Bad Restraunt

Many tjanks
Every restaurant has great days, good days, average days and bad days. So....it is so hard to really tell if a restaurant is really awful or if someone just had a bad experience. I always just read the menus and check the prices and decide from there.

A few examples.....I had read terrible review on Chef Mickey. We had not been there in many years so when we went recently I was skeptical . But the food was fine and we enjoyed it!
Some people LOVE LOVE LOVE Le Cellier in Epcot. My husband and I did not like it much at all.

Aside from reading the menus and checking the prices in advance, the only other advice i can offer is to consider trying restaurants you can't try at home....we can eat all the Chinese and Japanese food and Mexican food we want at home so we usually dont go to those places at Disney. Some of our favorites are Boma in Animal Kingdom Lodge, Chefs De France, Morimoto Asia and Biergarten in Germany in Epcot simply because they are more unique :)
thanks

Well, you asked and here’s my experience and opinion.

First of all, I laugh when I read, all too often, “The Food was Inedible” . I’ve been going and eating at Disney since it was just a welcome center, yes that long, I have yet to encounter inedible food. Tony’s red sauce is not to my liking, it’s gives me heartburn from hell and I seldom eat Alfredo type sauces so I don’t eat there because frankly there are other Italian restaurant where I do enjoy the red sauce. Some trash Mama Melrose but I like it, but I also like Il Mulino, different price points, different experience. I do only 3 buffets (once in a great while) Tusker House for Breakfast, Boma for dinner and Biergarten (Love African and German food) other than those, the others don’t appeal to me. Chef Mickey, certainly everything is edible, I’m just not a fan of the typical turkey, mashed potatoes and gloppy Mac & Cheese but my kid is 22 so I don’t have to do the character thing anymore. The one place I will not eat, The Commissary at DHS. The food is certainly nothing to write home about, bit it’s edible, but for whatever reason, maybe eating there to late at night, it never stays in. After 3 times over several years, I called it quits, I’d rather go hungry. Cape May, I enjoy seafood, but I don’t like it at Cape May, many others enjoy it and you may too, for me it’s a NO. Ergo Nine Dragons, 6 of us had a wonderful meal with top notch service just this past December, a lot of people don’t care for it but I plan to go again. Ohana’s, à hands down favorite, NOT FOR ME, I like my hot food hot and this concept is lost there, so having done it several times, we no longer do. It’s not to say that your experiences would mirror mine in any way, so go and enjoy! And report back! BTW, they are all noisy!
Many thanks for your advice

I don't like seafood, but DH and DS love it, and they too said that it just wasn't good at Cape May. And definitely agree about ABC Commissary....yuck. Mama Melrose the food was not bad, but we have had poor service and also had to wait 45-1hr past our ADR time all 3 times we have been there, so it was finally enough to make us not go back. Chef Mickey's I would have to say was nearly inedible the time we went. The broccoli, which was sitting under a heat lamp, was still somewhat frozen, and the pirogies were dry and very "crunchy", and several other items were just "meh", and we went in with VERY LOW expectations as it was for our son's birthday and his choice, however I never expected it to not at least meet my very low expectations. School cafeteria food (I'm a teacher) is on a higher scale than Chef Mickey's IMO. We have always had good experiences at Ohana with the food (though once or twice the servers were an issue) and eat there every trip. We have avoided Tony's just because everyone says it is so awful, and there are other places we could get a good Italian meal. Most people dog Coral Reef, but we have eaten there twice (several years apart) and had excellent food and service both times. We tend to avoid restaurants that have the same stuff we can get at home any day of the week (50s Prime Time, Homecomin', Trail's End--though we did do that one once when our nephew was with us as he is an extremely picky eater and we were trying to find a balance for him all week). We also avoid Big River Grille because we live an hour from Chattanooga, where the only 2 other Big River Grilles are, and that is one of our favorite restaurants when in Chattanooga, but we just don't want to waste "Disney meal time" on it.

I agree....it is very subjective. And I also agree about Le Cellier.....I know everyone raves about the cheese soup, but personally I thought it looked and tasted like old bacon grease. I also have yet to meet a Disney cupcake that wasn't dry and mediocre, though most everyone else raves about the cupcakes. We also avoid restaurants we have at home/foods that we can eat at home.

I'm sitting in your corner on the vast majority of Disney cupcakes- pretty (sometimes. I'm not a fan of garish colours) but dear heavens...the cake portion is either overly moist like pudding with flour added or dry and tasteless. Gimme a Sprinkle's cupcake from DS and I'll leave the rest of them alone.

In all of our trips to Disney there have only been a few times when I could not eat the food. Number one is the Pizza at the Walk-up window outside of Via Napoli. I love Via Napoli but this place is not a take out of Via Napoli pizza. It was worse than gross. I threw it away. There was a place in Disney Springs about 4 years ago that served a Watermelon Sangria---sounds delicious--tasted like turpentine. One trip it was Columbia Harbor House. I sent the food back and it was replaced with a lovely chicken pot pie dish and then the last trip in January---BOG lunch---my sandwich---glorified grilled ham and cheese---and also one of my favorite sandwiches in all of Disney---arrived cold and greasy. Got my money back for that inedible mess and went elsewhere. If the food is bad you do have the option of letting management know and asking for a refund or another meal choice. I also don't care for CRT breakfast.

I agree with Cape May. Last time we ate there I looked over at DH and he knew and just shook his head. Awful! :sad2: Of course, we are from New England and are pretty tough critics when it comes to seafood.

Tony's.
Mama Melrose if you actually know and like real italian food - Mama Melrose is a nicer looking olive garden :crazy2:
We're also not a fan of buffet dinners except for Cape May Cafe. The rest of the locations serving dinner buffets are like Golden Corral :crazy2::scared:

We actually had inedible food at California Grill...my husband, who loves all manner of brussel sprouts, could not eat there's that came with the buffalo steak. They were way over salted and a mushy mess. I think CG can be great, but that night, a lot went wrong, more so than what went right. I'd go back for drinks and dessert, which were both very good, but I'm not sure I'd spend money on a main course or appetizers for awhile.
Coral Reef, the waiter kept bringing our table the wrong food, three times, and not a single apology.
Those are the only two meals where we had a really bad go of it. It does help to get an idea of what to expect by reading the menu and some reviews. And, as a PP mentioned, ask for management if things really go hay wire. We didn't at Coral Reef, and I wish we would have. We did at CG and got dessert free and an apology, plus a phone call from guest services (the brussel sprouts weren't the only issue).

A BIG BIG THANK YOU TO ALL.

We have booked the following

Tusker house

50 prime time

California grill

Jiko

Plaza

Garden Grill

Skipper

Yak and yeti

Brown derby

Have a magical day

Some really good choices! I'm jealous. Jiko is my favorite of this list! I'm sad because we won't be doing it on our May trip but it's a shoe-in for our December one.

I liked Tony's. I've heard the spaghetti/spaghetti sauce dishes are not great, but the chicken Marsala I got when we went there was awesome. Not sure if its on the menu anymore.

Worst experience and food for me has been Chef Mickeys. We tried to give it another shot a few times, but finally called it quits after the last trip. The music is always so loud and chaotic. The characters are rushed and completely impersonal with the kids, and the food is....tolerable, but not great. Our last trip, they moved the restaurant to the BLT ballroom & it was awful :( Food was the worst its ever been, character interaction was awful. The server was nice-that was its own redeeming quality.
