A really good disney documentary...anyone, anyone?

I own the Waking Sleeping Beauty on DVD and watch is a couple times a year. It is an absolute favorite of mine. Especially since I was growing up during those films.

This Doc produced by Disney back in 1989 covers the entire start-up of Disney's MGM Studios.... and its really good!

I've added this one to my playlist. MGM used to be my favorite park when it first opened and had the Animation Department still. I could take that tour over and over again and watch the artists work.

I love Waking Sleeping Beauty, but my favorite Disney documentary is "Walt, the Man Behind the Myth." Not so much about the building of the parks, but a really good look into Walt's life. I don't know if it's on Netflix, but sometimes they run it on CNBC. I got the DVD on Amazon, but the price right now is high, it goes up and down from $15 to $60 for some reason. I think you can order it from the Family Museum website though.

Almost forgot! Another great one is Frank and Ollie! They set up is a little hokey and it's mostly them talking, but they tell great stories and it's so much fun watching them. A great tribute to two of the Nine Old Men.

I agree that "Waking Sleeping Beauty" is good. Haven't seen the Sherman Bros. movie or "Walt & El Grupo" but they are on my list.

Also, I just saw on the channel Destination America that it appears they have revamped a few of the Disney documentaries about the parks. There is one called "Disneyland Resort: Behind the Scenes" that talks about Carsland, so it must be relatively new (I just saw part of it so I'm not sure if it's an all new show or just an older show with new scenes added about Carsland). It also looks like there's a show called "Disney Cruise Line: Behind the Scenes" - under the show description is says it was created in 2013.

Got this for $18, free shipping from the Family Museum recently. Really like it!

HOLY....

Imagine my surprise when towards the end of the video you see a YOUNG Joe Rohde talking about the design of the Maelstrom ride vehicles.

I can't help but wonder if the reason for the profile shot of him explaining things was because of the angle of the drawing desk he was working on... or if it was to hide his left ear with the mid-80's version of his trademark "ear ornamentation."

Ditto with the others on The Boys, Walt and El Grupo, Waking Sleeping Beauty, The Pixar Story, and Frank & Ollie.

Recently I was searching around on Youtube and came across a few interesting shows. None that are quite the park-building you were looking for, but fun Disney stuff nonetheless.

This one is a doc/reunion show about the MMC I found when I was looking for things about Annette. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jP6v94hQnqg

This one is from the 25th anniversary of DL in 1980. It's a celebration show hosted by Danny Kaye. Hands down, the Michael Jackson section is the best! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0Md8BA2K_k

This is the grand opening of EPCOT, also with Danny Kaye. I don't know how well this holds up, but the look back at EPCOT and the attractions that are "supposed" to happen in the next year are pretty interesting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyKOA9k9qrw

The Disneyland Story c. 1990 isn't that great, but it is fun to hear what was supposed to happen in the next couple of years at DL that never came to pass. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBZe2kbkCGU

I'm sure there's tons more. Hope you have some good viewing ahead of you! :happytv:

Thank you for doing all that research and taking the time to share those video links. I'm going to try and watch those tommorow, they sound really interesting

It's been awesome to see all these videos you all have recommended and posted links to0. If you find anything else out there on the web or have and dvd recommendations please share with all of us. Well I'm going to get back to today's Dis Unplugged episode, have a great night

Lots of great recommendations. The Boys is really touching.

I just rented waking sleeping beauty today from amazon via my PS3 and it was great. I highly recommend it to Everyone!

This thread is amazing! I can't wait to watch all of these videos. Thank, you, PP, for doing all of this research and posting the links.

Thanks so much for posting these videos! I learned so much! I am going to grad school and I am doing my research on fire-fighting suit construction and materials. The part about the LMA stunt suits was so interesting as the components were very similar. It actually made me want to pay a lot more attention in class. Please keep them coming :)

I've got some more good Youtube finds. I promise I really do have a life:-)thumbsup2)! I just like to watch/listen to things while doing chores...and with a computer in the kitchen I've been finding some good stuff over the last week or so while making dinner, doing dishes, and cleaning up:

This is beyond awesome if you're a fan of Disney parks--especially Disneyland. This is a panel of parks voice artists from the D23 Expo in 2011. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7XbceE2LTY (This was so amazing that I stopped doing my chores and just sat in front of the computer mesmerized for an hour! :surfweb:)

I have no idea who this person is, but someone called redmorgankidd has a Youtube channel where he/she has posted a ton of Disney making of documentaries. (I think I liked the making of Pinocchio the best.) http://www.youtube.com/user/redmorgankidd

D23 has a lot of videos on Youtube. I've been really liking the Armchair Archivists series, but there's a lot more that I would like to check out. http://www.youtube.com/user/DisneyD23

This is a series of videos put out by Disney Parks called Every Role a Starring Role, where we're introduced to someone who does something at the Disney Parks. The variety of cast members and their occupations covered by this series is great. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vr1VHl7rAIo&list=PLC64EAECD41AFB365

Well that's it for now. I've been enjoying everyone's recommendations!

Thank you for posting those couple of video's. i just sat down to start watching the Every Role a Starring Role series. I too am really fascinated by the Armchair Archivest series, however it bothers me sometimes how the host's seem to be reading straight from a script, and don't convey their real personalities. I guess I am spoiled with the awesome Dis Unplugged team we have lol. Keep those great videos coming Dis crew!
