Let’s Talk Mask Designs and Styles!

Those that have contacted Shop Disney about a refund or exchange, how did you get ahold of someone? I tried calling just now and got a message saying all agents are busy and to call back at another time...not even an option of being on hold! I also sent them an email several weeks ago and have not gotten a response. Chat option is almost always showing as offline as well.

I didn't contact them about masks, but had an issue with a Cogsworth clock that I ordered last month. I had good luck with messaging the offical Facebook for Shop Disney. Someone got back to me within a day or so.

Review on the Nordstrom masks:
Wore one today to DTD. These masks are cotton t-shirt fabric, 2 layer w/a filter pocket, 6 for $24. They are soft and comfortable, but not quite as soft as the Everlane masks. They fit well, but beware if you need a large size -- I think these masks run a little smaller than usual. They fit me just fine, and most masks are a bit large on me -- these are definitely a bit smaller and more fitted than the Old Navy masks.

For comparison, the Nordstrom mask and the L size Disney mask are about the same size (petite adult). The medium Disney mask is what I would call "big kid" size. The small Disney mask is "little kid" size.

Just got off the phone with Shop Disney about my mask order. Took about 10 minutes to get through to a very nice CM who issued an e-coupon so that I will be able to reorder my masks in larger sizes. The second order hasn't shipped yet, so he cancelled that -- and suggested that I reorder those masks (in larger sizes) when I use the e-coupon (which he assured me will stack with other discount codes, too) so that I qualify for the free shipping. (Yes!) No issues or arguments at all about refunding the masks. They just ask that you donate the unused masks.
If anyone has received Disney masks that are poor quality or are too small, call Shop Disney. The CMs are very helpful!

I wanted to come back and report on the masks that I bought from Athleta: https://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=100364#pdp-page-content . There were $30 (plus shipping) for 6 masks.
  • They are very physically lightweight with 3 layers. The outside layer is silky and the inside layer is very tightly woven and soft.
  • The mask is pleated to fit over your face and there is a metal wire to wrap around your nose to help seal it so your glasses don't fog up as easily.
  • They also have a small bead on the ear loops that allow you to adjust the fit. Sometimes the bead rubs against my ear but it doesn't bother me. YYMV.
  • I think that the tightly woven nature of the internal layer(s) makes this mask very effective at stopping droplets/etc.
  • Unfortunately, I did not find them any easier to breathe through over my other home made masks.
  • In all, they are very comfortable to wear. I have them in my regular rotation.

If you are a sewer, check out this pattern. It's one of the first I've found that I feel like I might be able to talk in. Hopefully I'll have a chance to try it out on Sunday.
Thanks for the pattern! It wasn’t too difficult at all and I used some fabric scraps to try it out 😷:

Here it is on my Official Mickey Mask holder. 512178We paid our popcorn ‘forward’ to the next guests so had a perfectly clean bucket ~ now used to store my clean masks and hang 1 from Mickey’s hand!

This is a great idea! Our masks are different sizes, so I can use Mickey for DH's masks and Minnie for mine. And Steamboat Willie can hold the disposables. :)

Me too. I think the problem with the exhalation masks is that the media hasn't spoken about it. We only found out that the N95 masks (we had bought them for smoke from wild fires) were not good because of the exhalation valve until my dad went to the DR's and they wouldn't let him wear it. They gave him a surgical mask to wear instead. We are back to saving those N95's for fire season when air quality is bad and wearing our cloth or surgical masks for covid.

I am still attempting to find a non pleated style all cotton mask that is not too expensive (under $12) that I don't black out and almost hit the floor if there is not a rack, my DH or my teenager to grab onto as I am going down. This is in an air conditioned building. While masks are now required in my area there are medical exemptions and the stores I have blacked out in have all told me to please go ahead and remove my mask. I am using grocery pick up where possible, sending DH to do shopping, using curbside for places that have it that are not grocery stores, and if necessary I provide the driving and I send teenager into the store to pick things up.
I am wanting to find one that works for the rare times I would need to go into a place and if at all possible my kids 4-H non livestock interview judging day. While we have a time slot set during hours that DH could go he has no experience other than he did bring one item that did not get placed in the boxes down to us last year. We are limited to those exhibiting items and one parent to accompany this year.
I have tried a pleated cotton one from JoAnns Fabric that my teenager picked up for me, a fitted style that I got at Michaels crafts before we had a mandate in place and disposible ones. My budget is extremely limited (even more so now as we had some unexpected expenses last week that I had to put on a credit card so now we are having to pay that off or at least down a bit-sadly the card is about maxed out again due to this expense) so I can't afford to try a bunch of different ones to see what works.
To give you an idea on how tight our budget is we have not had a family vacation that we paid for everything ourselves for the entire trip since March 2011 when we went to another town in our state so that our kids could participate in a pinewood derby type race with our church denomination. We drove up checked into our hotel, went to get something to eat (did get told that an anonymous person paid for our meal because our kids were being so polite) did a little swimming, went to bed got up the next morning loaded everything back up, took advantage of the free expanded contiental breakfast, went to the race, paid for a $5 lunch plate at the host church (choice of hot dog, polish, hamburger, or taco with chips and a water bottle type meals) for each of us, at at a Chinese resturant similiar to Panda Express but locally owned in that town and then drove home. Total cost for the trip even taking a truck that only got an an average of around 17 MPG was about $200 though we only spent about $145 thanks to our surprise someone paid for your dinner meal.
All other trips have been a couple of family reunions where we paid less than $100 for our share of the lodging for the week, paid maybe $50 tops to get something in the auction that is used to raise money for the next one, and some money for gas total running us between $200-400 for 5 days each time with the higher priced one being about 7 hours away so we did rent a car instead of driving our truck.

Got a reply on FB Messenger and they are sending me a credit for each of my orders. Would have preferred a full refund but I’ll take the credits and maybe we’ll re-order the masks in larger sizes or just find something new to get.

Have you tried to just use a bandana tied like a bank robber? Bandana's are pretty cheap to purchase or you can make one out of an old shirt, table cloth or sheets. You didn't say what was making you pass out but my guess is that the masks are just feeling too tight on your face. I'm thinking the bandana style might give you the little more space that you need. It's not really recommended by the CDC but if your having that type of a reaction to regular masks this would be better than nothing.

The other style I would try is the ones that are disposable that look like cones - they may keep the cloth away from your face.

I would also say that it's good to practice wearing masks. I've been wearing my masks more and more (morning walks and I usually only see 1 -2 people) just so I can get used it. The more I get used to wearing the masks the easier I breath in them and more relaxed I feel when I go grocery shopping.

Good luck to you.

I bandana was actually the first thing I tried. Thought it would look better than DH's cut off part of a pair of jeans and using the wife and daughter's hair bands didn't work so secure it with a safety pin so can go to Costco mask. (Eventually his company started providing them for use when they can't socially distance-he is in a 20 x 40 ft area all to himself 95% of his shift including breaks but still gets 1 per day and he is now using those)

How exactly would you suggest practicing wearing one when I put it on just before opening the door to the store which is air conditioned and set so that is between 65-68 depending on the store and within 2 minutes I am getting dizzy and 5 minutes it is either grab or hit the floor.

I can make it 10 minutes sitting with one on in my house either watching tv or checking the boards but that is not doing any movement other than my fingers typing if even that. Not exactly going to work for things like walking into a small store (literally it has 5-8 aisles that are maybe 10 feet from one end to the other) picking up 3-5 items checking out and going home ( even if I have the kids with me and we all need to use the washroom and they beg for favorite items it is a 10 minute or less expect when the rare times there is only 1 cashier and 3 people in line in front of me and those are still under 20.

Sorry I wasn’t much help I was just going off of your note and my own experience with masks.
Hope you are not using the jeans anymore as a mask- the dyes in jeans is very bad when breathed in regularly.

My only other suggestion is to try surgical masks. You can get 50 on Amazon for $20-$30. I find the surgical masks the easiest to breath in. If I have to have a mask on for hours I’ll be wearing those. I’m heading to my local zoo next week. I plan on wearing my cloth old navy mask but bringing a surgical mask just in case it gets to be too much for me.

If you find you really just can’t wear masks then I recommend getting a face shield. it’s not as affective against COVID as masks but it’s better than nothing.

It sounds like you are already practicing wearing a mask.

DH is wearing the dispable masks that he gets from work, they are getting tossed when our 15 year old decides they are too ripe for her tastes and puts them in the trash bag. (What can I say DH is a cheapskate who is on a mission I swear to prove to me right now that we can't grow a garden. (I asked him to please delute and spray the grasshopper killer on the garden and it was not done, yet he complains when I purchase any fresh fruits and vegetables or right now even frozen ones-we are due with both half a beef and a hog in the next 3-8 weeks plus will have a deer put in the freezer sometime in mid to late fall-because it goes bad a lot of times before we can use it. I purchase a week to 10 days worth and sometimes it will last past that and other times what I get today (Wednesday) is bad by Friday. It depends a lot on what we get for quality and right now stores in my area are given what is not wanted by larger markets due to the efforts it takes for suppliers to ship it here (it is more expensive due to there are not a lot of other things that can be then loaded on that truck and shipped elsewhere from what I understand so instead of making some money back on the return trip it's a wasted trip. We do have an advantage right where I am located in that we are on a major E W interstate so if there is space we can get some items. Right now there is not that much space so we get very little). I will eat canned fruit when I can get it before a certain younger child of mine opens all the cans and wastes them-either dumb down the sink attempting to drain them or eats half the can and then hides it until it is bad. Vegetables on the other hand all I can stand is corn and green beans which unless they are in green bean casserole must be french cut otherwise the texture gets to me.

Now to get my teenager to actually get the single layer masks made for me so I can test them out. I have some pretty material that is cut just the right size. Elastic is hard to find so plan to use bias tape and just leave a tail and then secure those for ties.

Has anyone worn the Kn95 masks? Thinking about ordering some- there’s FDA verified sites that sell them (at super inflated prices)- look better than a n95 and no valve issue.

Yes I find them harder to breathe in. But they aren't as bad as the typical n95 ones at hospitals. One thing I do like about the k95 are they earloops.
