The Running Thread - 2019

It looks like the Android version for Garmin hasn't been updated since Oct. 25. That's a reasonable estimate of when I lost the ability to post comments. Hopefully once they've gotten the iOS version fixed, they'll worked on the Android version.

Unfortunately, it’s very unsurprising. The principal antagonist aside, this is the story of so many athletes/people, across the entirety of sports (and education and occupations), who are pushed to their breaking points and beyond because it’s (supposedly) the only way to separate the wheat from the chaff. Physical and emotional destruction are the natural byproduct.

Yeah, I know. It's just, you heard so much about her in high school. Then when they announced she was headed to NOP I honestly thought to myself, She's very young to be handed over to this guy, even just given what we knew about him at the time. When it was announced she was leaving and then you never heard of her joining another group for a while I wondered what happened but yeah, so often you just forget that person even existed after a while or maybe 10 years later you ask, "Hey, remember so-and-so? What happened to them?" Well at least in this case now you know. Nike's response was basically, "Well this is the first we are hearing of any complaints from her" which is very hard to believe. Your big recruit, who was a minor (running) celebrity when she arrives, just up and leaves one day and you never looked into why? You just kind of shrugged and said, Oh, I guess she just doesn't like running anymore? ok Nike.

Hi ya'll!!

This will be my first winter running outside. Can you talk to me about what you all wear in 20-30 degree weather, especially during training where you may not be running as hard as a race? I've googled it, but thought I would get some real people input. Running clothes are so expensive and I don't want to buy things unnecessarily, but also don't want to under prepare and keep myself inside.

Well, it was 30 degrees outside this morning when I ran an easy B pace run. I layered two long-sleeved tech shirts I got from races and wore a pair of tights. I was pretty cold when I was done about an hour and a half later. I wore a buff type headband over my ears and my head was a perfect temp though. I've been running for many many years and I still feel like it takes me a month into fall/winter to remember what I like to wear at various cold temps. Tomorrow's weather will be similar and I will be out there almost an hour longer so I will probably wear a light running jacket over my long sleeved shirt(s).

I usually use this website to help me decide. It is usually pretty good for me. Sometimes I think I’ll want more layers than it suggests, and then when I actually go run, I warm up, and end up getting hot. I try and trust it. Also, I will say if it is really windy and cold, I will make sure I have wind pants on and a wind breaker jacket over whatever base layers needed.

Go to page 374 and start reading.....there was just some talk about this (and I'm too lazy to retype my answer ;) )

For those that have ran both marathons, would you recommend Chicago or NYC?
It depends on what you want. Chicago is faster, logistically easier, and is very well run. The water/Gatorade stops are at another level. Plus the course really doesn’t have tight spots. Crowd support is great.

New York is more difficult, but the views are incredible. It’s basically a 26.2 mile party. New York is just an amazing event. From the opening ceremony until the Final Finishers... it’s just special.

Both are great and both cities have good pizza! It may come down to which style pizza you prefer.

New York’s lottery is significantly more difficult to get selected.

Hard to say with everyone being different, but I use very little compared to some. Ran 6 miles yesterday in 19* and wore 32 degree heat base layer tights and long sleeve (cheap at local Costco), a pair of shorts, my long sleeve from the recent wine and dine, thin gloves, and a nit hat. I was warm and toasty the whole distance except for my toes. Should’ve doubled up the socks. Fingers and toes are really what does it for me, if they are good then the rest stays warm from running. I don’t like more layers, if it hits single digits I hit the tread mill.

Not like I'm stalking deals....well, okay, I guess I am....

Amazon has the Vivoactive 3 for $130, which is a really good deal (even if they have already released VA4)

OK, you got me looking at the VA4. Of course, Garmin's site says it won't be available for 5 - 8 weeks. But still... can't see right away what is supposed to be better on the VA4.

Both the VA3 and VA4 says the battery life is 5 hours for GPS + music and significantly longer (like 15 hours) for GPS without music. I've never downloaded any music to my VA3, and yet my GPS battery life is about 5 - 6 hours. I have a widget on my VA3 to start/stop the music playing from my phone. Is that the problem?

I guess I will answer my own question by removing that widget before my run today and see how the battery life goes. I thought the music control widget would be useful, but actually I never use it. I rarely do anything except start the music at the beginning of my run (from my phone) and stop it at the end (by turning my earbud off).

Cypress Half Marathon Race Report:

So far this fall, I have been very lucky with the weather, and this morning was about prefect for running, with T+D was around 80. Cypress Running Club is one of the sponsors of the race, and our running club was out in force again this year. The race was scheduled to start at 6:45, so we again had our team picture at 6:05. I think we again composed about 10-15% of the entire field. I love having the race site about 10 minutes from the house, and one of the local high schools being the site, so we get to hang out in the cafeteria pre and post race.

This was my 3rd race in the last 4 weeks, and since my half 2 weeks ago was much better than expected, I was not sure what to expect today, and told some of my friends that I would be happy with a sub-1:40 and try to be consistent on my splits. After the team pic, I ran a mile warm up lap around the school, and made my way to the corrals. Met up with some more friends, and one was looking for the same pace as I was, so we started together.

Splits:
1 7:32.5
2 7:30.5
3 7;29.0
4 7:28.1
5 7:22.9
6 7:27.9
7 7:19.2
8 7:19.5
9 7:16.2
10 7:23.1 (fumbled a water stop and had to slow up to make sure I got some)
11 7:18.4
12 7:14.7
13 7:11.4

One of our running club friends was out at mile 9 and got a great shot of me. Best race pic in years!!! As you can see, I was feeling pretty happy!

Finished with a 1:36:57 (my 3rd fastest half). 2/57 age group, 76/649 male, 87/1260 overall. This is the 5th year of the race, and this was the first time I broke 1:40.

I was again very happy with the race. All 3 races this fall have been so much better than I expected of myself.

I ran the Madison Half Marathon today. Excited to say I walked away with a nearly 2 minute PR of 1:28:40! My first time under 90 minutes! EEK! That has been a goal I've been reaching towards for years. Excited to see what comes next as I enter the final prep towards the sub-3 attempt at Disney 2020.

Nice! Congrats on a couple of awesome races.

I finally caught up reading this thread since i left for W&D and was excited to see so many good race reports, tips, and stories. I went from record high (for this time of year) Orlando temps in the 90s to a record low 32 in NE Georgia. So the tips for cold-weather running were timely!

That said, October totals:
113.6 miles
Pace: slow!

Decided on Weds to run a Marathon today. I wanted 1 more so that Disney would be my 20th. Was planning on really taking it easy since I was part of a 200 mile relay 2 weeks ago and then ran the NY Marathon last weekend. It was the RDC Marathon which starts at a local Mall and then does a long out and back on the American Tobacco Trail (A crushed gravel and pavement trail converted from railroad tracks. It was nice being able to wait in my car till about 5 minutes before the race started.

I forgot my headphones so was prepared for a fairly boring run, but I fell in with the 4 hour pace group and we had a really good time talking and joking. The pacer was really incredible. He was within a second or two of every mile split and they crossed the finish within 10 seconds of the goal he set. I there was a yelp for Pacers, I would totally give him 5 stars. There was a good mix in that pace group including a couple people who were running their first marathon and a lady who was running her 105th. She ran NY last week, and is Pacing Richmond next week.

Around mile 16 I was surprised to see a buddy at a road crossing. He saw most grumpy text to my running buds about forgetting my headphones and brought me a pair. Having music was rejuvenating and I wanted to run a little bit faster. About mile 17.5 I left the pace group so I could push myself a little bit more. I wound up finishing about 3:30 ahead of the pace group. All in all it was a good race. Crowd support was light, but I had a really good time running with the people I met.
