(2014-2020) Disney's GRAND FLORIDIAN RESORT & SPA + VILLAS Information & Questions

Since I'm 30 days away from my first RPC stay, I'm going to ignore the last few pages with the negative comments. ;-).

I posted this on the CL thread too but quick question for you RPC pros. Are there any common room request(s) I should keep in mind for a standard view room? Eg, close to lounge? Certain floor? I've read through this thread but feel like a total amateur, I'm used to Poly and CR CL which are easy! Thanks in advance!
What day's will you be at the RPC? We arrive on Feb. 23 and leave on the 26 to go to the BWI CL. As far as location goes I remember that the theme park views that look over the marina are a bit of a hike to the lounge. The big plus to us is the "secret" elevator that brings you down to the courtyard pool. I loved not having to hike through the lounge to get to the elevators and then out to the pool. I'm pretty sure it is a service elevator, but we used it almost every day. Many of the other rooms face the Poly and look out over the beach pool. I didn't like those balconies as much though because they are solid so you can't really see over them when you are sitting down. The great thing about the RPC is that it is not that large so none of the rooms are very far away from anything. It has been many years since we stayed at the GF so I am really looking forward to returning, and like you I am trying to ignore they negatives until we can judge for ourselves.

Thanks for the feedback! We'll be there 2/24-2/29. I find myself getting more confused with the rooms the more I read, turret rooms, etc, but I'm just going to go with the flow.

We also have a first RPC stay coming up in March and I've also been confused about the rooms, lol. Must be cause we're trying something new! Now the information posted above about the balconies that are solid -- that I didn't know, or I'm sure I just missed in this thread. That's an important tidbit for us because balcony time is important, especially to DH who sits out there early in the mornings with his laptop doing some work, so a nice view is always a plus (and a closed view would be a minus :)). I need to do some more reading of this awesome thread!

Well I'm sure we will see you in the lounge! Over the years we have stayed at the RPC four times, but it has been a few years since we've been there. The solid balconies were on the fifth floor, the one time we got pixie dust and found ourselves upgraded to a three bedroom suite. I think the solid balconies are only on the fifth floor, but I'm sure someone else will come in and tell us. Another neat thing that I remember was that almost every morning when we were in a theme park view room they would bring the glass coach and team of six white ponies along the walk way under our balcony for one of the many weddings that go on at the hotel. I don't know if they still do that but we loved seeing them and I even have them on video.

Make sure you take a little time to just sit in the lounge at night and just take it all in!

Personally, I never worry about what balcony or view I get from my room in RPC because the views from the lounge are awesome (even looking into the main lobby/atrium), and if you want a nice balcony, you can just go to the third floor balcony off the lounge that looks out toward the courtyard but also at the lagoon toward the Poly. There's rarely anyone out there!image.jpg
My main request would be "close to lounge!"

Absolutely beautiful - thank you!

Thank you Dispro1, much appreciated! The only request I ended up sending was in fact "close to lounge."

Disneytam, thank you again for your insights. We tend to be around the hotel and lounge quite a bit (we're not park commandos), so definitely could cross paths. It'll just be me and my son, so if you see a struggling solo dad with a super-excited (hopefully we'll-behaved) 5-year old, might be me. Hoping the weather blesses us with some warm days suitable for pool time. :sunny:

I will keep my eye out for you and your son! Our first trip to the RPC was when my son was only four and we spent a whole lot of time at the pool. This trip will be my husband and I, he's 6"1 and 63 but looks 50 and I'm almost 50 but we are both big kids when we get to Disney. I hope you have a great trip and would also love some sun and warm weather.

Read page one again. There is lots of info there and it does help.

I agree with other poster. The 2nd "secret" elevator is a life saver! My dh thought I wascrazy when I dragged him away from the lounge down a long curvy hall. Then we took the elevator right to the outside of gaspies and he said "nice!!".

Sorry if this is well known or already discussed, I booked at the 60 day mark and didn't study up on any refurbishments as well as I should have. I read this AM a blurb from Orlando Theme Park News saying:

"Beach Pool slide will be re-coated and closed Feb. 8–28. The Beach Pool will remain open and only the slide will be closed to Guests."
http://www.orlandoparksnews.com/2016/01/grand-floridian-resort-upcoming.html

If this is accurate, I'm a little bummed, although we're not ones to let downtime or closures really bother us on vacation. I get that winter months are times for refurbishment for stuff like this - and we may not even have weather conducive to pool time anyway - but my DS loves Disney pool slides to the point of obsession and I don't relish trying to explain that it's closed! But alas, life will go on...

I'm very sorry to hear that your son will not be able to enjoy the slide:( I would be disappointed also; however, I will say that I think it needs to be re-surfaced because when we were there in October, there were a few spots (seams) that hurt my back! I think I only went down the slide twice that trip because it took the fun out of it for me. FYI, when we were at BWI last month, the slide was being repaired, so they allowed BWI guests to use SAB (Stormalong Bay) at BC resort! Maybe they will allow GF guests to use the Poly pool? I would definitely ask!

Thanks. Ultimately if we have warm enough weather to even be in the pool in late Feb I'm content, slide or not. I know what you mean by the seams, the first seam on the Poly slide always gives me a little pinch, so much so that I make a point to lift up a bit.

Missing Grand Floridian, here are 2 photos from our room. We were in room 6315 in The Sugarloaf Building. Loved every minute. One photo is looking to the towards the marina with the Monorail in the distance and the other is looking left towards Gasparilla Grill.Rm6315GFFt.jpgroom6315GFA.jpg

We had a similar view in August:flower1:

Wish I was there now.

Hi Mexi, we arrive at the GF on the 3rd also, staying through the 6th and then over to the AOA for a family suite for 5 days. Enjoy your trip!

Tom

Tom We will miss you by a few days...looking forward to hearing your thoughts on your split stay...I know Trish had lots of good things to say about her nice and roomy AoA room...

OK I finally sent my email to GF IPO with all of my information and also a few room requests. We have a standard room in the main building booked. I asked if all rooms had a daybed (CM said yes) and if all rooms had a full balcony (CM said she'd note that as a request because not all rooms have one). Also, the CM said even though I did online check-in, I wouldn't receive a text about my room until I've physically gone to GF and checked in. Is that correct? Hoping I don't have to also call IPO when I really don't have any major requests! But that sure doesn't sound accurate to me...

Put your worries aside TJA all of the standard rooms in RPC have a balcony...and only ONE has an enclosed balcony..and that's on the 5th floor and not likely to be assigned to you unless you requests it....The standard RPC rooms have two views...one of the beach pool/VGF/Poly..and the other is of the courtyard pool/CY area....both are lovely....most of the rooms with the cy pool view are closer to the lounge...which is on the 4th floor..but even rooms on the 3rd floor are not very far as there is an internal staircase that makes for easy access between the two floors...the rooms with a view of the beach pool are of a slightly bigger configuration...and have a wet bar with storage underneath in the room...not much difference in space honestly....if being close to the lounge is the most important thing than that's exactly what you should have on your reservation..noted through central reservations and also through IPO...WE have never on OLCI so I cannot answer about that...I do know that one of the amenities of staying CL is that you are greeted upon your arrival via ME or private transportation (or supposed to be!!??? lol) and escorted to the CL lounge or room for a more personalized check in experience...In our experience the rooms assignors at the GF do a great job of trying to accommodate requests....:goodvibes

And a ticker change,
Yep, so of course typing that I won't change is MY ultimate jinx....
And I changed to Poly CL :rolleyes1 If it were only me I doubt I would change, because I just love love love the Grand. However, DH  not so much, actually not at all. He was going along with all of us, but that ended. Everyone is pleased here at la casa de Pas. Except me and my little man, but we will enjoy our trip. There's a pool, wine, and a castle view so it's all good, right?

Hmmmm...have you changed resorts?????????????????? :confused3 :upsidedow:p  ..oh I had a feeling....lol...Wherever you end up....lol..I know its going to be a wonderful vacation! Its Diney after all! :goodvibes

Pas. you are still 181 days out, that leaves at least 366 possible resort switches!

Tom

You are in for a treat :wizard: ...RPC really does offer a very special resort experience....I posted quite a bit about standard view rooms in my post above to TJA 4th floor rooms are on the same floor as the lounge...and if that's most important then I would simply recommend making that your request....

Hi! I've stayed at the GF a dozen times, but still need help. We have an Outer Bldg, Standard Room, Club Level-Access booked. Does that guarantee we will be in Sugar Loaf ("SL")? We love SL and I want to make sure that we will not be in some other building but permitted to use SL. I thought that the reservation, itself, should say SL, but maybe I'm mistaken. Thanks!

That seems to be the new terminology for SL...lol...wouldn't it just be simpler to have that room category say Sugar Loaf....:confused3

I would think they would step it up even more for Easter week, but I've never been there during that week. All I can tell you is that we could've paid a LOT less to stay at Poly for our trip the week of Memorial Day, but ultimately we chose RPC because the food is so much better (at least it always has been in the past); and we chose RPC over SL because of the views from the lounge and ambiance of the main building:) Our kids are old enough to justify the extra expense (sometimes) because we can actually spend a good amount of time relaxing in the lounge....at 17 and 12, my kids can go to the parks alone if they want! I have to admit that I am upset by the empty dessert table pic that Baler posted, but I'm certainly not changing my plans...as long as they keep the champagne flowing -LOL! The food that lucybalue listed sounds more like what I'm used to seeing, only she didn't mention the spinach-artichoke dip that I love mid day and the boiled eggs that they had recently added for breakfast! I hope those are still there! Blueskies will be there in a couple of weeks and can update us:) Let's hope she has good news!

Editing to add that this is still just my opinion of GF RPC...everyone likes different things, but I hope you love it as much as I do!

I second that :thumbsup2:thumbsup2 I promise to be on a food fact finding mission...lol...for all of my fellow GF fans....cause thats what its always about!!! :goodvibes

I see a DIS meet in your future!! :crowded: ..lol..some of the nicest moments of our trips have been meeting up with friends that we have made right here...:goodvibes

That back elevator has always been meant for guest use...no worries...its def not a service elevator... and used to be referred to as the pool elevator...because in the early years ( aka the Grand Floridan Beach Resort :boat:) there was only one pool..and that was the courtyard pool..so that other elevator tucked away in RPC was an easy way to reach the pool with out traipsing through the lobby in pool attire.... and as Trish pointed out is nice and close to Gaspys too...

And you're so very right everything is in pretty close proximity in RPC on on the GF grounds too....its definitely one of the things that makes the resort so appealing to us....:goodvibes

How exciting! My brain is already spinning, planning the next possible trip! Wish it could coincide with one of yours!

We are doing a split stay this time around ....and of course ending at the GF....lol...Keep those trip planning wheels turning...nothing better for post Disney blues than planning another one! And yes...one of these days we really need to have our trips coincide!!! :grouphug:

All of the new resort specific merchandise sure does look GRAND!!! I am planning on a "bit" of shopping myself....;) and BTW has anyone seem the new valentine MB....soooo very cute....:lovestruc I heard that they turn the tap styles pink! Think that I might need one of those....:)
