is my understanding

I wonder if this is active as of today or is it a planned roll-out? I also read a review where the reviewer was told something like "you owe money to Hondo for the way you've flown". The reviewer felt chastised, whereas I would play it up and say, "Can you point me to the Sabacc table?".

That hasn't been seen as much yet. I think the media didn't get that aspect as much because it was more about getting the content and trying everything.

Well, even if it isn't active starting today, I'd say that would be very minor. The CMs have enough on their plate for a little while.

I truly believe (or at least hope) any disagreements/arguments will be few and far between

I think it is just when people wait 2+ hours for an experience (after waiting 40 years before that) to then not get to experience it as they want, I can see it makeing people less than thrilled. And I think it is ok to be a little upset - but there is obviously a big different between being being "a bit bummed" and "fighting/causing a ruckus" over it
At least one of the reviews I read said the ride’s best when there’s lots of good-natured yelling at the other roles (yelling at pilots for causing damage, yelling at engineers for not fixing the damage...)

So if you do crash or blow up right away, is that game over for everyone?

No. The ride video is the same for everyone its just the amount of damage, the number of fighters you shoot down, and amount of cargo you secure that changes based on the groups actions. From what vloggers have said, there is a little bit of autopilot that forces the MF into the situations so a bad pilot can't miss a turn and completely screw up the objective.

I think people are over analyzing the group dynamic of the ride. It seems like each person is given a score at the end so a good gunner can still score well even if the pilot hit a lot of items along the way.

...and probably worst when you get saddled with a dysfunctional family who spend the whole ride screaming at and insulting each other. I could see both scenarios happening.

So from the videos I watched, everyone is in the cockpit together?

That's doubly lame especially considering the gunner position, I thought would be you know in it's own area, like it is in the real Falcon.

OP here, the wierd thought of adults literally fighting over this just popped into my head, maybe based on stories of people fighting or yelling at each other over parade or firework spots. This is a new level, mainly based that wait times are dong to be insane where there is no do-overs . Also the fact that here you have a ride where more adults have a deeper connection than maybe kids (the generational thing) .. Just assuming all this.. but even in my case I would not trade the pilot seat even with my own kids!! I love the orginal SWs and to pilot the Millennium Falcon is a -long dream for many adults.

It's not lame at all. And it would cause sooooo many issues if someone had to be in that spot when they wanted to be in the cockpit. And let's be honest, people want to be in the cockpit of the Falcon, not the gunner position. This way, even if you are the gunner, you can still be in the cockpit and experience it.

This was actually my first thought when I saw that there were six positions on the ride and they weren't equal - "How are they going to deal with this? Nobody's going to want to sit in the back. Everybody's going to want to pilot the Falcon." I can see a lot of arguing and tempers flaring regarding this. This might end up being the ride no cast member wants to work at!
The reviews I read said the engineers have the best view so if you are more of a person who wants to absorb the ride, that is the position to do it in

I have one of those parade stories, so I can (unfortunately) totally see people getting so focused on getting what THEY want, they end up causing issues with others. A mom at Boo To You parade was getting really nasty toward me because my 8 year old was right in front and her precious little one in the stroller to his right didn't have a clear view all the way down the street of the parade coming. Nobody was blocking her kiddo, but she couldn't see 20 feet down the road so that meant my kid needed to step aside? nope.

I say this as a non Star Wars fan (though someone who enjoys fandom of other things)....

To many this is NOT just a ride. It is the closest they will ever get in their lifetimes to living a dream. It's decades and generations of memories with families (many of which are no longer here), feeling excitement, being anxious, getting to know and follow the lives of characters - all only previously accessible in 2D on a screen - that are now real. REAL. As real as it can ever possibly get. While we all know its "pretend", it is immersing enough that for a few minutes one can fully escape the world they live in and let go just enough to be able to experience things they have only dreamed about before. Unless you have truly been a fan of something like this, you can't really understand.

For me, it was seeing the World of Warcraft game come to life as a movie a few years back. It was the most incredible thing to see it like that - on screen. If they were to ever build a land from a zone in Azeroth you can bet I would savor every last drop of it for as long as I could and I would absolutely bring down the hammer if someone tried to take the drivers seat in my chopper.
