“I’ve got a very bad feeling about this.” Jan 2015 - Rebel Challenge - Complete

December Week 3 Run Update

Monday, December 15th
Plan - Cross Training
Actual - 33 Minute Bike Ride

Tuesday, December 16th
Plan - 30 to 45 Minute Run
Actual - Nothing

I had my treatment with the A.R.T Specialist today. I asked him about running tonight and he said not today. I was told to try 2 miles on Wednesday and then see how I feel. This worked out well not having to run as I had plans with my husband have dinner and to see The Hobbit with some of his coworkers.

Wednesday, December 17th
Plan - Originally nothing
Actual - 1.91 Miles

I set the treadmill for 30 minutes & this is how far I got in that time. I didn’t feel too bad afterwards.

Thursday, December 18th
Plan - 30 to 45 Minute Run
Actual - Nothing

Again, I didn’t have time to do anything. I had a bachlorette party to go to for the wedding I was attending this weekend.

Awaiting Bride’s Arrival

Friday, December 19th
Plan - Nothing
Actual - Nothing

I left work at 2:00PM to head up to Walt Disney World for a friend’s wedding. Another friend and I stayed at CBR in the Pirate Rooms. We headed to EPCOT to walk around and get dinner at Tutto Italia.

Sunday, December 21st
Plan - 12.5 Mile Run
Actual - Nothing

I did have full intention of doing at least some of a long run this morning as my roommate had to get up at 3:30AM anyway to get ready for the wedding as she was a bridesmaid. I’m not sure if I came down with a stomach bug from Disney or if it was a combination of the food and alcohol (I only had 3 manhattans though) but at 12:30AM I woke up sick to my stomach. When my friend woke up to get ready, I hadn’t slept and there wasn’t anyway I was going to do a long run and be able to get through the wedding/reception and driving home. I ended up not getting home until close to 7PM and I was asleep by 8:30PM. My stomach never did feel right all day.

Two Pictures from the Wedding as I’m not sure if the bride wants personal pictures out there yet.

Obviously, this week was not good training wise.

Documents Arrival

This afternoon I got my documents and tickets for our vacation package! Only 3 more weeks to go!

OK I'm way late and the "run speak" is like Greek to me, but I'm interested in hearing about your trip and if you two want to meet up at all and get together you can PM me. It would be fun to actually meet instead of just a "drive by" like we've had in the past. If there's no time that's cool too, I understand.

When you go to the Steakhouse are you doing the "Chef's Table" or just the regular menu? I highly recommend the Chef's Table and they do it Thursday through Saturdays. You could call them and change it if you like. Marcel will take great care of you I'm sure!

Thanks for joining in! Sorry for all the run speak ;) I'm excited for this being our first real trip to Disneyland! I'll have to look at our schedule between park and race stuff as I don't know how much free time we have but I plan to do that this week & I'll let you know if I see some free time.

We are just doing the regular menu at the Steakhouse. As its the night after the 10K & the night prior to the Half-Marathon, we want to keep to the basics without overdoing it for our stomachs. I figured having steak plus a baked potato would be good fuel for us for the next day. I'm sure the Chef's Table is amazing though! Our next trip to Disneyland I'll be all over the Tables at both Steakhouse 55 and Napa Rose as it won't be for a race.

December Week 4 Run Update

I started looking at 4 Week Half Marathon Training plans online. I know this isn’t ideal but with how badly I’ve been training, I don’t really have many other options. I found a plan that Woman’s Health Magazine listed that should be doable as I don’t have to work until January 2nd after Monday December 22nd. That should keep me on decent track as I won’t have the outside stresses that will affect me.

Monday, December 22nd
Plan - Off Day or 45 to 60 Minutes Cross Training
Actual - 47 Minutes on Bike

86KXsxM.png

I got out of work at 4PM & it was wonderful to know I don’t have to be back until after 10 days off! I do have to be on call and available by email on Tuesday and Friday this week and Monday and Tuesday next week but that's reasonable enough and I can do that all remotely! As I had enough off days last week, I wasn’t going to rest. I still felt sick though especially after eating almost anything. I hope it clears up but the cough isn’t sounding good either.

Tuesday, December 23rd
Plan - 3 to 4 miles Easy Running
Actual - 3.1 miles

LwQ1cGW.png

I set the treadmill at the gym to the 5K setting and just did as well as I could. This is the fastest I’ve been in a while so thats a positive.

The unpositive was later this evening when I spiked to a 100 degree fever. This then caused me to call my mother and tell her we weren’t coming up to her house for Christmas as with her husband having surgery next week, there was too much of a risk to get him sick.

Wednesday, December 24th
Plan - 5 to 6 miles Easy Running
Actual - 1.09 miles walking

SlZn1IY.png

I was 100% sick, fever, aches and all. I even slept for 10.5 hours, which is 3.5 hours longer than usual for me! I really shouldn’t have gone to the gym in the afternoon with my husband but for some reason he convinced me to go. I had no desire to be there and just wanted to stay home and probably should have. I just walked on the treadmill as he ran while giving him dirty looks. Eventually, he got the point and stopped so we could go home.

Thursday, December 25th
Plan - Off Day or 3 to 4 Miles Easy Running
Actual - 1.4 Miles Walking w/ a little Running

Still super sick feeling. My husband & I woke up this morning and I still felt like crap. He dragged me outside to at least go to the end of the street and back to our house. I had 0 energy to do this. He kept running ahead then back to me while I mostly just walked although I did jog between some driveways. Once home, I took a nap!

Friday, December 26th
Plan - 45 to 60 MInutes Cross Training
Actual - 45 Minutes on the bike

XJ2HW1N.png

I still didn’t feel 100% but I wasn’t like how I was the last two days. I had some energy at least and could get through the day without having to live off of medicine. At least that means I’m recovering now!

Saturday, December 27th
Plan - 3 to 4 Miles Easy Running
Actual - 3.1 Miles Easy Walking

Vwb0PxJ.png

I woke up with morning with killer thigh pain. I attempted to stretch it out but it wasn’t really working well. I knew I needed to get the miles in some way so at least I could walk on the treadmill for a 5K setting.

Sunday, December 28th
Plan - 8 Miles
Actual - 7.97 Miles (close enough)

J5JvycB.png

I had a massage set for 9AM this morning. As I still had the pain in my outer thighs, I told my massage therapist this and she spent about half of the hour session working on my hips/gluts/it band as they were super tight. She recommended me to start foam rolling when we spoke about my new 4 week plan for these races so they won’t get as tight as they now were. I also have another massage set for 2 weeks from now aka the weekend before the race along with another one set for the weekend after the race. I think between this and the A.R.T treatments for my ankle at work prior to the race, my body should hopefully be in better condition.

Around 1:30PM, my husband got home as he wanted us to go the gym together for the run as he dreads going to the gym after work. He finished his 8 miles in about an hour and 20 minutes so he had the lovely opportunity to wait another 40 minutes for me to finish. It went well enough. The first half was faster than the 2nd half of the run but as I was going I was starting to notice a twinge in my ankle so I didn’t want to push it and risk more injury. I also was in a bad place mentally for this run after the first 5 minutes when one of the managers at my work decided to text message me a huge issue they wanted to be dealt with right now. I responded I would deal with it later as I just started my 8 mile run but I got a response that “failure isn’t an option.” It got me out of the I’m going to do this and instead I spent most of these two hours formulating thoughts in my head that will never be spoken as I generally usually love my job even if it oversteps the work/life balance on occasion. But I got the run done and then went home to deal with what I could considering most of my industry is on break at this time (technically, I’m also on holiday break until January 2nd)

Hi Dis! Following! And a couple questions...have you heard of Jeff Galloway? Sounds like you are using his plan, so do you use intervals? This might work well for you. Something like :30run/:45walk.

Second, I see you booked with the WDTC, have you heard of GET TRAVEL? They are one of the agents authorized for all Run Disney events.
They get All Disney hotel rooms at discounted rates ANd tickets are $65 cheaper. GetTravel.com

I'm so excited for you in this endeavor and you can do it! Don't worry about the sweep, just go as fast as you can and trust me, there will be others behind you. Have a great time with it!

Welcome! I have heard of Jeff Galloway - I was using his plan until I had my set back with my ankle and had to rest while it healed plus I wasn't really putting too much effort into it. I do intervals in a weird way when running outside by going off either number of driveways I'm passing or some type of landmark and switching up that way. At the gym I base it off of people coming in; otherwise I feel like I'm watching the timer too much.

I have heard of GET TRAVEL. I actually used them for rooms and race registration for the Glass Slipper Challenge at the Princess in 7 weeks. They ended up costing me more for my room at the Pop Century than I could have gotten it outside of them but as we waited until August to register, we didn't have much of a choice. Since it didn't save me money for PHM, I didn't bother to call and quote for Disneyland. I guess I should have had least seen.

I'm excited and nervous as well. I'm hoping this ends up going better than Tower of Terror did but at least this is a morning run that fits into my schedule more normally than a race that starts at my bedtime!

December Week 5 Run Update

Monday, December 29th
Plan - Off Day or 45 to 60 Minutes Cross Training
Actual - 45 Minutes Cross Training

W2DRb95.png

Did the bike for 45 minutes.

Tuesday, December 30th
Plan - 3 to 4 Miles Easy Running
Actual - 3.1 Miles

REt0RyW.png

I focused more on fast walking than running during this run. I was able to maintain the pace for longer rather than doing run/walk intervals as it was shown. I also had no pain afterwards.

Wednesday, December 31st
Plan - 6 to 7 Miles Easy Running
Actual - 6.1 Miles

AN87APc.png

Thursday, January 1st
Plan - Off Day or 3 to 4 Miles Easy Running
Actual - Off Day

It was the last day of my break and I wanted to enjoy doing absolutely nothing as I won’t have a day like that for a while. I read 2 books! I also decided to do Project 365 this year after having not done it the last 3 years but I’ll be doing it on instagram this year instead of a blog.

Friday, January 2nd
Plan - 45 to 60 Minutes Cross Training
Actual - 47 Minutes on the Bike

VTrI5ES.png

Today was my first ‘official’ day back at work since December 22nd. Apparently, most of everyone else didn’t think it was so there was practically no one there (usually when I get into work I’m about the 15th person in the plant - today I was 2nd even with being there right on time rather than early (6AM)) There were about 20 people total and that number kept dwindling as the day went on. I cut out early as well so I could get to the gym before all the resolutioners showed up after a normal working day. It was nice & empty!

Saturday, January 3rd
Plan - 3 to 4 Miles Easy Running
Actual - 3.11 Miles

uTROk8U.png

I really like that 5K setting on the gym’s treadmill. It makes it easier to go the 3 to 4 miles without having to estimate how well I’m going to perform today when picking a time. I took it easy and held back some as I knew I had my last long run the next day.

Sunday, January 4th
Plan - 12 to 14 Miles depending on which training plan I wanted to follow.
Actual - 12.86 Miles

sYMBfgj.png

Here was my Project 365 for the day:
nmPb44J.png

As I wrote about for yesterday, I like the 5K setting on the gym’s treadmill. I used it for this long run so it was easy to see how the run was going overall along with knowing exactly how much I had left. It broke the run into 4 distinct parts and see how my energy went from 5K to 5K. After each 5K, there is a 2 minute cooldown where I walked at either a 3.5MPH or 3.0MPH pace before refilling my water bottle and going for the next one. I also had a gu after each of the first 3 5K segments and 1 sport bean every 10 minutes during each 5K set. This seemed to keep me energized to pull through. The first 3 5K segments weren’t too bad. The last one was. I was mentally and physically drained and I’m sure my face was like I want to kill all of you. At the end, my shoes felt tight and I wished I had brought my Underarmour Flip Flops to wear during my official cool down of grocery shopping.

The other good part of having it be 4 distinct parts was I could see how fast each 5K went (including the additional 2 minute cool down)

1st 5K: 50:36 minutes for 3.22 miles (15:43 min/mil)
2nd 5K: 48:30 minutes for 3.22 miles (15:04 min/mil)
3rd 5K: 46:58 minutes for 3.21 miles (14:38 min/mil)
4th 5K: 48:56 minutes for 3.21 miles (15:15 min/mil)

I think I may actually be able to pull this Rebel Challenge off.

Sorry you got sick over Christmas. I've been sick as well, but I'm still not all the way better.

Sounds like your training is going well. Hopefully the run will go well for you!

Hope you are feeling better! I think I ended up scaring the rest of the virus out of me when I did that 12.86 mile run which is good at least. I know I didn't want to be near me after that either. :rotfl2:

Thanks! I hope the runs go well too!

Okay so let's talk a little about your Half Marathon day. You are assuming you'll start at 5:30, but you won't, you'll start according to your corral, and I'm not sure what you out for your finish time on your registration, but you probably won't start until about 6-615, since the earlier corrals are for 2:30 and less. So if you start at 6:00, and you are still a little slow, allow the full 3:30 to make sure you have a cushion.
So keep that in mind, also, keep in mind that it's a madhouse after and to allow time to get back over to your hotel. If the race finishes in the DLH parking lot, it'll take about 30 mins to get back to PPH with all the runners, spectator, etc.
HAVE FUN!! And good luck!!!

Wow! You guys are doing two races, that's cray cray! I hope you do good on both! I'm rooting for you!

I'm aware of those things which is why I gave some buffers in time. I figured it would be madhouse afterwards as it felt like that at Tower of Terror as well. The finish seems like its right after the Disneyland Hotel. Worst case, my husband and I both feel like utter crap after the race & I eat $20 for an ADR no show for my noon ADR.

My husband most likely will be finishing 1.5 hours before me so we already talked about him heading back to the room without me so he can get cleaned up, foam rolled, and relaxed by the time I get done. This also means that I can get him to set up my epsom bath while I'm walking back to the hotel.

Thanks! I'm nervous about this but as I can do is try now!

Wow! You guys are doing two races, that's cray cray! I hope you do good on both! I'm rooting for you!

Its totally cray cray. The craziest part is 5 weeks after this race, I'm doing it all over again at the Princess Half Marathon. Thanks for rooting for me! Its going to be enough of an accomplishment to just finish. 4 years ago I wouldn't have been able to even finish a 5K so its progress!

January Week 1 Run Update

Monday, January 5th
Plan - Off Day or 45 to 60 Minutes Cross Training
Actual - 37 Minutes on Bike

lnQv8rb.png

My husband worked an opening shift today rather than his usual mid or closing shift, so he told me to wait for him to go to the gym instead of going straight after work. When we got to the gym, he apparently had zero desire to be there. This caused me to cut my cross training short and get zero strength training done. Ugh!

Tuesday, January 6th
Plan - 3 to 4 Miles Easy Running
Actual - Nothing

I went to A.R.T. today for the first time in 3 weeks. It was painful for my poor ankle! A good pain though but I had no desire to work out after it.

Wednesday, January 7th
Plan - 6 to 7 Miles Easy Running
Actual - 3.0 Miles Easy Walking

This afternoon my new Brooks Adrenaline GTS 14s came in from Zappos. I know they are the ‘retired’ now but Zappos still had the 14s for sale for $89. I figured I needed a 2nd pair of running shoes between the Rebel Challenge and the Glass Slipper Challenge in February. My current running pair only has 121 miles on it but I should get about 12 miles on this new pair before leaving for Disneyland.

KzVhRUY.png

New Shoes!

So with the new shoes, I headed to the gym to get them broken in. I did this more as a walk as I noticed them really gripping on the treadmill belt and I didn’t want to hurt myself.

twMyv6X.png

Thursday, January 8th
Plan - Off Day or 3 to 4 Miles Easy Running
Actual - 2 Miles Easy Running

cWdNxA1.png

When I got to the gym, 20 of the 30 treadmills were ‘reserved’ for a bootcamp class that only had 6 people attending. I had to go on a different brand of treadmill as that was the only ones opened. I really don’t like them as it isn’t easy to switch up the speeds as you are going. This killed my motivation to be there so I did what I could and got out of there when the crowds got too bad.

Friday, January 9th
Plan - 45 to 60 Minutes Cross Training
Actual - 47 Minutes on Bike

wCqNDhy.png

Today was my day off site for work so my husband and I headed there early in the morning before he had to head to work. Going at 8AM in the morning meant there were no crowds which was great! I was able to get my bike and strength training done before I had to get on a customer call.

This afternoon I went shopping for the last of the stuff needed for Disneyland. I got some new clothes and a foam roller for after the 10K and Half that was recommended for me by both my massage therapist and my A.R.T. specialist. I got a water bottle for our belts for the half marathon to which my husband responded “that looks so small” but I said it was just for when you really need it between water stops like when I need a sip after beans or Gus.

Saturday, January 10th
Plan - 3 to 4 Miles Easy Running
Actual - 3.1 Miles

GGPq09j.png

My best run yet! I didn’t feel bad at all afterwards either.

Sunday, January 11th
Plan - 45 Minutes Cross Training
Actual - 50 Minute Work Out Video

I wanted to get to the gym but I scheduled my massage for 9AM which means I wouldn’t be able to get a workout done before the massage. My husband left for work at 4:45AM and the dogs woke me up so I decided to be productive and get some sort of work out in. This proved to be difficult with the dogs as one of them thought that when I got on the floor to do the ab work, it was dog pile time instead. I think I may be bruised on my stomach and arms now.

Hi! I've been following your PTR & I thought of you yesterday. My family & I went to California Adventure yesterday so that DD & DS could experience the new Frozen Fun activities. It wasn't supposed to rain until today, but it rained on/off ALL DAY yesterday!!! We didn't do much & left earlier than usual because of it. I know some people like it when it rains in the parks because it means fewer crowds, but it just didn't work for us.

Anyway, as a result of the rain, we did a lot of window shopping & shopping. I thought of you when I saw the Run Disney Dooney & Bourke bags. I initially wanted us to return next weekend to make up for the rain, but decided not to because of next weekend's events!

HAVE AN AWESOME TIME!!! Enjoy yourself (your itinerary looks pretty packed). I think I'm most excited for your ADR's (I love Disney food!). :yay::cheer2:

Hi!

Just read your trip report and wanted to say HI and good luck. Your trip almost mirrors mine, my 26 yo son and I are flying out of KS on the afternoon of the 14th, staying the first night at PPH and then moving to DLH.

We are also really slow run/walkers and COMPLETELY undertrained this time-UGH! But we are determined to finish both races and you can too! The first thing in our favor is the weather, its supposed to be 45 at night and cooler equals better. A friend and I ran the DL Half in 2014 and I gotta tell you that it seems like they are pretty lenient with sweeping the course, especially with the 10k.

My advice to you is to stay upbeat :) I know its really hard especially with your husband finishing so far ahead of you. When I do the races with my friends we all run/walk separately and it seems like its the mental part that gets me down. But just keep with it and don't get bummed on the half. Just think of the medals. My friend and I have a saying "Same medal as the Kenyans" LOL

Maybe we will run into you-I'll be the (I think very young looking 50yo) woman in the baseball hat with the son that has a full beard, trying to explain to photographers that we do NOT want the "couple pictures" :rotfl2:

I'm with you on not liking the parks in the rain! You don't have as many places to avoid the rain either at Disneyland as we do at WDW do you? At WDW, we usually we just hang out at a bar until the rain goes away.

I'm glad to see the Frozen Fun has made its way to Disneyland. We did some at Hollywood Studios this summer & fall. Hopefully you enjoyed what you did get to experience!

I love window shopping! I know spending so much on a Star Wars themed purse is crazy but I can't wait! Its probably going to be really crowded this weekend but it should be fun either way.

Thank you! It does seem really packed but its such a short trip that I want to get our money's worth. I'm excited for the ADRs as well as all of these are new places to us.

Welcome! Hope you have a smooth flight! Looking back, I should have just spend the extra to stay at DLH or GCH but too late now.

Its good to know that they seem lenient on the course. Cooler is good as well. At the Turkey Trot I did in November it was in the 50s which was great! You'll do great as well!

The mental part gets me down. On long runs, from 30 to 60 minutes, I'm the most mean person I know in my thought process as I end up mentally beating up myself, my life, work or whatever is going on that may slightly even bother me a bit that wouldn't bother me at any other time. I was explaining this to a coworker and my boss today and their response was well we don't make it past 60 minutes ever. :lmao: Some of my mother coworkers think its crazy to spend this much money to run.

I love that saying! Its finishing that counts!

If you see us, say hello! I'm going to be wearing the exact same outfit for the half as what I wore for Tower of Terror.

Actual - 3 Miles

Most likely my last training run before the races. It went fine.

Tuesday, January 13th
Plan - 45 Minutes Cross Training
Actual - 47 Minutes on Bike

I was cleared on my ankle today at A.R.T. as he said its feeling normal again. We’ll have a follow up next Tuesday to make sure I didn’t rehurt myself this upcoming weekend!

I got everything packed up once I got home from work and then headed to the gym to get some cross training done. I skipped strength training though as it was too crowded.

Wednesday, January 14th
Plan - Nothing

I won’t have time between 10 meetings at work and heading to CALIFORNIA! I know I’ll have to work through lunch as I’ll be out the next 3 working days so that isn’t an option for working out then either.

Thursday, January 15th
Plan - Off Day or 3 to 4 Miles Easy Running

This is truly up in the air if we are going to do this or not. Depends on how tired we are after the EXPO and Disneyland with the time change.

Friday, January 16th
Plan - 45 to 60 Minutes Cross Training

This should happen.

Saturday, January 17th
Plan - Star Wars 10K

Sunday, January 18th
Plan - Star Wars Half Marathon

A Very Long Day

My husband was lucky enough to have Wednesday off of work. I wasn’t that lucky as I only had enough vacation hours to cover having Thursday, Friday & Monday off. This meant waking up at 5AM and putting in a very busy day at work. I left at 3:00PM and got home shortly where we got the bag in the car and headed to the Fort Myers airport. I’m glad we left a bit early as I-75 has really bad traffic now that its season. We parked the car, checked our one bag, and headed through security.

We still had about 90 minutes until our flight was to take off so it was a shock to see the plane was already at the gate! That seems so unusual for how flights go nowadays as they try to turn around so quickly.

I got us a crappy dinner at Sbarro as it was either that or the Great Bagel Company. Our cheese pizza slice and breadstick each was just enough to keep the hunger at bay as we weren’t sure we would have time to eat anything during our 50 minute layover in Houston.

Our flight took off 15 minutes early and we arrived in Houston early enough that we didn’t have anyone on the ground ready for us so we got to sit around on the plan until it was time for us to actually arrive. We walked (well jogged almost) to our Orange County flight with just enough time to buy a drink and candy at the newsstand.

The flight from Houston to Orange County was fine. We both attempted to try to sleep as much as possible. I was seated next to a very chatty person that I learned too much about during those three hours but at least it was entertaining when I wasn’t asleep. We got to Orange County early and it was no time until we got our bag and were in a Taxi on our way to Paradise Pier.

Apparently the taxi wanted us to watch tv while he drove.

We arrived at Paradise Pier at 10:45PM local time, much earlier than I thought we would. Check In was a breeze, even if the lady kept confusing herself when it came to extra magic hour parks as apparently they were changing because of the races. Our room was towards the top of the towers near the elevators which gave us a great view of Anaheim.

My husband was passed out by the time I finished getting unpacked and settled, so I set the alarm for 6:45AM as Thursday would be a long day between Breakfast, the Expo, Packet Pickup, Disneyland & California Adventure. Being mostly awake for 22 hours had hit me as well by this point!
