Jon Gruden fired as coach of the Raiders

Actually, that context does help. I am wondering if the pictures and sharing were consensual?

Even if they were consensual, someone could always change their mind later and decide that they weren’t. Best to avoid in the first place.

Too many messy situations with exes and internet photos.

Things like this really make me shake my head. You would think someone like that who was somewhat "famous" would be extra vigilant in making sure they do not say stupid things or send stupid things over email. I can't believe they don't see these things can come back to haunt you.

Ok sorry but this dude is a moran. Who in their right mind puts stuff in an email??? Hello, McFly!

Everyone has their opinion, which I fully respect. But only a bonehead puts it in email.

It says a lot about the recipients of the e-mails that they didn't "suggest" that he should keep e-mails more appropriate/professional.

I don't think he just sent everything on blast, but knew who his recipients were.

That being said, I have never seen a single thing sent to me by work email that involved anything that would be subject to any kind of company discipline. No off color jokes or anything even vaguely racist. For over 25 years we've known that it can get someone fired. But I did occasionally hear something I found offensive said in person.

As Judge Marilyn Milian of the People's Court so eloquently says, “Say It Forget It, Write It Regret It.”

Exactly. What does it say about Dan Snyder that Gruden felt ok emailing him and Snyder not replying back with "dude, chill out. What is wrong with you?"

I suspect because that reply would also serve as an acknowledgement that he received it, viewed it, and recognized the inappropriateness of it. Then he would have to explain why he didn't report it. By just ignoring the email, he can later say he never really saw it.

I think the emails are really bad, but I do question why those actions are bad enough to push a person out of their job, while my governor has acknowledged wearing a kkk outfit or blackface (he can't remember which one, which makes me believe he's done both) and he remains in office. It's very unclear where the "that's so bad you lose your job" line is right now.

Or, you know, don’t say misogynist and racist stuff and you don’t have to worry about it
Well to be fair, not everyone can lead a perfectly puritan lifestyle and never say something dumb or offensive.

I think Gruden and the NFL missed a learning / teaching opportunity here.

Gruden is a white guy in a position of power. As we all know and are learning more and more, white privilege is a real thing especially to those in authoritative positions. Emails and pictures being shared through email demonstrate that privilege as 10 years ago, Gruden likely looked at these sorts of things as guy banter and locker room talk and thought nothing of it. This DOES NOT justify what was done or said. What it does is demonstrates what we as a society are trying to get away from. The casual racism, misogynic and homophobia. The fact we look at this now with disgust shows progress. it should have always been this way yes, but we can't change past transgressions, only try to eradicate future ones.

I think it would have served the NFL, the public, and even Gruden much better to have addressed this. Instead of grabbing pitch forks and going on witch hunts which only seems to polarize peoples opinions (oh, we're firing people over 10 year old emails, silly cancel culture VS anyone who doesn't think he should be publicly hanged must be racist / misogynists'/ homophobic) and really gets us no where. It would have been better served to say this is a prime example of what needs to change and Gruden could have said something along the lines of with what has been learned over the last few years something like this never would have even been fathomed. Or something along those lines.

All that being said, this was unbelievably stupid on Gruden's part even 10 years ago. I don't think he should skirt responsibility by any stretch.

I do think it hilarious though that the Buccaneers took his name off the ring of honor, but keeps Warren Sapp's who solicited hookers and assaulted women. But that's a different thread.....

So if his opinion is misogynistic and racist you still respect it? Why?
I didn't interpret what they said that way. I don't think they were respecting the specific opinion but the fact that we all have opinions.
